To ask how many sausages for an adult portion

Went to MILs for dinner today. She's done a sausage and bean casserole :P We got one sausage each. When SIL asked if we were on rations MIL pointed out that beans were protein too.... I do 2-3 sausages for an adult depending on size and meat content. How many do you do?

crunched that's awful!! Your own mother said that?! Sad

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 01/05/2017 18:42

4 per adult 2 for almost 9 year old.

They are lovely butcher sausages and I love my meat, so my meat to vegetables differ from most people. I do love all vegetables too.

theclick · 01/05/2017 19:03

My DH would have three meat ones and I would have 2 quorn ones.

Lovingit81 · 01/05/2017 19:16

Ha what's the point!!!! One sausage!!!? Currently stuffing my pregnant face with a sausage casserole with MULTIPLE sausages Grin

eulmh · 01/05/2017 19:21

It depends on the person. I do two for me and my mum. I prob would only have 1.5 because I'm not a big meat eater but my husband would have 5! My dad certainly 3-4. Even my five year old son has 2. If I'm cooking for others I always over cater!

iamavodkadrinker · 01/05/2017 19:25

In this house we make a sausage last the whole week.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 01/05/2017 19:53

If we are talking link sausages then 2-3 per adult but if we are talking square sausage then 1 1/2 to 2 is plenty.

In a casserole situation then 1 1/2 would be a minimum (and I would only use so little if I was skint/ hadn't been to the shop / making a meal out of what was left in the fridge), but only if chopped up and loads of other veg in the casserole and a big helping of mash on the side.

1 sausage is a child portion.

Even a breakfast sandwich would be 2 sausages (or 1 square). 1 would be a bit mean for a main meal - even with other stuff on the plate.

I do one sausage in a sandwich. Quartered. White bloomer, Dijon mustard. No butter. I've had no complaints.

If there was no mustard I'd go for brown sauce. If the only option was red I'd go for no sauce at all.

Them's are my rules.

I knew a woman who made one pack of chipolatas last for two meals for herself, OH and two children. For each meal she and OH had one and a half chipolatas and the children had half each. I lost touch with her when she moved a fair distance away into a very large house. 'Wonder how she managed to afford that?

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 20:24

Katherine2626 I doubt that frugality with food was the main reason your acquaintance was able to buy a big house. But if it was, does that upset you?

JustMe77 · 01/05/2017 20:26

OH has 5 lol... Me and the grown up kids will have 2 maybe 3 and DD will eat 1..they're the high meat ones from the butchers. 1 for an adult is a snack surely?

riceuten · 01/05/2017 20:51

Depends on the size of the sausage

PigletJohn · 01/05/2017 21:59

Katie Hopkins likes a big sausage when she goes running down Regent Street, though I prefer not to watch.

monkeysaymonkeydo · 01/05/2017 22:07

In a sausage sandwich, usually 2 but my DP has what he refers to as a 'side sausage' as he wants 3 but it doesn't fit in the bread so he just has it separately!

I would usually have 2 in a casserole as theres beans and veg in there too. 3 if it was just with mash and peas.

JennyHolzersGhost · 01/05/2017 22:22

What the hell is square sausage ?!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 01/05/2017 22:25

It's a Scottish 'delicacy'. Bright pink sausage meat in a square, no casing. It's not very nice.

TheEternalForever · 01/05/2017 22:26

JennyHolzersGhost I believe PP was talking about square sausage/lorne sausage, it's a Scottish thing.

Ahh I was beaten to it! I wanted to show off my Scottish knowledge now I've been living here for years Grin Wink

AwaywiththePixies27 · 01/05/2017 22:34

Oh I used to love square sausage as a kid!

Saturn2016 · 01/05/2017 22:36

Three!!

notangelinajolie · 01/05/2017 22:42

I buy 6 big ones from the butchers. I have one, dd has two and greedy pig dh has 3. One is enough for me as I don't really like them that much and prefers to pad my dinner with mash Smile

limitedperiodonly · 01/05/2017 22:59

It always gets a bit competitive on here about sausage eating.

Three at the least if you're a girl. Six or more if you have a willy

wildbhoysmama · 01/05/2017 23:12

Yes, limited. My OH has 5, sometimes 6, DS1 3.5 , DS2 2.5, DS3 2 and me none ( I'm veggie!). Is it just me or is everyone else serving small dinners? OH is very lean and all DC tall and healthy so no overfeeding.
And Bunty, it's sacrilege to diss the square sausage! Find a really good butcher's one ( in a roll with HP sauce) it is sooooo much better than a link - and that's coming from a veggie with only memory from childhood!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 02/05/2017 00:11

I see the square sausage question has already been answered. A good square sausage (from a butcher) is 100% better than links.

I particularly like the square sausages with the black pudding in the middle or the ones with the yellow crumb round the edge. Yum.

Another thought, do you get beef link sausages outside Scotland? I think beef links are the best for a casserole (or stewed links as it's known locally), but I have never seen them in a supermarket anytime I've been in England. I do also like a nice pork sausage on a sandwich but not keen on ones that have loads of herbs in them.

This thread has put me in the mood for sausages. I will need to have some for breakfast tomorrow.
