Who to vote for in General Election?

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 18/04/2017 12:20

Aargh.

Would normally vote for Lib Dems (feel like I should apologise for this!), and voted for them in the last two elections. In an ideal world, I'd vote for them or Labour, but I'm not keen on Jeremy Corbyn's (or Tim Farron's) leadership. Really don't want to vote Conservative.

Wondering perhaps about voting for the Women's Equality Party? They seem pretty good, but are still quite a small party.

What does everyone else think?

He shared a stage with Hamas who have vowed to kill every Jew on the Earth.

Justanotherlurker · 20/04/2017 15:59

I laughed at this article from the Indy earlier as its clearly satire, but after reading FireSquirrel's comment I am thinking it could be quite close to the bone.

Which brings us to another way Corbyn can win: the media. Like the polls, they know nothing. If you listen to what passes as our press in this country, it will probably sound like Corbyn has no media strategy and repeatedly refuses to talk to the press. But this is what the press will say when a Labour leader refuses to play their game; they’ll just vindictively fill in the blanks. There's nothing you can do, except wholeheartedly support Corbyn and radical change.

dontneedthesunshine · 20/04/2017 15:59

batgirlpants I agree with every word but where I live (narrow lab majority, con second, ukip third, big leave vote) I have to vote labour, voting for anyone else hands the seat to the tories, which is far, far worse imo. It'll still take a small miracle to keep the conservatives out here.

ShatnersWig · 20/04/2017 16:00

Fire You clearly don't pay much attention if you don't understand the issues within the party concerning anti-Semitism and Corbyn's terrorist links (what Maggie did is actually irrelevant, two wrongs don't make a right)

Pettywoman · 20/04/2017 16:02

That Indie article is absolutely horrible. How offensive!

Batgirlspants · 20/04/2017 16:03

dontneed I see your point I really do.

Fire with the greatest possible respect you need to do more research as shatners says.

Amazed you say you are Jewish and have no idea about this. Shocking.

ExplodedCloud · 20/04/2017 16:04

And if that opens the door to peace? Fighting isn't doing much good.

ExplodedCloud · 20/04/2017 16:05

sunshine yes

olliegarchy99 · 20/04/2017 16:15

tactical voting - how childish.
Is this what the suffragettes campaigned for so that women could vote?
I find it bizarre that there are misguided people who so hate one particular party that they ignore the manifesto of each party and then vote for any one of the others even if they do not agree with that party's policies.
Come on - surely you are all more intelligent than that? Hmm

FireSquirrel · 20/04/2017 16:15

I do have an idea about it, I just don't agree with it.

Batgirlspants · 20/04/2017 16:24

I wonder what the suffragettes would make of the comment by Corbyns idiot organiser regarding the female journo Martha Kierney who asked Corbyn a serious question and the idiot comments on her nice top? Angry

Presumably the suffragettes would encourage every woman to vote for who they think is the best potential PM to lead us through arguable the most difficult and dangerous period facing us since WW2.

Corbyn blames the media bias the establishment and corporations for all the ills. He's racist too. Remind you of anyone??

FireSquirrel · 20/04/2017 16:29

'I could tell you about my own experiences, how I’ve never experienced or witnessed anti-Semitism inside the party – but that’s just what I’ve seen, non-Jewish defenders of my religion will claim. My experiences, and those of countless other Corbyn-supporting Jewish members who I’ve spoken to, aren’t reflective of what’s really going on, apparently.

Now, we only need look at the most high-profile of cases to see that anti-Semitism is by no means a product of Corbyn’s supporters. Naz Shah, MP for Bradford West, was rightly suspended for sharing anti-Semitic posts on Facebook, not a Corbynite but a backer of Yvette Cooper in the last leadership election. Ken Livingstone, similarly sanctioned for his remarks about Hitler, has been a party grandee for decades. An insurgent? I think not.

For years now I’ve travelled across the UK to report from far-right, fascist and neo-Nazi rallies, and the counter-demonstrations that take place alongside. I’ve seen the real threat that faces Jews in the country, those who profess hatred for Jews and our religion, who wear swastikas as badges of honour, who’ll salute like a Nazi in front of your face. Where was your concern for my community then?

It’s the left, and Corbyn’s supporters, who’ve put their bodies on the line time and time again to protect us from these racist organisations.

That’s why these cries of anti-Semitism make a mockery of a real and present danger. Corbyn’s commitment to fighting discrimination and prejudice has been well documented for decades. His supporters are those who’ve stood alongside him. Accusing these people now of peddling prejudice is nothing but political point-scoring at its worst. It undermines real hatred, and waters down the impact of calling out anti-Semitism when it rears its ugly head.'

dontneedthesunshine · 20/04/2017 16:47

I don't see my vote as childish, looking back over just the last few months alone we're seeing huge cuts to education, the reintroduction of grammer schools, people dying on trolleys in hospital corridors while Jeremy Hunt chats to private medical insurers in New York about how they can 'help' the NHS, foreign aid becoming conditional on countries signing trade deals with us, huge increases in homelessness and people reliant on foodbanks, people actually considering or commiting suicide because of cruel benefit cuts, slamming the door in the face of those poor kids in Calais after we had said they could come here, the work and pensions minister defending zero hours contracts, I could go on and on and on and I haven't even started on brexit, imo the current conservatives are dangerous and destructive, I'm not hung up on any particular party or ideology but I will vote positively, using my brain, intelligence and the rights that the suffragettes gave me to keep these people out.

Batgirlspants · 20/04/2017 16:51

fire commens select committee report on Corbyns incompetence in fighting racism in the ranks and the position of Chakrabarti.

FireSquirrel · 20/04/2017 17:12

Are you jewish, out of curiosity? Because a big part of being an ally to a marginalised group is listening to how the members of that group actually feel, rather than telling them how they should feel. Again, I am Jewish and don't feel Corbyn is antisemitic and as far as I'm aware neither do any of my friends or family. No-one in this thread has been able to give me an example of anything Corbyn has personally said that would make him antisemitic. Sharing a platform with someone who holds antisemitic views does not make him antisemitic himself, and accusing him of being so takes focus away from the actual antisemitism happening all around us.

HKittyCat · 20/04/2017 17:17

My constituency had a 41 vote Conservative lead last time so I shall most definitely be voting for the lovely chap representing labour, I checked his voting record and i'm confident he will represent my interests :)

nInachu · 20/04/2017 17:30

Anyone who isnt Tory or UKIP.

Batgirlspants · 20/04/2017 18:01

Dawn Butler the top gate idiot from today just mixed up costa with Starbucks and tax on radio 4 just now.

She was probably desperate to get back to the whirlpool she charged to tax payers on her second home.

Link to other Corbyn thread.

Still poor petal has had a bad day. Facing probing questions about policy is tiring isn't it. Shock

HPFA · 20/04/2017 18:07

Still poor petal has had a bad day. Facing probing questions about policy is tiring isn't it.

May is going to be as fresh as a daisy at the end then since she appears not to be deigning to tell us about any policies at all and yesterday refused to take any questions - probably having been made to look silly by Nick Robinson.

Even the most hostile anti-Corbyn journalists were giving him credit today for actually attempting to answer questions - they probably gave him an easier ride in consequence.

ExplodedCloud · 20/04/2017 18:13

It didn't go well for her. Mind I think Eddie Mair can tie most people up in knots.

Batgirlspants · 20/04/2017 18:18

To be fair he was gentle with her and it was still excruciating.

HPFA I don't think Theresa would have made the top comment do you?

We must have better I need another 'portillo' moment and that looks years away under Corbyn. Sad

samG76 · 20/04/2017 18:22

Firesquirrel -

"how members of that group actually feel"

as Jewish support for Corbyn seems to be well below 10% (some polls suggest around 5%) , it seems that members of the Jewish community have made their feelings quite clear. It sounds as if most of that number are your friend s or family.

As for anti-semitism, the point about his associates only goes so far. How about inviting someone for tea in the commons when he knew they had a shocking record of anti-semitism, including invoking the blood libel.

HPFA · 20/04/2017 18:30

I can see the logic behind the May decision - they have obviously decided to avoid any possibility of a mistake by having her say nothing at all.

It really is awful that a PM is pretty much asking us to vote for her on the basis of "Trust me, I know best"

Corbyn is toast anyway but if I were him I think I would just go and give an interview every day with questions and spend the rest of the day doing the John Major soapbox trick. It would be a good contrast and frankly, he can hardly make things worse for himself. Suspect he would also get some lenient coverage from the Press who are clearly fairly disgusted with May's antics.
