Aibu to think that Carole Middleton went out of her way to marry off Kate & Pippa to royalty & society millionaires?? Wills & James Matthews are hardly oil paintings, would the girls look at them twice if they worked in Tesco? Reading about Pippa's wedding tonight & it seems the sisters were both quite the social climbers in Marlborough which was encouraged by their mother? I have friends in similar circles & it seems they are very hard to break into if you are not "old money/landed gentry types" so I think Carole achieved what she set out to do! Roll on Pippa's wedding, looking forward to seeing the dress!

I like the Middletons, I must say. Nothing objectionable about them whatsoever. I do not understand why people are so sniffy about them. The British caste system is a very odd bird indeed.

(As an aside, D14, when I was growing up in south Dublin suburb that had been a sleepy village up to about two years before I arrived, there was one RC national school and one CoI national school. The RC school was heavily oversubscribed, and the CoI only took in non CoI children up to the point where their class sizes were still reasonable, which was perfectly fine. I was sent to a convent school a few miles up the road as a result. My parents didn't want me in a junior infants class with 54 other children and one teacher, and by all accounts overcrowding made it a pretty rough school. By the early 80s however, the RC school and the CoI school had become a huge draw for the suburb, and another RC school had been built because of a big county council development in the 70s.

I live in the US where the public school system is secular and people who want a religious based or religion-affiliated education for their children pay tuition. My DCs went to a RC elementary and public HS. The public schools are obliged to take anyone who registers and is deemed to meet residency requirements, and provide an appropriate education for all. This includes SN students. I think the separation of church and state has a lot going for it.)

It does, and especially (critically) when it comes to education.

Luckily it's separated where I am, too.

The pope isn't allowed to marry, also the pope isn't given the title through the accident of birth. He's also head of the Roman Catholic church across the world. It's ridiculous to use him as a comparison. I was talking about the absurdity of the monachy not being allowed to marry a catholic, or a Hindu for that matter. So absurd that it has now been partly amended. That's how bad it was, yet you want to keep comparing it to other perceived "inequalities".

MrsJamesMathews · 20/04/2017 19:43

You all still banging on about the Catholics?

Oh well... it's going to have to be another photo then.

Hands up who would. ✋🏻

And I second the posters asking why it's Mrs Middleton, not Mr, who's drawing your ire?
Maybe it's because Mr Middleton comes across more as a man who doesn't get involved in that sort of thing, we've never read anything about him to think he's that bothered. Do we really have to make sure that the man isn't left out of any criticism just for the sake of it. Carole Middleton seems to be the driving force in the family, no need to bring her husband into it just for the sake of making things equal.

savedbythebell · 20/04/2017 19:46

Very nice james let's hope we can have an end to it all now. It's tiresome and unnecessary.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/04/2017 19:47

It's not ridiculous to use him as a comparison - it's exactly the same.

It's only different to you, because you seem to give the Pope greater status.

They are both the heads of their respective religions - Queen Elizabeth is also head of her religion around the world.

You keep trying to separate monarch and religion - they're inseparable.

Religion is absurd - at the heart of every religion is exclusivity - 'we're right and you're wrong'. The monarch not being able to marry someone from a different religion is simply symptomatic of the much bigger problem!

MrsJamesMathews · 20/04/2017 19:48

Good point bell. Because all those DM articles about Carole Middleton are bound to have been so thoroughly investigated and authenticated that they surely would have mentioned Mike Middleton if he'd had anything to do with the socially ambitious voodoo that has clearly been going on.

Hmm
MrsJamesMathews · 20/04/2017 19:49

What's tiresome? The photos, the Catholics or the Middletons?

savedbythebell · 20/04/2017 20:23

The comparison doesn't make sense, yes the pope is the head of the RC, but so what, i'm talking about how wrong it was about the marriage rules for the royals. Please give me an equal comparison about a catholic injustice on a he same scale, even instead of constantly telling us the pope is the head of the RC.
James no not the photos, i was referring to the dowager and her not letting things drop.

savedbythebell · 20/04/2017 20:23

Just let it drop dowager, i'm tired of your senseless drivel

savedbythebell · 20/04/2017 20:31

It's only different to you, because you seem to give the Pope greater status.
Damn right i do. I'm a republican, i don't give any status to an over privileged unelected head of state who is only there through the accident of birth.

LouiseBrooks · 20/04/2017 20:33

Edsheeran the Aspinalls used to own a zoo or a wildlife park, can't remember which.

derxa · 20/04/2017 20:36

the Aspinalls used to own a zoo or a wildlife park, can't remember which I'm sure they still own Howletts and Port Lympe wildlife parks.
Wonderful places

MrsJames my point was more about how on mumsnet, if a woman is criticised there are always loads coming on saying, "but why isn't "he" being criticised, it seems to be an automatic reaction. For example, say if someone gives an opinion on an outfit or a hairstyle of a woman celebrity there's always loads of "why aren't you criticising the "husbands" clothes, hair etc. It's like looking for an imagined slight when there isn't any., itms. But when a man is criticised nobody comes on asking why his "wife" isn't being criticised. It's annoying. People are individual, we shouldn't have to dissect a "couple" just to make things fair.

WitchQueenofNewOrleans · 20/04/2017 20:44

Wasn't one of the Aspinalls a pal of "Lucky" Lord Lucan, and there's a wacky theory that Lucan topped himself (or was handed a revolver and told to do the decent thing) and was fed to the lions at the zoo.

derxa · 20/04/2017 20:46

Mr and Mrs Middleton are so discreet that I've never heard them speak on the media or read any quotes from them. It's no wonder that William loves them. They're totally loyal.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/04/2017 21:19

Please give me an equal comparison about a catholic injustice on a he same scale

Are you seriously asking that?

An entire gender (of actual believers) are unable to become priests (let alone pope!) - and you have a bee in your bonnet because a Catholic can't marry the head of another religion?

None so blind.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/04/2017 21:20

The Middletons haven't really put a foot wrong, to be fair to them.

KateMiddletonsOtherMum · 20/04/2017 21:21

Why IS EVERYONE IGNORING ME????..

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/04/2017 21:23

Sorry OtherMum Grin

mathanxiety · 20/04/2017 21:24

SavedbytheBell - did you not study English history from Henry VIII to the Glorious Revolution? The answer to why a RC cannot become Monarch can be found in that timeframe.

TizzyDongue · 20/04/2017 21:27

It's 'cause you're a Middleton, *KateMiddletonsOtherMum".

VanillaSugar · 20/04/2017 21:30

Thank you dowager Cuntess - let us partake of the same goblet of wait wain. And vair naice it is too. Donchaknow.

squoosh · 20/04/2017 21:34

'Wasn't one of the Aspinalls a pal of "Lucky" Lord Lucan'

Yes. There was a TV dramatisation last year of the Lucan scandal. Aspinall came across as being deeply creepy indeed.
