To think that vitamin D Deficiency and narcissism fears are actually just fashions in medicine at the moment like flares or bootcut

I am just being astounded how many people seem to have their doctor thinking they are vitamin D deficient, and i"m sure everyone used to worry about this in the 70s.

I"be been saying i feel tired and minor depressed for ages but now the flap is all 'vitamin d', and similarly with narcissism...Someone disagrees..Narcissist, someone knows a subject better than you? Narc. Someone has nicer car...Narc... AIBU???

They say everyone has traits of narcissism in their personality (and many other traits), but to be a narcissist you have to have all the traits listed in the DSM (but I think they took NPD out of the DSM or were going to).

I totally get what you mean though. That word is thrown around so much these days! And people are quick to tell you to never speak to the person again.

scaryteacher · 10/04/2017 14:18

Had to have bloods done, and was severely deficient in Vitamin D. Now take a daily supplement, as Belgium is not renowned for its wall to wall sunshine.

pointythings · 10/04/2017 15:00

Narcissism is definitely overused. It's a lot more than being a bit selfish and nasty. My aunt is a narcissist. The list of stuff she has put her DD (my cousin) through would make your blood run cold.

Forgive us popping in - we just wanted to remind everyone that real life medical advice from professionals is always the best idea, if you have health concerns.

As you were....

AliceKlar · 10/04/2017 15:06

It's probably caused by a mixture of things, like our obsession with suncream, the English weather, staying indoors, and the lack of long hot summers that they apparently had decades ago

I was born in 1960 and seasons definitely seemed more 'defined'. Summers were more reliably summer-like and same with winter. There would often be snow on the ground for around 6 weeks at a time and far more precipitation too - remember my Dad and DB having to dig a few feet down to unearth the coal-store cupboard quite a few times. I have really noticed more of a blurring of seasons over the last 30 -40 years with warmer, greyer winters with a day or so of snow, and cooler summers with the occasional week or so of 'heatwaves' here and there.

Veterinari · 10/04/2017 15:08

Now the flap is all vitamin D

Never heard of rickets then OP? It's not exactly new

Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in the UK because of our northerly latitude. It's science.

Applebite · 10/04/2017 15:22

vitamin d deficiency is hardly a fad. amongst many other things you might want to know about your body, low vitamin d levels in expectant mothers have been linked to autism in recent research, might be something that some people wanted to have checked before conceiving.

the fact that doctors are now testing for more things in more sophisticated ways is a good thing. the fact that modern ways of life often mean being indoors all day and smothered in effective suntan lotion also has an effect.

PhilODox · 10/04/2017 15:29

People spend more time indoors now, and it's just been winter... why else would vitamin d deficiency be prevalent? You think it's a fashion thing? Hmm YABU

yerbutnobut · 10/04/2017 17:21

Not so much a trend but becoming aware through research and trials etc...like so many other things, not just vit D deficiency, don't think its a passing phase like certain types of trousers!

podrig · 10/04/2017 21:14

MN is way OTT on narcissism, gas lighting and far too quick to call everything abuse.

podrig · 10/04/2017 21:15

But d is do with actual science so no I'm not with you on that one

Rainydayspending · 10/04/2017 21:21

Vitamin d lotion and sunshine are used to treat my psoriasis. Keeping my vit D up does stop it appearing.
Narcissism is not a new psychological idea.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/04/2017 21:28

I too had "on trend" Vit D deficiency my ankles and fingers were so sore that I was tested for Rhumatoid Arthritis. I was lucky it was only Vit D and high doses cured the problem in a couple of weeks.

confusednorthner · 10/04/2017 21:30

I've been ill for 3 years, much worse over winter months and thought it was just getting old despite being less than 40. I had such bad muscle and bone pains I struggled to stand up from a chair along with a raft of other minor health niggles when I went to see gp as I couldn't lift anything on my right side. That wonderful lady immediately suspected vit d deficiency and tested my levels which were 7, now after huge initial doses, daily supplements and a weekly one I feel like a new woman! Definitely no fad as far as I'm concerned.

MrsWOLF1 · 10/04/2017 21:38

Diagnosed vitamin D deficiency ,sorry to disappoint

YABU, Vitamin D saved my sanity. I take 5000iu and I cannot explain to you what a massive difference it has made to my life.

Before taking them my joints were in constant pain, I used to shake my feet vigorously to help me fall asleep or scared to sit down for a long period because getting up was agony. My moods were low, I was waking up tired... it was truly awful.

Since taking Vitamin D, my joints no longer hurt, I am back to my happy self and I am raring to go at 5.30am.

Like a PP has said, I will continue to take them for the rest of my life and my only regret it that the 'Vitamin D hype' wasn't publicised earlier.

PossumInAPearTree · 10/04/2017 21:58

dd was diagnosed by the dr with vit d deficiency. She's like a different person since taking the tablets. The crushing muscle pain has stopped, better energy levels.

roywoodsbeard · 10/04/2017 21:59

I was diagnosed with severe vit d deficiency last year after months of pain in my wrist, elbow and shoulder. I had to sleep with shot water bottle to distract from the pain. Six weeks after starting a treatment dose of vitamin D my pain disappeared completely. A friend had a similar story but with back pain.

My GP told me that a lot of people have a milder deficiency due to pollution and indoor lifestyles.

GavelRavel · 10/04/2017 22:03

Yabvu about the vitamin Deficiency. There's a normal range in your bloodstream and a simple, black and white test shows if you're below that normal range. It's a vitamin which is needed by the body so having levels too low gives you a deficiency with physical effects.

notapizzaeater · 10/04/2017 22:07

What is the blood test for vit d ? DH is diabetic and has arthritis and is complaining like mad about how much he aches everywhere all the time ....

Myself I'm hypothyroid - didn't know there was a link

And ds is coeliac .... Think I'll get some vit d and supplement us all

originalbiglymavis · 10/04/2017 22:08

I know 2 people with bit d deficiency and according to them it can hurt like hell in the muscles and bones. One was thought to have cancer with the horrible symptoms (she turned out to have this too anyway) so it's not exactly a on a par with 'my psychic says that I'm a bit wheat intolerant, so can only eat kale when there's a Y in the month'.

GavelRavel · 10/04/2017 22:11

You have to ask the GP to request the test. I went to the GP after months of feeling ill, tired and so achey I couldn't sleep at night. i never go to the doctor but i eventually did because I actually thought I must have a serious illness. My levels were 10. I felt about a 1000 times better within a few weeks of the high dose injections.

IvorHughJarrs · 10/04/2017 22:19

I don't think Vit D deficiency is a myth but I don't see why people expect expensive testing and supplements on the NHS when you can buy supplements so cheaply. We know that we don't have much sun so why not just take them anyway?

originalbiglymavis · 10/04/2017 22:24

If you have horrendous aches and pains then you can't assume you know the cause.
