Yes. I love The Beatles. They were amazing. There music has stood the test of time.

My mum is from Liverpool. I live near Liverpool. The Beatles are ingrained in my growing up. What did John Hannah say on Sliding Doors - The should be called The Featuls.

Blah blah blah.

This incessant celebrating EVERY anniversary of EVERYTHING they have EVER done needs to stop.

Now it's 50 years since Sgt Pepper album.

We've had the anniversary of the first time they played at the Cavern, the anniversary of john lennons death, the anniversary of the first time ringo farted, the anniversary of the release of white revolver, the anniversary of the day they returned to play in the cavern, the anniversary of the release of hard days night.........It's endless.

Am I being a misbag, or is it ridiculous? I will state again, I am aware of their cultural influence and love their music.

YANBU but to be fair it's probably much more amplified in your area and not as evident elsewhere unless you're a mega fan who goes hunting/follows their work.

Personally, i'm not a fan. My Gran listened to them a lot when i was growing up and i just don't get their sound but it's all about individual perspective.

I'm a MASSIVE Queen fan and i wasn't born when they were touring/releasing music so i follow them and enjoy joining in with the anniversaries when/where i can but i know that a lot of people don't get them.

I'm originally from the Liverpool area, I've never got the impression that you're not allowed to not like The Beatles. I think you'll find it's pretty much 50/50 on weather people like them or not.

I found that the locals get more annoyed by the tourists associating Liverpool in general as just being about The Beatles when locals know there's so much more to the city and surrounding areas then one band.

But YABU they are one of the biggest bands in the world weather you like it or not or don't like them. Of course you'll always get things bring celebrated about them in their hometown, it encourages tourism to the area which in turn creates jobs and brings in money. I would have thought that was a good thing?

Plus I love The Beatles so I'm probably slightly bias Wink

I think that when The Beatles are considered, you have to take account of the huge influence George Martin and Brian Epstein had in moulding what they became. They are, perhaps more interesting because of how they set a template for successful recording and marketing which influenced the way acts were dealt with in the industry. The influence isn't just about the music they composed. They are a bit like ABBA, who demanded a lot from their studio engineers, who in turn introduced many new ideas about how songs could be recorded, which have influenced how things are done today.

The OP asks if the many anniversary celebrations of related Beatles events is too much. I'll stick to this point as debate on how good they were, what you like and don't like about them, the general opinion on Paul' s dyed hair etc may lead to digression. And don't forget, the OP did say they "loved" them and they were "brilliant". Putting the actual Beatles aside for one moment, should ANYTHING or ANYONE who has an enduring global popularity of monumental proportions have regular anniversary celebrations? I think so. If there is a fan base out there in the millions who want to hear about them, if there are thousands upon thousands of official and unofficial clubs, web sites etc, with millions of interested members and visitors from all around the world, then why not? As annoying as it is to some, and unwarranted as it is to others, there are a LOT, and I mean a LOT of people on the earth who still want to hear about and celebrate all things Beatle.
Just do a quick web browser search on "beatles enduring popularity". There are people who have written at length on this phenomenon and put it into better words than I ever could.

One of the problems could be that people listen to stuff on iphones or laptops.
LedZeppelin doesn't translate well to rubbish sound systems

In the early 70s the introduction to Hawkwind's Silver Machine just blew my mind.
Oh dear, on youtube it's not quite the same

YANBU. Nothing wrong with liking a band or singer, but when it all gets a bit fanatical with people who own all the memorabilia and the constant anniversaries and documentaries I find it baffling. Feel much the same about Elvis. Some good songs yes but...They're songs. Why the endless obsessing?

BlueHerring · 10/04/2017 16:01

The endless obsessing comes about from so many people, worldwide, wanting to endlessly obsess about them. It is like a supply and demand situation. If all you millions of people want to obsess about the Beatles, then here you go - we'll feed the beast and give you what you want. No other act in the history of popular music has been obsessed about by so many on the same scale as the Beatles. Whether you are one of these people or not it's a fact. If they really had just been a band with "some good songs", and not also have had the massive cultural influence they did, then maybe it would not be the case. But they did and it is.

It annoys me too.

It reminds me of how every single year there is a different commemoration for the end of a certain war, or the beginning, or the middle, or the anniversary of VE day, or VJ day, or the battle of Britain, or the Battle of the Somme, or the Battle of the Bulge, or Operation Overlord, or something.

There seems to be something every single year. I know war was a big thing, and many brave men were lost, but I just find it weird how there is something every year that we have to commemorate about a certain war or battle. Confused
