What's your most shameful crappy meal for the DC?

Sometimes I don't want to think about what to make for dinner, I make pasta with nothing but olive oil and a bit of salt on top and then I scatter chorizo on it.

The kids love it and think it's a treat. 'Grin

Today (I'm in Oz and it's night here) I made them that but served them with corn on the cob too as a side vegetable.

What are your crappy, easy go-to meals for kids?

My kids are the annoying type who hate freezer food (fish fingers, chips, waffles etc) but both of them LOVE white pasta with some butter and grated cheese on. Normally I chuck in some peas and broccoli, but some nights I do just let them have pasta and cheese. They eat well otherwise, so it does no harm! I did once read somewhere that pesto pasta was perceived to be a healthy middle class meal for children but actually, nutritionally it's not good at all! Forget where I read it...

Marcipex · 26/04/2017 20:00

Curry flavour instant noodles with frozen peas and chopped hard boiled eggs.
Not even sorry.

user1492374376 · 26/04/2017 20:01

Caviar (from a can) on toast. Easy and quick and the little ones love it. Not many nutrients though Blush

Cailleach · 26/04/2017 20:04

Sweetcorn sandwiches on white bread with real butter.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 26/04/2017 20:06

Wow, lots of these meals are just standard for my fussy kids. Generally, the longer it's taken to make (and the more nutritious it is) the less likely they are to eat it. Though tonight as I was still working at dinner time, DH fed them; now he's gone out and I've just made myself cheese on toast with tomato soup. Brilliant comfort food!

Charlie Bigham ready meal

AdoraBell · 26/04/2017 20:10

Lots of the above, tinned or even, shock horror, packet soup. Cheese and crackers, 'picnic dinner' the odd McDonald's, Domino's, pasta with minimal effort sauce.

As has already been said, it's all food and if they are eating that is better than going hungry because what's available isn't deemed acceptable.

bimbobaggins · 26/04/2017 20:20

Mine is toast or a bowl of cereal. On the menu at least twice a week

Tartyflette · 26/04/2017 20:46

Tin of Stagg 'Dynamite Hot' chili con carne, heated up and served on toast, topped with a jumbo frankfurter and a slice or two of plastic cheese. Melted in the microwave.
Just for me .

BigGrannyPants · 26/04/2017 20:54

Mattesons smoked sausage and plain spaghetti Blush

bunnylove99 · 26/04/2017 21:01

PumpkinPie2016 that's freaky. Mine is exactly the same as yours and we also call it a 'picnic' . The emergency/lazy hot meal is the same too, but mine won't eat potato waffles - potato smiles instead!

augustusglupe · 26/04/2017 21:05

My DD is in her late twenties now...but she's never forgiven me for feeding her Smash with Campbell's meatballs Blush

CeCeBloomer · 26/04/2017 21:06

I just don't understand who lives in mumsnet world. I can only think of one of about 15 friends with kids aged 2-7 that doesn't regularly (including myself) give what is considered a 'shameful' meal every evening. I am delighted when my daughter manages baked beans or cucumber alongside said meal

Flopjustwantscoffee · 26/04/2017 21:16

I have a thing where if the meal is accompanied by tomatoes/ cucumber/ lettuce then the meal is healthy. Even though there is no chance my son will eat those things whilst there are (for example) sausages present. I like to imagine that at least some of the vitamins will leach out onto the food next to them...

RoystonVaseySmegHead · 26/04/2017 21:21

Baked beans. Tinned meatballs. Toast. Dry cereal. Noodles. I don't give a buggery what people think, if ds eats something then it's better than nothing.. we live off beige food and the occasional piece of sweetcorn or green bean.. fussy eaters are horrible little creatures at times! But at just turned 4, ds eats at least twice what his cousin who's 5.5 does in a meal so I'm not bothered by admitting that most of the above are regular meals, but on a good day he'll eat his veggies before any other part of his dinner so I class that as balanced... ish... Daddystilllost · 26/04/2017 21:43

Judychicago You feel crappy about giving your kids Beans & cheese? Beans are full of protein and cheese, although greasy, is full of calcium. That is, surprisingly, a very nutritious meal

ilovepixie · 26/04/2017 21:57

Mrskoala A can of spezzy brew and packet of Rothmans.

Can I come round to yours for tea!

BlackberryandNettle · 26/04/2017 22:02

Quick after nursery supper for two under three, either toast and butter plus a cheese string, or one of those mama Mia microwave lasagnas, followed by an ambrosia custards/rice pudding or yoghurt. That they have had a tea at nursery already is my justification!

twoforthepriceofone22 · 26/04/2017 22:06

Well left to his own devices ds would live off ham sandwiches, crisps and fruit which is handy for a cba meal!

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 26/04/2017 22:09

The Unbeatable "ALLSORTS TEA"

This is essentially bread (cut into odd shapes) bit of cheese, bit of cucumber, bread sticks, crisps, some twisty pasta, bit of ham, red pepper, maybe some raw carrot. Basically it's whatever I have kicking about the fridge.then I put a blanket on the living room floor and let them watch shite as they eat it.

Disclaimer- they do usually have a proper meal at school/nursery

Pinkypierainbowdash · 26/04/2017 22:09

@choccywoccywoowah

I think you said what im thinking.

Op whats bad about your meals? apart from the salt .

PenelopeFlintstone · 26/04/2017 22:12

Mine is "Ugh. Just find something, Kids".

ThisAintALoveSong · 26/04/2017 22:12

Cheese on toast as a lunch if I can't be bothered cooking anything laborious. I occasionally add tomatoes which both my sons won't even eat

bellarinaroo · 26/04/2017 22:26

If these things are the bad stuff..please tell me what the good meals are!

BigGrannyPants · 26/04/2017 22:35

This thread is making me hungry lol
