Am I too old for rainbow hair?

I bleached and dyed my long hair yesterday. It was previously an acceptable shade of burgundy. It's now a rainbow of aqua and pink with some gold bits. I love it.

My mum has made a catsbumface at me and told me I'm too old to muck about with my hair like this. She thinks it's too long anyway and that women of a certain age should have much shorter hair (she's been saying that to me for the last ten years).

I'm 37. Is she right? Does it look desperate and sad on a mother of teenagers, as she thinks?

(FYI I don't actually care, but I'm interested to see whether people agree with her...)

  1. 37 is not 'too old' for anything except perhaps leopard print boob tubes.
  2. In the olden days women had long hair into their 70s and older.
  3. Who is she to decide what you should and shouldn't do with your hair?
  4. What hair dye did you use and will you do mine?
Gingernaut · 12/04/2017 18:30

I've got red hair. I don't want to bleach my hair as it loses condition and I don't want roots. I envy people with multicoloured, rainbow hair.

My greys are coming through as thick white hairs.

I've got decades to go before I'm completely white.

^Then* I'm hitting the dye bottles.

I'm 49.

You are not too old.

SerialReJoiner · 12/04/2017 18:34

I plan to do this when my hair goes white (only a few strands, still a long time to wait) because I can't be bothered to bleach it first. I think it's pretty.

DPotter · 12/04/2017 18:35

Love the hair - wish I had your nerve!

Chinnygirl · 12/04/2017 18:42

I don't like it but that has really nothing to do with age.

By the way, mrs. Slocombe of the 70s series "Are you being served?" had all kinds of coloured hair while still looking matronly.

goose1964 · 12/04/2017 18:45

I would love rainbow hair, in my 50s but can't afford it

CheeseQueen · 12/04/2017 19:14

I'm absolutely loving all the hair colours on this thread! You're NEVER too old for rainbow hair, they look great.
You say you love it, so ignore all those who don't, you're not harming anyone!

QueenArseClangers · 12/04/2017 19:32

I'm older than you OP.

My mum's in her 80s and loves bright hair!

Looks fab! Im 36 and fancy teal for the ends, maybe in my summer hols

SallyGinnamon · 12/04/2017 20:18

What bluechairs said. I think fake coloured hair looks ridiculous like a toddler playing my little pony. But if it makes you happy and your employer doesn't care it's up to you.

If I met you I'd keep my trap shut and my thoughts to myself.

Rainydayspending · 12/04/2017 20:23

I prefer fake coloured hair. Rainbows in general are in at the moment. The world could do with some colour!

movpov · 12/04/2017 20:44

If you like it that's all that matters. Don't listen to anyone else

Batghee · 12/04/2017 20:47

its beautiful!!! You arent too old at all. The most glamorous women make the bravest style choices. Look at Xandra Rhodes and Vivienne Westwood!

Who wants to be boring!!

LookAtTheFlowersKerry · 12/04/2017 21:19

Thank you!

I'm a SAHM, which has partly informed my choice because it's got to have some perks, right?

Do what you want. it's your hair. F**k what anybody else thinks.

DistanceCall · 12/04/2017 23:16

You should get a haircut. Not because you're too old for the length or colour (there is no such thing as a hair limit) but because it's damaged and doesn't look as nice as it could.

And yes, condition like crazy.

DistanceCall · 12/04/2017 23:33

*Age limit, not hair limit! Argh.

fannydaggerz · 12/04/2017 23:35

Any age is perfect for rainbow hair. Go for it.

LilacSpatula · 12/04/2017 23:36

Beaut!

crazycatgal · 12/04/2017 23:41

I don't think you're too old for rainbow hair, but I think when dealing with bleach and complex colouring that it should be left to professionals to get the best look.

MidniteScribbler · 12/04/2017 23:46

I'm 40 and have waist length very bright fire ombre hair. I'm a teacher, and the kids love it. I did check with my boss first and he said to go for it.

Only one parent has had a go at me about it, but seeing as they were about a size 20 in leggings and a boob tube with badly bleached blonde hair and a fag hanging out of their fingers, zero fucks were given.

HemanOrSheRa · 12/04/2017 23:56

Ah Midnite you've just reminded me of my favourite primary school teacherSmile. She was so lovely and had long, long red hair which I now realise was heavily hennaed (sp). I'm 45 and I can still remember her hair! She played the guitar and smelled of gum, ciggie smoke and patchouli. And I loved her Smile.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 12/04/2017 23:59

You're never too old for rainbow hair and it looks brilliant.

PrincessJaki · 13/04/2017 03:19

You are never too old, unless you believe it. We live in a world where context means more than tradition now. Live the way you want to, be free little unicorn! (I'm 43, been doing pastel colors for 2 years now - I love it!!!)

MrsEvadneCake · 13/04/2017 09:10

Just thought I'd share my tacky and desperate hair Grin that is actually beautiful and not in the least bit desperate of me and that I wear with confidence and pride.
