I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

No one on this thread is advocating wearing leggings without a skirted or long garment of some kind.
But to still say they are 'gross' and 'sweaty' WTF?!!

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 10:43

Waiting for a bus in my hideous leggings.

Seriously, arse covered. Why are they gross?

Leggings are Satan's own pyjamas, as far as I am concerned, but I will defend to the death any woman's right to wear them. As an aside, interesting that no men, outside middle-aged men in Lycra, wear them......

If you do wear them, arse coverage is all the public - your audience - asks of you.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 10:47

Hardly, given rigid gender expectations govern most aspects of our lives.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/05/2017 10:47

@user1489179512 - I have just started wearing leggings under either a dress or a long tunic (I am very overweight and was worried people would look at me and laugh, or poke fun) - and I can assure you that they aren't sweaty - I see them as slightly thicker, footless tights.

For me, they mean I can wear dresses that come to the knee or just above - there are lots of lovely dresses and tunics, but my shape means I can't wear dresses or skirts that are knee length or above - they just don't suit me. But put a pair of leggings underneath, and they look fine (and I feel confident enough to go out in public dressed in them).

TheDowagerCuntess · 05/05/2017 10:48

The reason women wear them is - so I hear - because they're comfortable.

Men don't see this as a good enough reason to gad about town in them.

DeleteOrDecay · 05/05/2017 10:50

Don't see what's wrong with leggings personally, I think they go nicely with a long top/dress or with shorts, not keen on wearing them as trousers though, if others choose to do so then they should ensure they are decent quality thick leggings, no one wants to see your underwear.

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 10:50

I'm not really seeing your point dowager.

DeleteOrDecay · 05/05/2017 10:51

And I've never felt sweaty wearing leggings. Jeans on the other hand....

HomityBabbityPie · 05/05/2017 10:52

The reason I wear them is certainly comfort. I don't find jeans or trousers comfy (unless tracksuit bottoms) and I like wearing long tops/dresses/skirts but detest the way tights feel against my skin.

PookieDo · 05/05/2017 10:58

Tights are horrible.
Leggings are a very valid alternative to wearing itchy nylon that easily tears

Rumtopf · 05/05/2017 11:22

OP you need to perfect your Paddington Bear Hard Stare. Those women were horrible but apart from their mean delivery did probably have a point about your top being too short or the leggings too thin.

I'm a size 18-20 and wear leggings frequently. Extra thick leggings that are not see through. Most often I wear them with a long vest dress that comes to mid thigh (to stop my back getting cold) and then a layering top/tunic/jumper dress/shirt dress over the top.

amusedbush · 05/05/2017 11:27

I'm a size 14/16 and wear thick leggings but only with dresses/long tunic tops.

Leggings with a normal tshirt is never a good look on anyone. I see loads of teenage girls wearing thin leggings with crop tops and it looks like horrible pyjamas.

Nobody wants to see someone else's camel toe underwear.

Boulshired · 05/05/2017 11:32

I do not like them as you can gain a dress size without even noticing and then the only thing that fits is the bloody leggings. But I do like the look of them.

Yanbu at all, leggings are really comfortable, when I was overweight, that was all that I could wear, jeans would cut my muffin top, and same with trousers. Just team it with a long tunic or top, and get the good quality ones, not the cheap paper thin ones.

Aeroflotgirl · 05/05/2017 11:44

I might need to add a long top, that covers. These women were rude and horrid.

CiderwithBuda · 05/05/2017 11:44

Yes you def need a long top with leggings.

I haven't worn them for ages but saw a woman the other day who looked fab - grey leggings and a long sleeved t-shirt the same color and a lovely blue and grey patterned dress on top. It looked really elegant I thought. But still very comfortable.

rollonthesummer · 05/05/2017 11:46

Leggings are fine, instead of tights. If you were them instead of trousers/jeans-they look awful whether you are 7 stone or 20.

If your top was riding halfway up your back, that was too short. When you put on leggings, ask yourself-'would I wear this tunic with tights?' If the answer is no, then don't.

olderthanyouthink · 05/05/2017 12:28

LEGGINGS ARE NOT TROUSERS

Not even for exercising if they are see though!

Aeroflotgirl · 05/05/2017 12:46

Roll Hmm, don't be so silly. Some of the good quality leggings are like trousers, especially the jeggings. Yes I do wear tunics with my leggings and my tights, the Joe Browns tunics are awsome and look fab with anything.

stumblymonkeyreturns · 05/05/2017 13:11

I'm overweight and wear leggings but always with tops that are tunic length.

I don't think anyone should wear leggings with tops that aren't tunic sort of length...I mean they are basically thick opaque footless tights.

ThymeLord · 05/05/2017 13:16

I'm overweight. I wear leggings allll the time and not always with tops that cover my arse. I don't care what anyone thinks to be honest.

It's also strange that there are 6 whole pages of people saying "it looks hideous", yet (perhaps it's just specific to the north west) I see girls and women of all sizes in leggings all the time.

rollonthesummer · 05/05/2017 13:45

I'm afraid I disagree!

ProseccoBitch · 05/05/2017 13:49

I commented on this thread the other day so had it mind, yesterday I saw a lady wearing black leggings with stone coloured shorts over the top, she looked great. If I could still fit into my shorts I'd copy her Grin
