Am I too old for rainbow hair?

I bleached and dyed my long hair yesterday. It was previously an acceptable shade of burgundy. It's now a rainbow of aqua and pink with some gold bits. I love it.

My mum has made a catsbumface at me and told me I'm too old to muck about with my hair like this. She thinks it's too long anyway and that women of a certain age should have much shorter hair (she's been saying that to me for the last ten years).

I'm 37. Is she right? Does it look desperate and sad on a mother of teenagers, as she thinks?

(FYI I don't actually care, but I'm interested to see whether people agree with her...)

Op, your hair is terrible. The colour isn't awful but the condition is. You're not too old for coloured hair, but you're old enough to know how to look after your hair.

daisychain01 · 14/04/2017 02:27

I think there's an age limit on not having brightly coloured hair. After 40 it should be mandated, and should be on the list of protected characteristics, so that if you go for an interview they positively discriminate and always give the My-Little-Pony candidate the job. It brightens up the workplace and stops people being too serious in life.

It wouldn't work for me, my hair is fine and quite curly, I'd love long straight hair like your's OP!!

daisychain01 · 14/04/2017 02:28

Sorry, there should be an age limit..... that should say!

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 14/04/2017 02:52

I love it and if it makes you happy, keep it.

My hair is back to brown after being purple, blue, green, red...not all at once, but I've had a whole rainbow. Wink Hair should be fun.

Riddo · 14/04/2017 03:25

I love rainbow hair and would definitely have it, the cost is the only thing stopping me.

I had bright pink streaks in it a few years ago (I was 43) and I loved it. It doesn't matter what other people think, if you like it, that's all that matters. Smile

I agree with Apple I think it was who said there's no problem with dying your hair a bright colour but when you're older, it can make you look haggard if it's done badly.

It often looks more clown-like than mermaid-like after a certain age. About 30 is the limit to look really pretty with it. Once you begin ageing, certain looks can drag you down a bit facially.

EnidButton · 14/04/2017 07:12

Did I miss the bit where the OP asked if people liked her hair and for opinions on the condition of it?

Maybe I missed a bit but pretty sure she was just asking if anyone agreed there was an age limit on brightly coloured hair then posted pics to show what colours she meant.

CaptainCallisto · 14/04/2017 07:41

I'm 35 and as soon as I've got enough length back on the top of my hair I shall be doing this. Obviously without the elf ears. My hairdresser is very excited because I've been saying I'd love to for years and haven't had the confidence!

^This is exactly what I thought. I love rainbow hair and was excited for a pic, but in the nicest possible way OP I think you should lay off the bleach and let your hair regain some natural condition.

BackInBlack78 · 14/04/2017 07:48

I'm 38...!

You don't look 38!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/04/2017 08:18

RicketyCricket can I ask what product you used to get that lovely deep teal?

Fanciedachange17 · 14/04/2017 08:35

captain that is one beautiful hair pic and please have the elf ears as well, they are so cute!

OP I thought you have lovely hair, so thick and pretty. I think some of the comments have been a bit mean tbh. You are not too old to enjoy life and express yourself however you see fit. I wish I had hair like yours but I am liking the sound of some of the styles with hidden colours underneath. May investigate further...

WheresMaHairyToe · 14/04/2017 08:39

My mum thinks I'm too old for either bra strap length (last year) or my current very very short pixie. Basically anything that isn't her hairstyle!

I'm 40. I can't do bright colours for work, but I'm off for Easter so it's going teal. Grin

NotNowNow · 14/04/2017 10:05

ShoeLady and MaBumble. I love both of your hair. Mine is often very similar to Shoes. I think having streaks of colour is a good balance and means that the condition of the hair is better.

im actually looking forward to when my natural hair colour goes completely grey.....

saracrewe2 · 14/04/2017 10:25

I didn't mean my comment in nastiness, and no, OP did not ask if we like it or not. However, the lack of condition in her hair probably makes her look older (can't see her face in the pic) Bleached dry hair makes people look haggardly. Disclaimer: I am certainly no oil painting and I make very little effort, so OP probably looks a lot better than me.

AlpacaLypse · 14/04/2017 10:39

I've been mulling over whether or not to go cheerful hair again after 20 years. You lot have inspired me. I'm going to let my teenage daughters have fun with my hair (and have checked with my hairdresser, she's up for sorting it out after they go back to school if the end result is truly disastrous!).

RicketyCricket · 14/04/2017 10:41

Breakfast it was equal parts Directions Alpine Green and Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise Smile.

Peanutbuttercheese · 14/04/2017 10:47

My sister is 60 and has black hair with gentle feathering of peacock colours put through it and it looks really beautiful. But she has it done at a professional salon. Many rainbow colours I have seen in the street look bad purely because they have been done badly. Idea fine, execution less so.

CountFosco · 14/04/2017 20:19

Definitely no age limit to having brightly coloured hair. In fact I agree with the PPs that say we should all take it up as we get older. Roll on grey hair I can dye bright blue!

TBH I think you should be proud that at 37 you are still able to horrify your mother. Mine told me my shoes were a disgrace last summer (I had old and scruffy trainers on since I was on holiday), I was chuffed!

April229 · 14/04/2017 20:33

Not my cup of tea, but it wouldn't have been if you were 18.

Would judge it in any way, tip of the hat for being bold and changing things up - life's too short to worry about others views on your hair :)

April229 · 14/04/2017 20:35

Oh, meant to say WOULD NOT judge it in anyway x

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/04/2017 20:50

RicketyCricket thanks for dye details!

QueenofPentacles · 14/04/2017 22:56

when I go gray i shall do that but my hair is very dark still

Ravenesque · 15/04/2017 17:34

I'm 52 (no idea how that happened, but I'm going with it) and my hair is v. short, as close to an undercut as you can get when your hair is stupidly fine and feels like a baby's hair, and currently a pastel pink. Was a pastel lilac, before that silver. has been a mermaid mix of turquoise and sea green.

People who make Donald Trump mouth faces at women daring to do things that the Trump facer thinks they shouldn't need to eff,the eff off and eff off again for luck.
