What's your most shameful crappy meal for the DC?

Sometimes I don't want to think about what to make for dinner, I make pasta with nothing but olive oil and a bit of salt on top and then I scatter chorizo on it.

The kids love it and think it's a treat. 'Grin

Today (I'm in Oz and it's night here) I made them that but served them with corn on the cob too as a side vegetable.

What are your crappy, easy go-to meals for kids?

Last night we had oven cooked M&S southen fried chicken breasts in Aldi brioche buns with oven sweet potato fries, coleslaw and cucumber on the side. Very quick, a bit processed probably but a fine dinner in my book

What is wrong with this? I love those M&S Breaded chicken fillets

Storminateapot · 26/04/2017 22:50

Fresh potato gnocchi (Sainsbury's) with a microwaved pot of carbonara sauce poured over & grated Parmesan on top. Done in 5 minutes.

Fadingmemory · 26/04/2017 22:52

Tinned ravioli. An abomination but easy and DD1 would have lived on it.

AppearingNormal · 26/04/2017 22:56

Fuck me, I've entered the twilight zone.

DustyMaiden · 26/04/2017 22:58

Sausage, pasta, cheese and beans.

gameofchance · 26/04/2017 23:04

OMG. All the so-called crap meals are my 'go-to' options!

I can spend ages making a meal from scratch (e.g. mild thai curry, casserole) which DS will not eat - yet put him in front of sausages, ham sandwich, pasta with pesto and he is a happy little boy.

Can people tell me what they do make which is 'good' and their DC eat? And please factor in fact DS is lactose intolerant and I am veggie, so already often making a variety of meals

Fuck me, I've entered the twilight zone.

Ha! you and me both! Grin Lol at the absolute blatant stealth posting what some posters as classing as shameful crappy meals Wink

Anyway, back IRL - Frozen Iceland toad in the hole throws hands across brow at the horror of it

Also - never saw a bit of fruit or vegetable in his packed lunch as wouldn't eat it whips self

Now an adult? He eats anything and everything - things I wouldn't touch such as pigeon or venison etc. I'd like to think I did him a favour feeding him that iceland meal every once in a while probably turned him off processed meat for life! Wink

The thing is, for me if food is processed, then I mentally put it in the "Crap" box in my head.

That includes anything breaded, anything like chorizo which is just full of fat and salt....and also white pasta.

I tend to try to stick to whole foods with what we eat...I'm not saying my kids never have a fishfinger...of course they do...and sometimes a McDonalds when we're out....but 5 or 6 meals out of seven is made up of homecooked meat, fish and veg or salad. I do potatoes about three times a week and they're not great....we have rice or quinoa to go with things or bread.

My meal of white pasta and chorizo IS pretty crap and devoid of nutrition.

My 2yo DD's favourite meal in the whole world is Peppa Pig cheesy pasta, I think it's 39p or 3 for £1 in B&M. She gets it out of the drawer and pleads to have it for dinner Grin

I've done pancakes for dinner before. And not the savoury kind.

Also, after a big big lunch on a weekend, not so hungry in the evening, so just made bread and butter pudding with custard for dinner Blush

user1491572121 · 27/04/2017 03:41

LongWalk no that sounds lovely! Not unlike baked potato with cheese and beans I expect.

Pizza from bakers delight Grin

beingsunny · 27/04/2017 04:43

Or yoghurt and frozen berries like last night, was just happy to get him to eat before passing out from jet lag

XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:08

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt I remember 'sugar butty' being a staple in my friend's house when young...Always with loads of butter and white bread of course😀 Can you imagine the sugar tax debate being faced with one of these sandwiches?! Hehe

XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:18

Not necessarily shameful but my can't be bothered filler is... Egg, pea, potato.
Chop and fry medium onion in whatever oil you use, chip the peeled potatoes into small pieces, add to onions, leave to soften/cook...whisk 4-6 eggs (however many you have/add milk in wanted) , add tin of processed peas once potatoes are done, fold in egg, should look like a 'thicker' scrambled egg, serve with ketchup...recipe has been used in our family for decades, not sure if anyone else cooks this or it has a proper name lol Really nice for breakfast too, veggie friendly and cheap.

XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:19

*garden peas will do nicely and children prefer them it seems

user1491572121 · 27/04/2017 05:21

Xsara it sounds like a Frittata sort of...

OP posts:
XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:27

I Always keep a supply of cheese and sweet corn samosas and chocolate samosas in the freezer...those evenings of having nothing to eat all day...add tomato sauce or cream respectively and it makes a meal hehe (At least they are homemade...some consolation 😉)

BakedBeeeen · 27/04/2017 05:31

If you serve anything (processed, out of the freezer) with peas on the side it cancels out the laziness imo. What's wrong with a can of tomato soup for heaven's sake?!

XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:31

Yeah, that is the closest I can think of it resembling anything...a frittata. Maybe the ancestors were impatient with waiting for it to cook and decided to speed up the process. Never tried it cooked through, may do that with a bit of cheese...hmmh

XsaraHale · 27/04/2017 05:35

BakedBeeeen Tin of tomato soup, piping hot, thick white bread, lots of butter and bit of cheese thrown in? Heavenly! Guess what we'll be having for dinner this evening haha

Nessie71 · 27/04/2017 05:47

Cannot beat a tin of tomato soup..but it has to be heinz and warm butterd bread.
