To ask how many sausages for an adult portion

Went to MILs for dinner today. She's done a sausage and bean casserole :P We got one sausage each. When SIL asked if we were on rations MIL pointed out that beans were protein too.... I do 2-3 sausages for an adult depending on size and meat content. How many do you do?

I can't believe the number of people here putting different numbers for men and women.... seriously?
We would have a 1lb pack of 8 sausages between 3 of us.... so 3 each for DH and I and 2 for DS (8)

Biker47 · 30/04/2017 08:53

USually get packs of 6 sausages, so 3 each normally eatan with mash or in a fry up, if they are whole in a casserole 3 aswell, if they're chopped up in the casserole, normally bulk it out and get about 4 portions out of it, so; 1.5 each.

Men and women are different in many ways. You may not like the fact, but it's irrefutable. Men tend to be physically bigger, faster metabolisms and have a higher percentage of muscle meaning they need a higher number of calories to maintain a healthy weight.

Youremywifenow · 30/04/2017 08:57

At 9 months, my baby could eat 4 sausages in one go. She is a hardcore carnivore though

Trifleorbust · 30/04/2017 08:59

My DH will eat 3 sausages in sausage and mash. I won't eat more than 2. He doesn't get more food because he is a man, he gets it because I want less food than he does. That may be because he is bigger than me and more physically active.

PutThatPomBearBack · 30/04/2017 09:02

1 sausage will do our family of 8.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2017 09:04

My DP easily eats two or three times what I do, because he has a very active job and a muscular build. He would be starving on what I eat and I would make myself sick eating the amount that he does.

Most men will eat more than most women due to higher body weight/muscle mass, even if they are similarly active. That's biology not sexism.

3 pp, unless they're the fab ones our local butcher makes, which are a) enormous and b) don't shrink when cooked.

Don't know why sausage casserole is getting dissed as a cheap or inferior meal. Mine is fab and includes chunks of garlic sausage and smoked gammon as well as a pint of passata, slowly reduced, and a generous splash of Madeira.

Last time but one that I made it, we had some leftover dhal in the fridge and that went in too. Last time I made it, DP bemoaned the absence of spicy lentils, so I may have to make a bloody dhal before I make it next time. It's getting close to a cassoulet the amount of stuff that goes in it.

CasperGutman · 30/04/2017 09:11

Guideline daily amounts for men have 25% more calories (and 50% more saturated fat - particularly relevant for sausages!). Obviously these are based on average nutritional needs, but it's hardly unreasonable that there are families where men get more sausages!

Based on www.foodlabel.org.uk/label/gda_values.aspx

BarbaraofSeville · 30/04/2017 09:12

If it was Cassoulet or a Spanish Chorizo and bean stew, it would never get dissed as cheap or inferior Lakie despite being effectively the same thing.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 30/04/2017 09:45

5-6 sausages?!?!? OMG!!! The salt content alone...Shock

WayfaringStranger · 30/04/2017 10:07

This is difficult to answer - and yes, I'm taking it very, very seriously - because sausage sizes vary. However, one sausage is really not enough. YANBU.

I'd rather over cater than under cater and eat the rest as leftovers.

foundaspottysock · 30/04/2017 10:57

Dh would faint at the thought of 1! He has 4, the kids and I have 2 each.

GlitterGlue · 30/04/2017 11:06

Two or three. One is a small child's portion.

pringlecat · 30/04/2017 11:06

More than 3 sausages per person sounds too high unless that person has a physical job or is a gym bunny. As much as I like sausages, they're not exactly low in calories, salt or saturated fat.

anotherpoisonprince · 30/04/2017 11:10

Three. Unless they are paticularly large.

LaurieMarlow · 30/04/2017 11:14

Flying against the tide of public opinion here, but in a casserole that also has beans in it (and I presume other veg) 1 seems plenty to me. Beans are a healthier source of protein anyway.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/04/2017 11:18

One sausage per adult seems meagre. I'd have asked if could fish the beans out and exchange them for an extra sausage.

with a substantial casserole one each. chopped into pieces.

ILookedintheWater · 30/04/2017 11:27

If it felt insubstantial then it was OP. I feed 7 of us (3 adults, 3 teens, 1 preteen) with a pound of sausages (8 fat ones) if I'm doing a sausage casserole, but it's full of veg and beans, tomatoes and herbs, the sausages are chopped up and then I serve with mash and more veg (and it's delicious but I wouldn't serve it to visitors).

Bluntness100 · 30/04/2017 11:29

My nineteen year old daughter is a very tall very slim size eight, and even she would not think it was a meal if she got one sausage for her dinner. Very few adults eat just one sausage as part of their main meal, if they did they would come in smaller packs. The mother in law should have chopped them up to hide the fact she had only catered one sausage each.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/04/2017 11:32

'with a substantial casserole one each. chopped into pieces.'

That would make fishing up a bit of a chore, trying to make sure everyone had four bites of sausage each.

justnowords · 30/04/2017 11:35

id have 4 and dp would have 8. kids would have 2. id probably eat one whilst plating up Grin. One sausage does not a meal make, especially sausage casserole.

abbsisspartacus · 30/04/2017 11:38

I have gluten free sausages they are more dense than the regular ones so I can manage two my dd wants three
