To think that vitamin D Deficiency and narcissism fears are actually just fashions in medicine at the moment like flares or bootcut

I am just being astounded how many people seem to have their doctor thinking they are vitamin D deficient, and i"m sure everyone used to worry about this in the 70s.

I"be been saying i feel tired and minor depressed for ages but now the flap is all 'vitamin d', and similarly with narcissism...Someone disagrees..Narcissist, someone knows a subject better than you? Narc. Someone has nicer car...Narc... AIBU???

OP posts:
BertsBlanket · 10/04/2017 13:34

You sound a bit irritable OP - have you had your vit D levels checked lately? Grin

Iamastonished · 10/04/2017 13:36

Wow. You are woefully ignorant about vitamin D deficiency Hmm. It isn't a trend. Medical science has made a lot of advances since the 1970s, but if you prefer to remain in a 1970s timewarp feel free to only take advantage of what was available back then when you need medical intervention.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 10/04/2017 13:37

No, they're not fads. I am heading for 50 and when I was at school I had one classmate who had asthma, nobody had autism and I'd never heard of anyone with a nut allergy, but life has changed and we're more educated and science and medical knowledge has moved on.
Nobody knew the sun could cause cancer for example, we thought 1000 calories a day was the best way to lose weight. People smoked happily while pregnant and abused children were routinely called liars.

Food has changed, lifestyles have changed (look at the growing rise of diabetes and the asthma I mentioned)

Finola1step · 10/04/2017 13:37

Oh and I agree with pp. A couple of days without my Vit D tabs and I start to feel it. For me, it starts in the joints and it is unmistakable. So no, it is not a fad and being diagnosed and treated has been life changing for me and others.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 10/04/2017 13:38

Sorry, of course there was autism, I mean being understood and diagnosed.

BloomingDaffodil · 10/04/2017 13:40

seem to have their doctor thinking they are vitamin D deficient

I don't think you can ''seem to have your doctor thinking'' - anything.

They are professionals you know. We don't diagnose ourselves

I was tested when it was noted that my spine was degenerating. Low vit D - it is very common, but I don't think it is a trend op

corythatwas · 10/04/2017 13:41

We were given Vitamin D drops as children in the 60s (northern location with little natural sunlight in winter), so people certainly knew about it. They were pink and went quite nicely with a glass of milk.

Perfectly good reasons why more people need them in the UK these days.

brasty · 10/04/2017 13:42

Yes, probably exaggerated. But people did spend more time outside in the 70s. So some truth in it too.

shovetheholly · 10/04/2017 13:42

You need to check out the work of Professor Michael Holick! He's done more than anyone to research vitamin D, which is part of the reason why more and more attention is being paid to it:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_F._Holick

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a Nobel at some point.

MichaelSheensNextDW · 10/04/2017 13:44

With regard to narcissistic personality disorder - we have a long history of culturally cold parenting in this country so it's unsurprising that NPD is 'a thing'. Of course a layperson cannot diagnose but it's extremely useful to have an awareness of the traits and behaviours for our own emotional safety.

KinkyAfro · 10/04/2017 13:45

I've just been told by my doc that I'm vit d deficient and will be on tablets for the rest of my life....why should I distrust that?

Werkzallhourz · 10/04/2017 13:46

Vit D deficiency is now more diagnosed because medical professionals are more aware of the problem. It's become one of the first tests they order if someone comes in with certain symptoms.

Ktown · 10/04/2017 13:48

I worked on a vit d trial 5 years ago and was surprised at how many people were seriously deficient.
People don't eat as much fish as in the past, and tend towards a poorer diet and indoors lifestyle so it isn't a surprise that lots of people lack vitamin d.
No idea about narcissism and gather it is just another name for extremely selfish types.

Ampersand22 · 10/04/2017 13:52

Narcissism is a personality disorder and behaviour goes way beyond the normal selfishness of ordinary people.

FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies · 10/04/2017 13:52

Well, I eat lots of fish and am an outdoors sort of person (love gardening and have a dog to walk). I was still very very Vit D deficient.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/04/2017 13:55

I've been feeling crushingly exhausted and run down with constant headaches and numerous other issues

Turns out I'm severely vit d deficient.

Not made up shit here

BluePeppersAndBroccoli · 10/04/2017 14:00

A lot f recent studies have shown that most of us are deficient in vitamin D nowdays.
It's a mix of not being indoors as much and always using sun cream added to the fact there just isn't a lot of sun.

If the people yu are talking about having been prescribed vitD by their GP, it means that their blood test shows they are deficient. So why the Hmm??

itsonlysubterfuge · 10/04/2017 14:01

I get where the OP is coming from.

When I was a child it seemed everyone left and right was being diagnosed with ADHD and ADD.

Now there are so many children with AS and almost every adult I know has IBS Confused.

I'm not sure if it's because the testing is better and it's more widely known, so people who have the problems are getting treatment or if it's a case of it's getting so much exposure at the minute and you might have it, so you get the diagnosis of it.

For example with IBS, my FIL started having stomach pains and bowel problems so the GP said he had IBS. We later found out that it was most likely cancer that was causing his symptoms. I felt so upset at the time because I didn't believe he had IBS because I knew him more than the doctor and didn't think his symptoms matched, I told him so, but he wanted to believe the GP. FYI this same GP also diagnosed me and my DH with IBS as well.

Annahibiscuits · 10/04/2017 14:04

Vitamin D deficiency is not a fad. It's a pandemic across northern Europe. Because we don't get enough exposure to sunlight, these days. Vitamin D is made in your skin in sunlight. Darker skinned people produce it less readily. It's diagnosed with a blood test and is very debilitating.

I don't understand the connection to NPD Confused

TheBookIsOnTheTable · 10/04/2017 14:08

I don't understand the connection to NPD

Me either. Kind of a bizarre OP. Vitamin D deficiency is easily measurable - it's a well-known fact that most people don't get enough and has been for a long time.

The other is a random term that people like to throw about online.

LorLorr2 · 10/04/2017 14:09

Vit D deficiency may well be a trend, but it's not a 'fashion' as in one that people make up, it's scientifically proved by many people having tests done and the result they get back.

It's probably caused by a mixture of things, like our obsession with suncream, the English weather, staying indoors, and the lack of long hot summers that they apparently had decades ago.

RockNRollNerd · 10/04/2017 14:09

Re nut allergy they are the only small food with a choking warning on them. Raisins etc and other tiny things including sweets never have them even though they may be similar size and just as much of a risk. I had a long conversation at allergy clinic once with the doc about how we both suspect very very few, if any, children ever choked on nuts but enough of them in days of yore must have eaten them, gone blue in the face and stopped breathing for people to surmise they had choked when in fact they had gone into anaphylaxis. The incidence is on the increase now but it's highly unlikely no one was ever allergic to them until recently just those poor sods who died didn't have it attributed to allergy

dodobookends · 10/04/2017 14:13

Vitamin D deficiency has been well-documented for years, and my dd takes supplements as she is a dancer. Those in the performing arts who spend their daylight hours in the rehearsal studio or on stage are frequently deficient.

Narcissism - been around a long time but only now do more people recognise it for what it is.

LynetteScavo · 10/04/2017 14:16

I think things are just talked about more, are better under stood and treatments are more advanced

When I was a child there seemed to be a lot of women suffering from "bad nerves". There was a "naughty" boy in nearly every class. And the average white person got enough vitamin D from walking to school/work the shops during the summer months.

Narcissist seems to be a term thrown around on the internet. I've never actually heard it used in RL.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 10/04/2017 14:18

It was me who mentioned nut allergy RockNRollNerd we were actually sold salads in our school canteen and they always had a handful of peanuts on the plate, that would never happen now.

My point was that although things have always existed we are so much more aware now. You may be right when you say people thought it was choking on nuts that killed rather than allergy.

That makes me wonder how far advances will go and what will be found out in the next few years. When you think smoking was advised for breathing problems once the mind boggles.
