Yes. I love The Beatles. They were amazing. There music has stood the test of time.

My mum is from Liverpool. I live near Liverpool. The Beatles are ingrained in my growing up. What did John Hannah say on Sliding Doors - The should be called The Featuls.

Blah blah blah.

This incessant celebrating EVERY anniversary of EVERYTHING they have EVER done needs to stop.

Now it's 50 years since Sgt Pepper album.

We've had the anniversary of the first time they played at the Cavern, the anniversary of john lennons death, the anniversary of the first time ringo farted, the anniversary of the release of white revolver, the anniversary of the day they returned to play in the cavern, the anniversary of the release of hard days night.........It's endless.

Am I being a misbag, or is it ridiculous? I will state again, I am aware of their cultural influence and love their music.

"I love Listen Without Prejudice. Such a great album. He had an amazing control of his voice"

That's not even close to the best album on that score - try "songs from the last century" especially "the first time ever I saw your face" Wink

GloriaV · 08/04/2017 18:20

They were brilliant really but unfortunately their music has been played to death so no one can appreciate it properly now.

The reason they are brought up every so often is due to the age of their original fans - they will be reaching their 70s so want to relive their past.

A bit like the punk revival that is going on Yawn- that's because their fans are hitting 60. So suddenly want to remember their youth and pass the amazing bands (hmm) to their grandchildren.

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 18:21

People are entitled to say they don't like the Beatles but comments like "they were a manufactured boy band" or "they ruined music and added nothing" are so laughable as to be not taken serious. As this article shows they not only changed music as we knew it but still do to this day. They were ahead of their time by years. Imo none of today's bands come near.

I've met George and ringo they were lovely polite, quiet people.

I went off Ringo with all that 'I'm no longer signing autographs' malarkey (peace and love)

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you

Charitygirl1 · 08/04/2017 19:36

Oh I am cringing for the person who said they were 'skiffle/rockabilly'. Just no.

The Beatles don't really mean anything to me but to say they're crap is just churlish and childish.

pennypickle · 08/04/2017 19:41

I have great respect for The Beatles for being the first band to introduce 'pop'. I have never bought any of their songs though. Shoot me! :D

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 19:49

I agree with you, it's fair enough if people don't like them but to describe the Beatles as crap is showing an awful lot of ignorance as well as being churlish and childish. Their massive talent for creating music that still influences musicians today can never be described as "crap".

Destinysdaughter · 08/04/2017 19:51

Essentially both the Beatles and Elvis created modern pop music by using black music and making it 'white', thus creating mass appeal. To criticise either of these artists just shows a profound ignorance of the history of pop music. So many of the artists pp love today probably wouldn't have existed without these artists.

You might as well say Chuck Berry sounds 'dated'...

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 19:52

Keiran i went off Ringo for that too. They always say Ringo was the beatle who got "lucky".

flippinada · 08/04/2017 20:00

Fair enough to not like them but the comments dismissing then as just a boyband etc are just ridiculous (and I'm not particularly a fan).

Whether you like their music or not, they were a cultural phenomenon and hugely influential. They created some amazing music - as well as some ok stuff and some utter shite.

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 20:21

But they did start as a skiffle group, so it's not exactly childish, churlish or anything else to point this out. Or have many forgotten how they started out?

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 21:42

A lot of bands, even the ones around at the same time as The Beatles, do not credit them with their success, nor should they if they weren't directly influenced by them.

As for the Stones owing their success to the Beatles? Grin If they hadn't appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, there's nothing to say the Stones wouldn't have been the catalyst for the British Invasion etc. It had very little to do with talent and much more to do with being in the right place at the right time, and any band with a shred of sense will admit that. The 60s were a time when just about anyone could become famous, as the establishment of the previous generation had been done away with.

There's absolutely nothing to suggest music wouldn't have gone down the same path if the Beatles hadn't existed.

TheCrystalMaise · 08/04/2017 22:02

I can't think of many artists and bands who haven't been influenced by them

This is what it don't understand , which artists have been influenced by them?? How can you tell?

Graphista · 08/04/2017 22:10

"Essentially both the Beatles and Elvis created modern pop music by using black music and making it 'white', thus creating mass appeal"

Ahem Bill Haley - rock n roll hits before Elvis!

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 22:12

Ahem Bill Haley - rock n roll hits before Elvis!

Both of them were nobs and the total antithesis of rock and roll.

They were just the best we had until something a fuck ton better came along. Grin

Graphista · 08/04/2017 22:20

How they were as people and their influence as artists is separate.

Bill Haley while a belligerent drunk and philanderer, did sing the first 2 big rock n roll hits by a white artist, that's huge!

I am not a fan of Elvis personally or musically but he did massively contribute to the change in popular music.

Graphista · 08/04/2017 22:21

Not sure how they're 'the antithesis of rock n roll' given rock n roll is all about rebellion, challenging authority etc

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 22:27

Not sure how they're 'the antithesis of rock n roll' given rock n roll is all about rebellion, challenging authority etc

And neither Elvis nor Bill Haley were about that.

Elvis did a complete 180 when he started losing purchase with the younger generation. Got on the anti-drug bandwagon, started living in the pockets of the politicians etc. Got fat and uncool very quickly.

Bill Haley:

  • "You only need a couple of teenagers to give the whole lot a bad name. And it all goes back to the parents."
  • Thought that teenage rebellion was simply "rioting"
  • Insisted that people should adhere to the 50s dogma of marriage, children, stable life
dudsville · 08/04/2017 22:30

I liked then when I was 13-16 years old in the 80s. As far as I'm concerned it's all really tired now.

Graphista · 08/04/2017 22:32

That's what they said - their actions were otherwise

Elvis addicted to food, alcohol & prescription drugs

Bill Haley multiple marriages, kids he may even not have known he had

Surely such personal hypocrisy is the definition of rebellion Grin

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 08/04/2017 22:38

Within a 10 year span, the evolution of the music of the Beatles from their start in skiffle, through conventional early 60s pop, to experimenting with a variety of styles including Indian music and orchestral styles was pretty impressive. Particularly as they came from working class backgrounds with little musical training.

Love them or loathe them, they certainty were influential and a lot of 90s music reprised their sound.

Personally I love them. My Great Grandma who was middle-aged during the 60s quite liked them. My Grandma was the right demographic and loved them. My mother, I'm not so sure on, but it was the soundtrack of her childhood. I grew up with their music still being played around me, and now I find myself playing their music to my young DCs. They're quite partial to a bit of Yellow Submarine, but there's plenty of time for them to develop more sophisticated tastes Wink

Their music isn't symbolic of a moment, it was a rapidly changing era and they kept pace with it and stayed at the forefront. There were many other great bands of the time with music that has endured well. Meanwhile other music of the era has dated heavily and slides gently into obscurity.

The fact that we're having a lively discussion about the merits (or lack of) of their music 50+ years on is a sign that that they were beyond the ordinary.

(I've never been to Liverpool so don't have to hear constant minor anniversaries)

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 08/04/2017 22:41

The Beatles made over rated mediocre music. The band is made up of mainly total wankers. YANBU.

bionicant · 08/04/2017 22:43

lots of bands were influenced by the, esp american west coast bands of the same era

ok so you've had enough of them but they were still an major impact on all music and their music has pretty must stood the test of time.

meh i can't get why people like ant n dec - horses for courses

aquashiv · 08/04/2017 22:48

Prefer the Rolling Stones.

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 22:50

cherry Would you like to tell us who you think has made a massive contribution to the music we enjoy today. Preferably ones who aren't wankers?
