Am I too old for rainbow hair?

I bleached and dyed my long hair yesterday. It was previously an acceptable shade of burgundy. It's now a rainbow of aqua and pink with some gold bits. I love it.

My mum has made a catsbumface at me and told me I'm too old to muck about with my hair like this. She thinks it's too long anyway and that women of a certain age should have much shorter hair (she's been saying that to me for the last ten years).

I'm 37. Is she right? Does it look desperate and sad on a mother of teenagers, as she thinks?

(FYI I don't actually care, but I'm interested to see whether people agree with her...)

*why shouldn't you have bright hair at any age ?

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 12/04/2017 10:24

Before I even your post my response was 'fuck, no'

It looks fab, love rainbow hair! I have warned DH that I'm not going to go grow old gracefully instead I'll be fully embracing my eccentric side!

I do wonder about seeing a hairdresser only I haven't been near one since 2009 and although I have tidied up my undercut it could do with being neater.

Thing is how do you find a good hairdresser? Plus I quite like mucking about with cling film and swimming caps.

If your hair is coloured underneath you can go for months without bleaching the regrowth - it's not to hard to just bleach the roots while not bleaching the already bleached hair.

Your mum sounds like mine. She loves to comment on the appearance of other women, usually in a very bitchy way. I think it's down to poor self esteem. I recently bought myself a pair of Dr Martens and she went on and on asking why I'd bought them and that they look like men's work boots etc.

People should be allowed to dress however they like regardless of age.

I'm 35, and I have rainbow hair!

I like your hair, a lot. You're not that much older than me, and I plan on going back to blue and staying in the realm of bold and colourful until my hair falls out! It's no one's business but your own, and your mum can just like it or lump it!

DancingLedge · 12/04/2017 11:06

Love the colour mix.

20 years since DM kindly informed me I was now too old for long hair.
15 years since I was kindly informed now too old for really short hair.
Sky still not fallen in.

I'm noticing fewer people troubling themselves with these "rules" these days, and jolly good thing this is.

Ladymadness · 12/04/2017 11:06

Life is to short to not have amazing coloured hair .
I had mine dyed bright purple a few years back and I loved it but it took too much upkeep so changed it x

Batgirlspants · 12/04/2017 11:07

Not for me but you bloody well do what you want op.

GeekLove · 12/04/2017 11:22

That's why I like natural on top with contrasting colours underneath - it's much lower maintenance than it looks.
I saw a woman at InFest with mousy-brown natural hair about chin length but with longer bright green with a slightly longer fluorescent yellow underneath - it looked awesome - sort of an MN haircut with attitude.

OpalMoon · 12/04/2017 11:33

Orange I love that explosion of colour. I would gladly wear it but "non natural" hair colour is against company policy Sad

DevelopingDetritus · 12/04/2017 11:39

Oh god, my mums one for this "when are you getting your hair cut", I don't want my bloody hair short! I'm going to have long grey hair when I'm 100, so there!

ApplePaltrow21 · 12/04/2017 11:45

well... I'll say it. I don't think you are too old for rainbow hair but I do think there is a certain age where people look too old for badly dyed hair and both pictures of hair on this thread look badly dyed to me! Sorry!

OP's hair - ends look terribly dry and damaged. Would really benefit from a cut. The colors also look kind of awful but it could just be a photo. Maybe in real life, it looks aqua not st paddy's day green?

So many amazing types of rainbow hair to do. I think after a certain age, having hair in bad condition ages you/makes you looks super scruffy and this hair seems a bit like that to me.

I would try Olaplex next time or even consider going to a hairdressers.

oranges that's fab! True 'rainbow' hair

op with the best will in the world it's not rainbow hair at all. It's just a couple of clashing colours.

Do it like oranges has and properly piss your mum off

lakehouse · 12/04/2017 12:00

Nothing to do with age but those photos are AWFUL. Really horrific whether you're 35 or 5. Made me shudder!

Amockingjayhey · 12/04/2017 12:02

I didn't even need to read your post (but i did anyway! ) Because my answer is no no no . Never too old !

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 12:05

It's my shit photo skills/dark bathroom. IRL it's a pale green blue and pink and honestly looks lovely (to me) It is in poor condition though.

I know the dye job's not perfect but I have plenty left and can play about with it over the next few days or weeks or whatever.

But hey, thanks for the lovely comments. You've made me feel GREAT. Hmm

Never too old! I love rainbow hair, I love pastel hair & I love bright hair :) I have dyed brown hair myself as am too worried about bleaching damage to do anything else to it or I would have pink, purple & blue hair all at once.

I like the bottom half of your hair but it doesn't go too well with the top half, if you want my opinion then (as kindly as possible) I think the orange/green combo is not as flattering as other colours. You have gone warm & cool at the same time. Next time maybe dye vertically instead of horizontally & go for warm or cool colours, so take that lovely orange & put it with red or yellow. Or take the green & do it with blue & purple.

I'd love to have lovely thick hair like yours though :)

JaneJeffer · 12/04/2017 12:12

I think your happiness shouldn't depend on the approval of strangers on the Internet. If you like it then that's all that matters.

frieda909 · 12/04/2017 12:13

Oh god, mine is like this too. Not just with other women either, she seems to feel the need to comment on everyone she sees.

I went on holiday with her last year and she drove me mad with her running commentary: 'Look, that man's reading a comic book, isn't he too old for a comic cook?... Oooh that man just went to the bar to get himself another drink and his wife hasn't even finished hers yet...Look at what that lady's wearing, I really think people should make an effort when they come to dinner...Oh dear, I don't think that child should be allowed to play with that phone at the dinner table...' on and on and on! Angry

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 12/04/2017 12:13

I love it! You're never too old for whatever hair you want!

My hairs very resistant to bleach so as soon as I go grey/white, then I'll have rainbow hair too Wink Grin

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 12:14

I'm not after approval! I just wanted to know whether other people think there should be an age limit on brightly coloured hair.

I don't much care what anyone else thinks, but calling it 'horrific' etc is unnecessary, IMO.

I do appreciate all the helpful comments about olaplex and conditioner though.
