Am I too old for rainbow hair?

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 09:23

I bleached and dyed my long hair yesterday. It was previously an acceptable shade of burgundy. It's now a rainbow of aqua and pink with some gold bits. I love it.

My mum has made a catsbumface at me and told me I'm too old to muck about with my hair like this. She thinks it's too long anyway and that women of a certain age should have much shorter hair (she's been saying that to me for the last ten years).

I'm 37. Is she right? Does it look desperate and sad on a mother of teenagers, as she thinks?

(FYI I don't actually care, but I'm interested to see whether people agree with her...)

I don't particularly believe you are too old for this- however, I strongly believe that it's poorly done. Your hair looks not in great condition, probably from the bleach & so on. Please have a cut

patronsaintofglocks · 12/04/2017 09:50

Youre not too old at all.
I think the problem is that your hair is badly done and doesn't look 'rainbow'- it looks a mess.

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 09:52

Meh. I like it.

Jesus... 30's is 'of a certain age' now? Confused

There's a lovely older lady who I walk past on my way home from work sometimes coming out of a weekly social club, who has had pink hair (complete with party hat at Christmas Grin) and now purple, and I think she looks great and she always makes me smile Smile

It would be boring if we were all the same, you rock your rainbow hair OP.

shovetheholly · 12/04/2017 09:54

No-one is ever too old for rainbow hair, but a 37 year old is DEFINITELY not too old.

shovetheholly · 12/04/2017 09:55

And I think your hair looks lovely! I wish I could grow mine that long!

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 09:56

Honestly it makes me smile every time I look at it. I'm well chuffed. And I've bought loads of different colours so I can redo it/change it up a bit every few weeks.

Great in theory.

Agree with patron that it hasn't been done well though.

NevermetaGilesIlike · 12/04/2017 09:56

Your mum is crusty.

Xenophile · 12/04/2017 09:56

I have beautiful aquamarine streaks in my hair and I am considerably older than you, so no, you look great and your mum can take her catsbumface elsewhere. Grin

In fact, if I get time this afternoon, I'm going to re colour my hair in your honour.

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 09:57

Well I did it myself and I'm not a hairdresser. It's not meant to win any awards, it's meant to make me smile. Which it does.

43 here and vivid pink. It's great OP. I love the different colours and the length.
Just be sure to use a good conditioner to stop it getting too frazzled. Smile

My DSM currently has pink and purple hair. She calls it her 'My Little Pony' hair. She's 65 and until very recently a VP at an investment bank.

Until recently my hair was red with slices of pink and purple through it. Got bored, now it's tiger striped. I'm 32.

No, you're not too old. At all!

frieda909 · 12/04/2017 10:02

"I love it."

Then that's all that matters!

And I love seeing elderly women with long hair. I hope to be one myself one day! I've never understood this idea that we have to chop off our hair past a 'certain age'.

KittyB52 · 12/04/2017 10:04

I love it! I want to colour my hair too, but have mousey hair and am not sure I could pull it off. I saw a style on an advert which had colour on only the under layers of hair. I'm 44, and a new SAHM - an ideal time to try something different as I won't be working for a few months. Grin

GeekLove · 12/04/2017 10:05

My long hair is natural on top (a deep red ginger colour) with a faded turquoise fringe, with the hair underneath a similar colour - looks metallic in certain lights. I also have a high -ish undercut over the ears - that does need a little tidying since I want a sharp tip at the end. I'm the same age as you and am a materials engineer - I am currently re-colouring it with paler blue dye every week to make it fade out neater.

I do find that you have to pay attention to what you wash you hair with. I use a keratine-rich shampoo once a week and condition my hair everytime I wash it (at least twice a week). I also do a coconut oil treatment when I massage coconut oil along the middle and ends and leave it braded for a few hours - your hair needs a little TLC for that.

Error404usernamenotfound · 12/04/2017 10:07

I love rainbow hair - I saw a woman who must have been in her 70s with shocking pink hair the other day and told DH that I fully intend to have colourful hair when I'm old (have to look 'professional' for now though).

I really hate the assumption that women have to stop doing certain things or looking a certain way past 30, and much prefer seeing people who assert their own style regardless of any outdated rules.

Your mum needs to be told to butt out, methinks

Error404usernamenotfound · 12/04/2017 10:09

I agree with pps who say you need a conditioning treatment though, as it does look a bit damaged. Besides, it'll make the colour stand out more Grin

I don't think you are too old no. I also have long hair, well, to just past my boobs and I'm not gonna cut it short any time soon and I'm 47. However it's brown all over. 😁

I'm not a fan of rainbow hair, So I wouldn't do it myself,, but I like the reddy gold lower part, if it makes you happy go for it, I wouldn't look at you and think she's too old or that looks bad, I'd just think you looked quirky and a bit different.

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 10:12

Yep, I'm going to be deep conditioning it every other night. I've fucked it by double bleaching. Go big or go home, I always say.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 12/04/2017 10:15

Love it. I don't think there's an age limit on rainbow hair and the older I get, the more I want to do wacky colours.
I'm planning on going pink in the summer.

MrsEvadneCake · 12/04/2017 10:15

It's a good saying Grin

pipsqueak25 · 12/04/2017 10:16

great colour but it will need good conditioning as it looks a bit dry tbh, but why should you have bright hair at any age ? it's only a number.
when punks dyed their hair in the '70s women of a certain age used to tut and grumble about how silly they looked clean forgetting that they had a blue/ pink/ lilac rinse on their own heads !
here's hoping you do this into your 80s and beyond ! Smile
