What's your most shameful crappy meal for the DC?

Sometimes I don't want to think about what to make for dinner, I make pasta with nothing but olive oil and a bit of salt on top and then I scatter chorizo on it.

The kids love it and think it's a treat. 'Grin

Today (I'm in Oz and it's night here) I made them that but served them with corn on the cob too as a side vegetable.

What are your crappy, easy go-to meals for kids?

Aldi brioche *

FourForYouGlenCoco · 26/04/2017 15:46

My ultimate lazy tea for the kids is fish fingers and Yorkshire puddings. Sometimes I go all out and add some peas & sweet corn (from the freezer, natch).
Quite a few of these meals are pretty standard fare at mine (pesto pasta, I'm looking at you!) I don't think any of them are particularly terrible. They get plenty of decent food too, and at least they're eating!

WritingHome · 26/04/2017 15:49

Thymelord they are the essential details to make me feel better about serving what is in fact a fairly crap dinner.....not just any burgers...M&S burgers.......Grin

ThymeLord · 26/04/2017 15:51

You are clearly just trying to make me feel inadequate that my southern fried chicken comes from Farmfoods Grin

WritingHome · 26/04/2017 15:55

We don't have farmfoods here but if we did...I'd be in there like a shot! we have an iceland opening soon and I am counting down the days!!

Aldi do sell southern fried chicken but haven't tried it because dd was / is a fussy bugger and once I get her to accept something I don't mess with it unless I literally cannot get it anymore. Else I run the gauntlet of 'this tastes funny...I don't like it....'

sailorcherries · 26/04/2017 15:55

I didn't give this to DS for lunch (he had a school baked potato with a serving of beans and cheese Shock) but I have definitely just passed off two babybel cheeses, half an easter egg and a packet of crisps with a glass of fresh orange as a suitable lunch.

MdmeShoutalot · 26/04/2017 15:58

Taco Bell when the kids want Chipotle and I'm too lazy to drive across town.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/04/2017 15:58

Supernoodles or cereal

peaceloveandbiscuits · 26/04/2017 16:08

FGS at PPs sad about all the poor babies being fed Supernoodles. At least they're branded Grin

When I lived with my very depressed and overwhelmed dad as a child we had a rotation of fish fingers and spaghetti hoops, pasta and cheese, and instant noodles, all from Aldi or Lidl. We didn't die, though, funnily enough.

It's not a bad thing to want to feed your children wholesome, nutritious food for every meal, but it's not shameful to admit that it's difficult if not impossible sometimes. The occasional bowl of cereal for lunch or tea is not abusive, and most children think of it as a great treat.

The other day I had absolutely no money for food shopping and had exhausted the scrambled eggs/beans/fish fingers on toast options, so I had to dig to the back of the freezer for something to feed 2yo DS for his tea. I found 2 Quorn fillets, one portion of frozen mash, about 3 Aunt Bessie's frozen parsnips, a frozen yorskhire pudding, and peas and sweetcorn. I was so proud of myself for pulling a proper dinner out of thin air, but the wretch only ate the Yorkshire pudding and the peas and sweetcorn Hmm talk about deflated. I should have stuck with cereal.

charliethebear · 26/04/2017 16:29

My absolute favourite quick dinner is a tin of beans and sausages and maybe a slice of toast shoved in the microwave with loads of cheese 😋
I
also used to have just a tub of Pringles and dip for dinner, but I wouldn't feed that to anyone else (I dont want to share my Pringles Grin)..might do that again next time I'm alone. Pizza toasties are also great with a tin of cambells chicken soup, and I've always been a fan of chicken dippers or fish fingers with frozen wedges and beans, and maybe cheese coleslaw too.
I dont really understand pimping up instant noodles? If your gonna bother adding veg +protein you might as well make pasta or an actual stir fry?

ThymeLord · 26/04/2017 16:31

Just think of all the turkey twizzlers you can buy once Iceland opens Writing Grin

Alicorn · 26/04/2017 17:13

Either a waffle sandwich or peanut butter on crumpets.

Yes, that's a potato waffle between a slice of brown bread.

One of my kids has food ishoos. Doesn't eat anything that's remotely wet for instance. And can and does go all day without eating or drinking. As long as they have eaten something I don't really give a shit what it is.

Just for balance tonight's tea is oven baked chicken, roasties and veg.

RomanticWalksToTheFridge · 26/04/2017 17:17

I saw on Food network the Korean chef Judy something get all the ingredients together for a delicious, exotic, amazing Korean soup, then use supernoodles (putting aside the flavour sachet) as the noodles.

Dinner that night for DH and I was supernoodles with prawns, chilli, fresh ginger, fresh coriander, garlic, baby corn and bamboo shoots.

As recommended by experts. Grin

ElisavetaFartsonira · 26/04/2017 17:21

Toast. With more toast on the side.

toomanypetals · 26/04/2017 17:24

Erm some of these are standard food surely?

We're having fish fingers, mash ad peas tonight. It's a weekly staple and healthy enough imo.

Any food eaten too often, lack of variation is unhealthy.

GallicosCats · 26/04/2017 17:35

Deconstructed, or should I say unconstructed, meals often happen at weekend lunchtimes. DD rips off a few lettuce leaves and celery sticks, munches a few crackers then rolls a couple of slices of ham. DS grabs some salami slices and a chunk of cheese. I might have some bread and ham. DH meanwhile is at the allotment and has a packet of crisps amd a choc bar. Now that's a quality lunch!Grin

c0lette · 26/04/2017 17:42

This thread is just making me hungry...

c0lette · 26/04/2017 17:44

pasta peas and cheese is the go-to in our house, sometimes with additional ketchup.

WeAreEternal · 26/04/2017 17:50

Pasta, frozen veg (peas, sweetcorn, carrots, peppers and broccoli) and pesto from a jar.

It's my go to 'can't be bothered/don't have time to cook' meal as it literally takes 10 minutes and I just throw it all into a pan and it takes no effort.

DS (10) loves it and it's one of his favourite dishes. Blush

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 26/04/2017 17:55

Tonight DS had malt loaf, with ham, some grapes and some apple. It's all he wanted and I'm much too tired to argue Blush

user1491148352 · 26/04/2017 18:11

Sugar sandwiches - white sugar on white bread and butter. We sometimes add chocolate sprinkles. Blush

peaceloveandbiscuits · 26/04/2017 18:34

Ooh banana and sugar sandwiches on Safeway Savers white bread was a staple tea when we were children.

mygorgeousmilo · 26/04/2017 19:02

'Baked' potato smothered with butter and cheese. Tonnes of pepper. The potato isn't baked though, I microwave until soft, then fry it so it's skin is crispy.... takes about 15 mins total

ADisappearingDreamOfYesterday · 26/04/2017 19:05

I once "caught" my mother giving my DC a sugar lump each as a treat (the DC thought this was wonderful of course).

It's a good job this was pre-MN or I would have definitely set some boundaries and gone NC Grin

jumpingjellybeann · 26/04/2017 19:09

Tomato ketchup sandwiches and a bag of crisps Blush
