What's your most shameful crappy meal for the DC?

Sometimes I don't want to think about what to make for dinner, I make pasta with nothing but olive oil and a bit of salt on top and then I scatter chorizo on it.

The kids love it and think it's a treat. 'Grin

Today (I'm in Oz and it's night here) I made them that but served them with corn on the cob too as a side vegetable.

What are your crappy, easy go-to meals for kids?

3yo has got crackers and humous tonight!

squizita · 26/04/2017 19:15

Mine loves a sectioned off plate with buttered bread, tomato and cucumber, ham and a few of those organix crisp things in each "zone".
This is infinitely better than say, a sandwich and a snack. If I have some leftover salad it is literally buttering the bread.

Winifredgoose · 26/04/2017 19:17

Some of these are crazy. Just because something is quick to prepare, you shouldn't feel guilty fgs. Things like boiled eggs/omelette served with vegetables, picnic type food, or even beans and cheese on toast are healthy.

WritingHome · 26/04/2017 19:25

I used to have banana sandwiches on white bread a lot as a kid. dd won't even try this!

squizita my dd is 11 and still loves a plate with compartments for old times sake. I put small amounts of different things into each section and she loves it. It is more a lunch time thing for us these days, but I used to marvel at how I could entice her to try lots of things simply by using that plate when she was smaller and very fussy

GrumpyOldBag · 26/04/2017 19:26

last night we had burnt pizza.

tonight it's fish fingers.

BaconAndAvocado · 26/04/2017 19:28

Hot dog pasta. Chopped hot dogs, jar of tomato pasta sauce, pasta twists.

The DCs adore this meal as do our foreign students.

PumpkinPie2016 · 26/04/2017 19:30

A 'picnic' with ham sandwich, baby bel, grapes, crisps and a yogurt - DS thinks it's great!

Or chicken dippers with potato waffle and beans.

squizita · 26/04/2017 19:33

Winifred but there's the 'sacrificing mum' thing that awful FB memes, and forums where sanctimums feel "sad" about one junk dinner ever when they are probably just aa culpable and living an online perfection fantasy etc have made such a thing nowadays. The more effort and pain, the more you give up, the better mum you are... it's very toxic and mixed up with loads of internalised sexism. It gives insecure people and bullies - including passive agressive ones - a sense of control.
Of course it's a load of bollocks and an illusion.
The plain fact is you could put LOADS if effort into one element of parenting and not be great at another. Or you could burn out. It's a focus which isn't about the kids at all but the mum.

Think about a banana - healthy, convenient, even has its own packaging. Kids love them.
But mums/women aren't supposed to be smart, they're supposed to work hard or they "don't deserve" or "neglect" their kids.

It's a vile mindset and I'd hate to think how many cases of pnd etc are made worse by this culture.

Anyway rant over.

I do loads of instant meals and these are far healthier than some of the prepared meals (with loads of fat, cream or a big dessert after) we have on Sunday. These quick meals are usually a ready made carb (crackers, bread, cold leftover pasta etc), cold meat, egg or cheese and salad veggies. Cooking would be similar elements but hot. Child likes cool food anyway.

abbsisspartacus · 26/04/2017 19:33

We call it benefits pasta it is pasta butter and ketchup maybe a sprinkle of cheese

RitaMills · 26/04/2017 19:35

DS loves our pizza parties, which is just me ordering in a big greasy pizza, cookies and ice cream.

Homemade probably fish fingers, potato waffle and one of those bean pods, very lazy dinner.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 26/04/2017 19:36

Oh when I'm feeling flush, we go to the local dirty takeaway and DS either has an entire 14in pizza (pepperoni and pineapple) or a half pound burger with kebab meat and onion rings....and chips. Occasionally he'll save some pizza for the next day's lunch.

And he's bloody slim. Ratbag.

One of my aunts used to do this and I loved it! She didn't call it benefits pasta tho lol

squizita · 26/04/2017 19:38

Does anyone do muffin pizza? Muffins (the bread roll type not cake) with grated cheese and ketchup plus any toppings you have to hand, grill 5 min.

ModreB · 26/04/2017 19:40

Toast, spaghetti hoops and a fried egg. My go to can't be arsed dinner.

MrsKoala · 26/04/2017 19:43

A can of spezzy brew and packet of Rothmans.

Littlepond · 26/04/2017 19:43

Biscuits and ice cream.

Ericaequites · 26/04/2017 19:44

Minute rice, fried Spam, canned peas, and applesauce were a quick meal when I was a chikd. I didn't know rice could taste good until university.

SaturdayJane · 26/04/2017 19:45

My kids love Super Noodles - I add veg to make myself feel better.
I once made the mistake of telling my son he could pick "anything" he wanted for tea, he had tinned tomatoes and Super Noodles on toast and loved it!

BuzzKillington · 26/04/2017 19:45

Fish fingers in a wrap with tartare, then put in the panini maker with sweetcorn on the side, which has to be tinned.

PegLegAntoine · 26/04/2017 19:45

HAMWICHES!!! I'm actually kind of gutted the DCs like them now, for a while I'd have the whole pack of Bernard Matthews crapness to myself (not all at once I hasten to add).

If only Turkey Twizzlers still existed though. I'll never forgive Jamie Oliver for that.

5BlueHydrangea · 26/04/2017 19:46

My dd likes a tin of chicken in white sauce, mixed with a tin of baked beans and a packet of microwave (or real on occasion) rice. Sometimes a tin of sweetcorn sneaks in too. She is 23 so it's her own invention. We call it slop!

Upanddownroundandround · 26/04/2017 19:47

Pizza, chicken nuggets with tomatoes and cucumber. I like to view it as carbs, protein and vegetables. Grin

Aquahol1 · 26/04/2017 19:50

Tonight during and after visit from my Aunty bringing late Easter chocs and holiday gift for DC from my Gran...
Chocolate and sea side rock followed by
Findus crispy pancakes & beans.

Easter Smile

Dairymilkmuncher · 26/04/2017 19:53

Ready meals! You can buy wee Scottish ones here like mince and tatties, stovies or haggis neeps and tatties which would be really nice meals if I home cooked them but they cost £1 and are so quick and both my DS love them so more often than I should

Quick and lazy home cooked would be a tin on toast or frozen mash/chips with more frozen or tinned stuff or instant noodles we call those "daddy specials"

RedBugMug · 26/04/2017 19:55

mug shots and frankfurters
