Fragrant Diane, she really is the kiss of death.
My toes are still curling

Also, as I said on another thread, it's a bit fucking rich to slag off centrists, sneer at the red tories and tell them constantly they're not welcome because Blair and Iraq, source of all evil blahdifuckingblah, then whinge on about people not supporting their party.

Either it is all of our party, in which case centrist views should be accommodated and compromise is necessary, or it isn't. Pick.

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 03/05/2017 09:54

Bring

Thanks.:)

Anyhow.

I personally don't keep up with UK politics, I already have to keep up with the politics for 2 other countries (the countries I have the right to vote in...).
Whilst UK politics do obviously influence us (my family and I)... Well, my opinion doesn't matter anyway. But DH (who is actually English) does keep up with it.

I listened to that interview and it was really embarassing/akward. If that was a junior politician I'd probably try to give them some slack (even if they had positions ) I strongly disagreed with... But she is a senior politician of the opposition.

I personally expect more of somebody like that.

Bringmesunshite · 03/05/2017 09:57

Seriously, you see no difference between "government policy" and "regime policy "?
Spot correctly pointed out the connotations of the word "regime ". Corbyn supporters would have us believe that they are fighting a regime and that if you are not with them, you are against them. I have actually lived in that kind of society so I know the difference and I know the power of language to mess with people.
I don't support JC. I think he would be a disaster for the country as PM. I am a Labour voter. I will not be bullied into voting against my conscience by bullshit like "fight the regime ".

TheBogQueen · 03/05/2017 09:57

What will it cost Diane?
£300,000?
Or £80M? Is that even correct?

Oh well never mind, I'm sure she's a really nice person.

(Is that what we are supposed to think?)

Bringmesunshite · 03/05/2017 09:59

£300m was the latest I heard. Thanks for being so casual with my tax payments.

makeourfuture · 03/05/2017 10:03

The PLP resigned, on condition that Corbyn be removed as leader. He did not remove them.

He was elected. And to be sure, a second election was held. If Starmer gets elected, no matter how I vote, I will strongly support him. If I don't like him I will campaign against his leadership.

LadyRoseate · 03/05/2017 10:08

Of course there's a difference between "government" and "regime", otherwise we wouldn't need both words. Regime has more authoritarian and overbearing connotations which is why you will tend to see it more often used in relation to Trump, Thatcher, Erdogan etc and probably less with Major or Merkel. It will often be used to indicate that you are talking about an administration that is less tolerant of opposition or tries to bring in sweeping, possibly unlawful changes. The former describes May (she has called an election in order to try to reduce opposition within parliament as she has openly said) and Trump for example. It's also regularly used about Corbyn's leadership of the Labour party meaning that he doesn't brook opposition.

You don't get to define what a word means, the speaking and writing population does. And anyway Mark used the word totally correctly as defined by the definition you quoted!

But I realise I am getting ridiculously over-invested and it doesn't matter anyway, and I should get back to work.

makeourfuture · 03/05/2017 10:17

Let me ask my "centrist" Labour comrades a question, what do you want us to do?

A month away from the election....when we see these things on social media....what do you want us to do?

Let's be open and frank.

makeourfuture · 03/05/2017 10:20

Do you want us to lose this election?

NoLotteryWinYet · 03/05/2017 10:20

i broadly agree with tom watson - vote labour if you like your local candidate, make it's clear labour is heading for a crushing defeat, whether us twatty traitors shut up or not about the crapness of the labour leadership team, JC is not convincing floating voters, all the polls indicate this. I do wish labour had a better leadership team, they ought to be romping to a huge victory against this tory party and they're not as they've embraced outdated policies in an attempt to turn the clock back to the 1970s.

Batgirlspants · 03/05/2017 10:22

make absolutkry nothing now it's far too late.

Labour will be saved by a massive Tory landslide as they were after Foot and eventually Blaire led us to victory as the tories imploded following Major and the Europe turmoil within the Tory party.

A Tory landslide will force Corbyn to piss off and someone sensible can reform the party again.

Labour should be ready to be fit to govern in 5 years or so with a good wind.

Take heart.

RoseGoldProsecco · 03/05/2017 10:23

"Do you want us to lose this election?"

It certainly seems that's what the shadow cabinet wants.

mousymary · 03/05/2017 10:23

Safe seats are a problem. I'm sure the people of Hackney would rather someone else represented them but it's a Labour stronghold. Same with any clown sitting on a big majority. Or when a "rising star" or "favourite" gets parachuted into a cushy seat.

Labour has the big problem of having little talent in Corbyn's team. One example is Angela Rayner, Shadow Education Secretary. She is appalling. Just think Catherine Tate, "Am I bovvered?" I posted on other thread on this subject that she is one of the most unpopular MPs when Labour arranged focus groups of their own voters.

If I were in either of these people's constituencies I'd be so despairing, but whaddayado?

NoLotteryWinYet · 03/05/2017 10:23

so it doesn't matter whether we want labour to win or not, what we wish makes no difference. Fwiw, (not much) I don't want Corbyn to win, no, they are a shower of shit and worse than the tories - I don't want them creating a situation where we need an IMF bailout due to their recklessness, a situation the national investment bank (leaving aside their other policies) could very likely cause. The min wage policy is predicted to cause an increase in unemployment also (see the IFS).

TheBogQueen · 03/05/2017 10:25

Labour just seem to have an aspiration other than not being the Tories.
It's so fucking depressing.

Headofthehive55 · 03/05/2017 10:27

Yes I think a defeat will force a rethink in the Labour Party.
It's for the best.

Batgirlspants · 03/05/2017 10:28

make yes as a Labour Party member I do I am afraid.

Corbyn and his team would be even worse for this countries safety and security than the Tories. They simply couldn't cope with Brexit negotiations which lets face it is sll that counts for the next few years.

nauticant · 03/05/2017 10:28

Do you want us to lose this election?

Yes, so we can learn from the defeat and do something productive as a result. To me the nightmare scenario is inevitable defeat and then not learning anything.

Batgirlspants · 03/05/2017 10:30

Oh agree mouse Rayner is appallingly bad and thick.

Batgirlspants · 03/05/2017 10:32

Yes I wouldn't put it past Corbyn not resigning in the face of a massive defeat. He's so bloody idiotic.

If he doesn't and the dubious 'new labour supporters' keep supporting him I think labour will split again like in the SDP days. And look how that went. Hmm

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/05/2017 10:38

Yes I wouldn't put it past Corbyn not resigning in the face of a massive defeat.

It is rumoured he won't.

Bejazzled · 03/05/2017 10:39

mousey I just heard that very person on Radio 5 live being interviewed.

It is a peculiar talent to be able to sound arrogant and self assured, yet thick and uninformed at the same time. Raynor and Abbot both have that talent.

TheBogQueen · 03/05/2017 10:48

If anyone think labour has the remotest chance of winning this election they need to get out more.

Labour is pegging behind the Conservatives in SCOTLAND!

makeourfuture · 03/05/2017 10:49

So you guys are, on a very public forum, seeking to help the opposition....perhaps gifting them five years with strong electoral backing....at this crucial juncture...

That is not my definition of loyalty....not at all.

BelleTheSheepdog · 03/05/2017 10:52

I think the threads here reflect rather than shape opinion!
