I'm overweight and wear leggings

I can't be dead certain but I thought I heard two women sniggering about me in a shop when I was bending down.

They went silent when I got up and looked in their direction. They proceded laughing and whispering again when I turned to go down the next aisle.

It may well have had nothing to do with me but you know when you just get that feeling that you're being watched? I had that before I even clocked them.

I think it was because I'm fat and wearing leggings. I worry now that if i need to bend or stretch and in certain light people may catch a glimpse of my breakfast underwear. And every massive little ripple of cellulite is probably on show.

But they are just so damn comfy.

Am I being publicly undecent in my choice of attire or am I being over self conscious and paranoid?

Can I just check if children are excepted? Dd wears leggings with normal t shirts, she is 7

MuncheysMummy · 03/05/2017 18:25

They need to be worn with a long top/tunic and be decent quality not thin see through ones!

UppityHumpty · 03/05/2017 18:25

If you're overweight then make sure your bum is covered. If you have fat wobbly cellulite ridden legs like me then make sure they're thick too.

anastasia38494032010 · 03/05/2017 18:27

YABU.

OP, trust me, I'd never laugh at someone for their body shape. Ever.

HOWEVER: I am a size 6-8 and wear leggings at home, as loungewear. And proper gym ones at the gym/training. Leggings are NOT trousers. I hate when I see women wearing leggings when they could wear a pair of actual (flattering) trousers.

No matter what your body shape is, LEGGINGS ARE NOT FLATTERING ON ANYONE. Ew! I am pretty sure though you'd find a lot of nice trousers!

User99573864 · 03/05/2017 18:28

I wore leggings when pregnant and I discovered you CANNOT buy cheap ones and to always wear them with a long top, they're basically to make a short dress less indecent in my opinion!

Saying that I do have a pair of Jack Wills ones I wear round the house as my according to DH my arse looks great in them!

Blimey01 · 03/05/2017 18:34

You can wear what you bloody well like!
If those women were sniggering at you then they are complete knobs and don't deserve another thought. X

HighwayDragon1 · 03/05/2017 18:40

I also remember when leggings were first introduced and they were called footless tights...

problembottom · 03/05/2017 19:15

It's not about being overweight, see through leggings look bloody awful on everyone. Makes me wince when I see someone's knickers or growler through them, you can't help but do a horrified double take!

There are totally opaque leggings out there - my Nike £45 workout leggings for example - but you really need to make sure...

Koalablue · 04/05/2017 03:20

What's a growler? Will I regret asking?

KoalaDownUnder · 04/05/2017 03:32

Can I just check if children are excepted? Dd wears leggings with normal t shirts, she is 7

I vote 'yes'.

KoalaDownUnder · 04/05/2017 03:34

Leggings for adults must be:

  1. Not see-through; and
  1. Covered by shirt/tunic, right down over bum/fanjo to mid thigh.
gregoriesgirl · 04/05/2017 03:46

Ignore them. Slut shaming isn't ok and no other sort of shaming should be OK either.
I'm not exactly thin and I wouldn't wear leggings outside of the house but that's because I don't like them; if I did then it'd be wrong for anybody to shame me.

elkegel · 04/05/2017 04:04

I wear them in the gym or for running with a vest top, never with a top that covers my bum. I don't wear them otherwise though. I don't think I look "bloody awful" in them. I'm not skinny, but have a defined waist, muscly legs and rounded bottom. If other people have a problem with that, tough, don't look.

1forAll74 · 04/05/2017 04:28

Hello Lemon curdles, I am going to call you lemon cuddles,, and tell you not to take any notice of the morons in the shops whatever. idiots who you might think are looking at you anytime.are just non people as far as I am concerned.. leggings are lovely,, and very comfortable whatever your size..

Zoflorabore · 04/05/2017 04:33

A growler is a word used for the lady garden area Grin

Teabagtits · 04/05/2017 04:35

I'm fat and pregnant and wear leggings. I don't cover up my arse because it's a fantastic shape despite being large. Now my thighs however are an abomination. I'd never worn leggings before being pregnant and probably won't afterwards but for now I'm enjoying not giving a shit what anyone thinks...

I'm sorry you felt laughed at OP, it's such a horrible feeling but take pride in the fact that you have the courage to wear what you want and don't feel the need to judge like those women did.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 04/05/2017 04:51

It was very rude of them to laugh but I agree with everyone on here who says leggings are not trousers, you need to cover up to mid-thigh at least with them. I'm a size 10/12 and wouldn't wear leggings without a long tunic or short dress.

On a different note, I've just learned through this thread what a growler is. There's a jewellery stall at a craft market near me called the Hairy Growler, I always assumed that it was because the guy who makes the jewellery has a beard and a deep voice Blush

Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2017 04:51

If those women were sniggering about you then they have too much time on their hands.

Ignore.

Have you considered Palazzo trousers. I just spotted them. They look nice.

Or linen...

Wear what you like but if you are going to do that I think you need to ignore women in shops if they are rude.

(And I don't think they were sniggering about you, I think they may have been a bit vacuous!)

Thanks
Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2017 04:53

PS I am overweight and I really do not think leggins are at all flattering.

aurynne · 04/05/2017 06:09

OP, the two women were bitches to laugh at you. However, I have some advice for you: instead of looking at yourself in the mirror (we women NEVER see ourselves as we really are on the mirror) have your DH take a photo of you from behind, bending or standing while wearing leggings. THEN you will understand.

Leggings make the most normal-weigh woman look fat. Normal-sized legs look like overstuffed sausages when on leggings.

It is extremely rude to laugh, but a vision such as the one on this Google Images photo would make most people take a double look. I have read MNetters laughing openly at plumbers' ass-cracks on display. I see no difference. Some things look ridiculous and people will look and laugh more or less discreetly. Leggings on anyone who is not extremely thin do, in my opinion, look ridiculous and grotesque.

Of course, you are free to wear whatever you like. But we cannot really expect people not to stare. And if you're asking on MN, it is probably because you do care.

ArgyMargy · 04/05/2017 06:16

It was nothing to do with you being fat. Two out of three UK adults are fat. If we had to point and laugh at every fat person it would be a full time job. For all you know it could have been your hair, your shoes, that spot on your face. Anyway why do you care? (Although I left leggings behind in the 90s)

PossumInAPearTree · 04/05/2017 06:27

I'm a bit fat.

I wear treggings. Also make sure top is long enough to totally cover my arse and a bit more.

I'm happy with the way I look wearing such an outfit. No growler on display here.

SparklyFairyDust · 04/05/2017 06:37

Wear a top that is a bit more like a tunic when you wear leggings, then you won't show as much panty line / growler. Also jeggings are comfy, they're elasticated jeans.

If the leggings are cheap, when stretched they pretty much become translucent.

I always get tops that are a couple of sizes two big, so it hides lumps & bumps.

ImogenTubbs · 04/05/2017 06:41

Those women were horrible and are not justified in laughing at you whatever you look like or were wearing.

However leggings can be surprisingly see though, on people of any size.

MsHippo · 04/05/2017 06:44

I would say it's nothing to do with your size and all about see-through-leggings-syndrome. They weren't laughing at your body, just your poor choice of outfit! Get some thicker leggings (or don't wear them...) and don't worry a jot more.
