To ask how many sausages for an adult portion

Went to MILs for dinner today. She's done a sausage and bean casserole :P We got one sausage each. When SIL asked if we were on rations MIL pointed out that beans were protein too.... I do 2-3 sausages for an adult depending on size and meat content. How many do you do?

Two for women, three for men.

Meekonsandwich · 30/04/2017 01:19

Honestly because of their fat content, 1 IS a portion for sausages.

Yes I know it's unfair.

Guess what a portion of chips is??

Roughly 13 chips. I weighed them. Yup.

Lynnm63 · 30/04/2017 01:21

Three. I'd feel shortchanged with less.

pringlecat · 30/04/2017 01:31

I would have the equivalent of just one sausage for an adult in a casserole, but I'd have two or three types of beans and they would be the star of the show.

For sausages and mash or toad-in-the-hole, two sausages for an adult. Three if being extravagant.

EnidButton · 30/04/2017 02:12

Sarah I'm with you too. We have 3 each but that's only because it's a 6 pack. If they came in 8s I'd easily eat 4.

(I'm 8st11 5'6 for anyone who's thinking more than 2 means you must be overweight. Grin)

Koalablue · 30/04/2017 03:33

Meekonsandwich I agree with you. I used to eat two but now I'm trying to lose weight i have only one.

Chocarocker · 30/04/2017 03:36

My 1 year old would eat 1 sausage! Definitely not an adult portion.

befuddledgardener · 30/04/2017 03:56

It depends on the girth and length of the sausage in question. 2-3 usually.

XsaraHale · 30/04/2017 04:01

Worra yep, 2 and a half is just right!

In a casserole I do full and some chopped in different sizes...average for adults is 2-4. 1 year old will eat 2 if let her and 4 year old will eat a quarter of one...it all depends on individual appetite...so how can anyone dictate how much, especially when they have asked you over!
Do they visit you for dinner too?

XsaraHale · 30/04/2017 04:04

I use meat free sausages though so may make a difference? Don't tell Mil meat free have lots of protein... you'll only get half a sausage next time hehe

HMWelsch · 30/04/2017 04:44

2-5 depending on what they're served with. Mash, gravy, yorkie and veg then probably 3, with chips, 4. We love sausages and often make our own and would perhaps have 5 (of different sorts) without much else for a lazy weekend lunch.

user1491572121 · 30/04/2017 04:50

Yeah sausage casserole is a bit gross but could MIL be short of money OP? It's a budget sort of meal and with one sausage each, I'd think she was trying to make it cheap.

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2017 05:03

We would eat two each, if I had guests I'd put four in each as I wouldn't want them to be hungry and let them self serve.

One each is very low. Is there a money issue? Did she have to tell everyone only to take one each or did she portion it out and just give everyone a plate with one sausage on it so no one could take two by mistake?

Foggymist · 30/04/2017 05:27

We would have 2-2.5 each, could easily eat 3-4 if I was let but good quality sausages have such a high calorie content that it's just not necessary. Two of the Tesco finest sausages are about 400 calories, so before you add in any other food that's quite a lot for one part of dinner.

SiouxieQ · 30/04/2017 05:37

As many as I can stuff in to my big fat gob.

picklemepopcorn · 30/04/2017 05:40

I use three kinds of sausage in casserole, chorizo chunks, smoke pork ring and good sausages. It's all in chunks, you get about 1.5-2 each but it's so rich and tasty you don't notice.

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 05:51

I hate these ungrateful food threads.

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 05:55

HMWelsch

That's at least 1,000 calories. I'm not saying that to be judgey but to add some perspective on what 'tight' is and what a decent meal is.

Iris65 · 30/04/2017 06:08

Two. If its a heavy casserole full of beans etc then I'd give myself one and let others choose.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 30/04/2017 06:42

2-3. Not 1!

ShowMePotatoSalad · 30/04/2017 06:47

TBH if you think sausage casserole is "gross", that's fussy eater territory. It's really not gross at all - especially if you flavour it really well with some smoked paprika, garlic, fresh thyme...oof I could eat it now.

HMWelsch · 30/04/2017 07:01

@Trifleorbust

I'm 5'11 and very active so can get away with eating more than most probably.

I think 2-5 is a fair range.

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 07:06

HMWelsch:

Of course, you can eat what you like. But a normal, 500-600 calorie meal isn't stingy, it's just not what you would choose in your own home.

helpmesusan · 30/04/2017 07:06

Shocked that consensus is 2-3!

I would have 4 usually ( butcher's, not massive) and DH 5 or 6 if he is really hungry. Neither of us are overweight but I feel like a glutton now!

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 07:08

helpmesusan:

6 sausages in one meal? They're 200ish calories, aren't they? Plus whatever he has with them. I don't care what anyone else eats but by any standards that is a huge meal.
