Am I too old for rainbow hair?

I bleached and dyed my long hair yesterday. It was previously an acceptable shade of burgundy. It's now a rainbow of aqua and pink with some gold bits. I love it.

My mum has made a catsbumface at me and told me I'm too old to muck about with my hair like this. She thinks it's too long anyway and that women of a certain age should have much shorter hair (she's been saying that to me for the last ten years).

I'm 37. Is she right? Does it look desperate and sad on a mother of teenagers, as she thinks?

(FYI I don't actually care, but I'm interested to see whether people agree with her...)

37 is young!! Do what you like OP. Wear it with confidence. Helen Mirren dyed her hair pink not so long ago and remind your mum that old ladies used to be fond of a blue rinse!! Not that yours is anything like that!

Giddyaunt18 · 15/04/2017 18:06

Jeez how rude are those saying it's badly done? Ignore OP.

charlievictor9 · 15/04/2017 18:16

I'm 37 and have nearly waist-length blonde hair dip-dyed pink. My auntie is 72 and has a bleach-blonde crop with a lilac streaked fringe. We both look awesome! 🤣 I think yours looks great & am v impressed you did it yourself

Charlie. That's going to look fab. Are you going to have the base colour as dark as the model. I sometimes have a similar dye but I go dark brown rather than black as it makes me look washed out. Are you going to post a picture 👍🏻😊

MamaLazarou · 15/04/2017 21:06

I think rainbow hair can look awesome at any age if it's been professionally done (or as good as).

CharlieSierra · 15/04/2017 21:09

My hair is pretty dark brown already, it was naturally and it still suits me. I might post a picture Blush

CharlieSierra · 15/04/2017 21:11

NotNow does it last? I have my colour done every 5 weeks anyway, but I'll be disappointed if the vibrancy doesn't last.

dementedma · 15/04/2017 21:15

not a fan of rainbow hair personally, but then as mine is a deep purple and I'm 53, I'm not in a position to comment!
I home dye it with Castings Plum and have had so many people say nice things about how much they love the colour.

NotNowNow · 15/04/2017 21:19

Charlie The reds don't last as longs the blues do. Mine gets a lot less vibrant quite quickly but I top up the salon colour with Bleach London colours at home after a week or so. I don't mind the fact that the colours fade a bit as they are still pretty.

The salon can advise you on what type of shampoo to use. I play a lot of sport so I'm forever washing my hair so that probably makes it fade quicker.

Isawahatonce · 15/04/2017 21:24

I think it looks lovely, OP. You make me want to dye my hair Grin

CheshireChat · 15/04/2017 21:50

You have similar hair to mine OP, just mine is purple and blue. I found that the best thing for my bleached hair are serum type leave in treatments as they leave the hair soft.

Also don't be afraid to leave the hair dye in for hours/ overnight as it won't damage your hair.

And it'll look better if you blend- these dyes are like kids paints so you can mix them and it'll create a nice, soft look.

Have fun!

I think beyond 18-20 the 'i like this colour, lets buy bleach and some dye' just looks a bit scruffy (unless youve got a hairdresser friend to help.) Part of that is because, anedotally, people who seem to do that chemically damage their hair then spend weeks trying to condition treatment it etc.

Not about being too old for bright colours (even if its not to my taste) but I think you can tell by the finish/hair condition when a professional has done it.

My old hairdresser had her hair all sorts of colours e.g. grey with purple bayalage / black with turqoise and it always looked immaculate. It would probably have looked a mess if your average person tried to recreate it at home.

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 00:30

I got married (age 31) with neon pink ombre hair. It was done professionally - my entire wedding colours were planned around my hair!

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 00:34

(Bridal) pink hair don't care!

bananafish beautiful!

HowSmug · 16/04/2017 01:57

Wow bananafish I love your hair. It's lovely.

MaisyPops · 16/04/2017 07:11

bananafish
I love your hair.
Totally what I was getting at (e.g. nothing about being 'too old' but the quality/finish makes a massive difference(

comedycentral · 16/04/2017 07:29

I think you all look lovely! Just remember to keep it nice and healthy so it always looks it's best.

thegreylady · 16/04/2017 08:30

My best friend is 72 and has pink and grey striped hair! It looks amazing.

bananafish81 · 16/04/2017 12:12

Thanks ladies! I'm a big fan of rainbow and silver grey hair - I was 30 here so had my hair tinted silver, but it would look rocking on someone older with naturally grey hair I reckon!!

I really don't get the grey fashion on younger people! I spend a fortune covering mine up.
