I am just being astounded how many people seem to have their doctor thinking they are vitamin D deficient, and i"m sure everyone used to worry about this in the 70s.

I"be been saying i feel tired and minor depressed for ages but now the flap is all 'vitamin d', and similarly with narcissism...Someone disagrees..Narcissist, someone knows a subject better than you? Narc. Someone has nicer car...Narc... AIBU???

And people wore less sunscreen in the 70s, so less vit d problems

I have Vitamin D deficiency due to having Pernicious Anaemia, and it is vital for me to take supplements, I have injections of B12 just to stay alive

I nearly died in 2015 because of my anaemia

My DD had a blood test, and yes, she's Vit D deficient, so no not a fad in my house.

You can't win though. There are people with skin cancer due to being sunburnt in the 1970s/1980s before we realised we needed to put sunscreen on and now everyone covers up and gets vit D deficiency instead.

Lack of sufficient Vit D in childhood may (I stress may) be a factor in developing MS. I have MS . I drag my dd into the sunlight-however thin- to get Vit D . My MS nurse who poo poo-ed a lot of snake oil bollocks said it was a good idea for her and me because Vit D strengthens brain function. She might need it, I do need it.

Where the hell is the connection between vitamin d and narcissism? They're certainly nothing to like trousers.....

From my POV you are entirely wrong on the vitamin D point. My son - mixed race, olive skinned - is vitamin D deficient. It was diagnosed quite by chance when an X-ray for a suspected broken wrist revealed that his growth plates were not closing as they should. Blood tests confirmed vitamin d deficiency was the cause. His consultant said he was increasingly seeing cases that had progressed as far as rickets, particularly in dark-skinned people, and women who cover up for religious reasons. It is a real problem that those most at risk must be made aware of!

My Dd has vitamin d deficiency and anemia at the moment which is as result of her having coeliac disease where her body struggles to absorbe vitamins found naturally in food despite following a strict diet.

Lack of vitamin D may be a factor in breast cancer too, particularly in Triple Negative BC which, interestingly, has a higher incidence among black women who also tend to have lower vitamin D levels. I am currently receiving treatment for TNBC and my Vit D levels were found to be extremely low.

Scoff if you like, OP, but I'm not taking any chances and will take supplements for the rest of my life.

One in five people in the UK are Vitamin D deficient. We get too little sun over the summer months (winter sun is too low to provide vit D) to last through the year. Plus we now wear sunscreen (which wasn't generally bothered with in the 70s) and are indoors more than we used to be. There are a lot of dark skinned people and people who dress modestly who don't get sun on their bodies at all.

So no, Vit D deficiency is not a fad. As someone has said, a blood test will show levels. Narcissism I can't say as don't know enough about it.

Yeah OP all this increased medical knowledge is just silly. We were better off in the old days when illnesses were cured by buying a saint's relic from a passing peddler. My leprosy was cured by eating the ground up toenail of St Cuthbert.

Tell that to a friend who ended up in ITU instead of at her wedding because she was so deficient in Vit D she collapsed and was rushed into hospital.

Darker skinned people are more likely to be vit d deficient and long term it can lead to bones softening and then eventually breaking. You can't refuse to believe in scientific fact!

I was diagnosed with a severe vitamin D deficiency after having my thyroid removed (hypothyroidism and vit D deficiency are strongly linked) - anything below 30 is diagnosed as a deficiency and my blood test showed my level to be 1.4.

I have to take 300,000iu injections in my backside 3 times a year (the maximum allowed amount) plus 10,000iu tablets daily and 50,000iu tablets weekly. Vitamin D deficiency is no joke or 'trend' and I actually think it's good that people are talking about it more these days and spreading awareness. As my doctor told me, living on low vitamin D is like trying to drive a car with no petrol in the tank.

The term narcissism is definitely overused on MN. As is autism, and before I get flamed, I am referring to threads where people talk about themselves/their partners doing/saying/acting in a certain way and someone pops up saying "is it possible you/he could be autistic?" . It's as if nobody can just be a certain way without having to have a diagnosis even if it's a pop psychology diagnosis on the internet.

Vit D is actually diagnosable via a blood test though and it's estimated that around 50% of people are vitamin D deficient. But everything should IMO be diagnosed professionally before people start throwing these terms around.

Vitamin D deficiency is real. I have to take multivitamins with it in plus an additional dose. The effect it has on my energy levels is honestly mind-blowing. If I forget to take it for a couple of days I notice a huge decrease in energy, constant fatigue etc.

It's not a fad if it's based on evidence, which it is. Hope that helps.

I have a Vit D deficiency. Waa diagnosed after years of ill health, mild depression etc.

My DM has has health problems all her life stemming from childhood rickets and then osteoarthritis. I wonder what was a big contributing factor in that? Yep, that's right..Vitamin D deficiency.

I do agree that there are fewer true narcs in rl than is represented on here. But that said, there are a good number of people who have narc traits.

I collapsed at home, and rushed to hospital where they found my blood count was 40, and I was very severely Anaemia, later diagnosed as Pernicious (Megaloblastic)

My Vit D deficiency is a knock on effect of that, as is my Iron Deficiency Anaemia and Underactive Thyroid
