Yes. I love The Beatles. They were amazing. There music has stood the test of time.

My mum is from Liverpool. I live near Liverpool. The Beatles are ingrained in my growing up. What did John Hannah say on Sliding Doors - The should be called The Featuls.

Blah blah blah.

This incessant celebrating EVERY anniversary of EVERYTHING they have EVER done needs to stop.

Now it's 50 years since Sgt Pepper album.

We've had the anniversary of the first time they played at the Cavern, the anniversary of john lennons death, the anniversary of the first time ringo farted, the anniversary of the release of white revolver, the anniversary of the day they returned to play in the cavern, the anniversary of the release of hard days night.........It's endless.

Am I being a misbag, or is it ridiculous? I will state again, I am aware of their cultural influence and love their music.

Can't remember the last time I heard a Beatles song or anything about them. It must be a local thing, you need to just ignore.

ijustwannadance · 08/04/2017 11:54

I hate them. Worked by Matthew Street for years when I was younger. It's just constant.

Brings a lot of money to the city though.

Addley · 08/04/2017 12:06

I love the Beatles but Hey Jude may be one of their worst songs. Stretch out the nananananaaaas long enough and I start to chew my own ears off. It's embarrassing.

PsychedelicSheep · 08/04/2017 12:08

'Twee jangly shite'

For the most part yes exactly this. Never saw what all the fuss was about, my dear old nan thought Lennon was Godlike though, and we're from the South!

He was a miserable, wife beating tosser.

Give me Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones any day 😍

Runny · 08/04/2017 12:13

See I think the Stones are crap and that Mick Jagger is a shrivelled up old sleazebag.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose. Music is subjective.

YokoReturns · 08/04/2017 12:21

They're not a bloody rockabilly or skiffle band, though, are they?! That's the whole point! They were a departure from all that. And they assimilated thousands of styles into their music.

I wish people wouldn't be so reductive.

As for The Stones, they owe The Beatles their career. They're also quite a different band, more blues-focused initially, although they incorporated reggae/funk later on.

Wateroffaduck · 08/04/2017 12:32

I like the Beatles music, it has stood the test of time, but I live near Liverpool and it is the over kill that makes you start to hate them. I can't watch the local news anymore as there is nearly always a Beatles story about them, every day. Like OP said, anniversarys, birthdays etc, it is endless. There was a major story a few months ago about a trust trying to buy Ringo Starrs old family home when he was a kid and might have learnt to play the drums there, it went on for days.

Now if I have the local news on and I hear The Beatles I groan inwards and think, isn't there anything more current you can talk about?

Destinysdaughter · 08/04/2017 12:39

I love the Beatles but guess if you live in Liverpool it must grate a bit!

CactusFred · 08/04/2017 12:42

I agree but probably because they bore me stupid anyway and if I see Paul McCartney at one more thing on tv I'm throwing something at him. Cannot stand the man!

TheRattleBag · 08/04/2017 12:49

For anyone thinking that the Beatles weren't that great, musically speaking, check out the programme that Howard Goodall did about them - it analyses why they were so groundbreaking in a lot of what they did. Even for a non-fan, it's a fascinating watch:

TheRattleBag · 08/04/2017 12:50

But I agree that Paul McCartney should stop trying to sing now!

Dannythechampion · 08/04/2017 12:59

Think the dismissals of the Beatles as "twee twangly shite" or "boybands" are not just subjective dismissals, but ones which are based on ignorance.

The anniversary things are rolled out by record companies, book publishers etc cause they are easy to exploit for profit. Selling the record again generates huge income for the company, and actually not as much for the artists or their families due to the deals that they signed as very young men.

As for the Olympics? Yes the performance wasn't great, but we had pulled out a whole load of other great Brits, had there been no Beatles input people would have complained.

Boy Band? Twee Twangly shite?

Poppycock

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2017 13:02

So much more to Liverpool thAn just the Beatles. No one has heard of the Spinners. 🙁

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 13:07

But by definition boy bands are described as
a pop group composed of attractive young men, whose music and image are designed to appeal primarily to a young teenage audience.
So what part doesnt make them a boy band?

BeALert · 08/04/2017 13:07

This thread has reminded me how much I love the Beatles.

I'm off to iTunes to download their stuff.

Ta.

Dannythechampion · 08/04/2017 13:13

What part doesn't make them a boy band?

Well, the fact that using this term is an attempt to dismiss the Beatles by lumping them in with Boyzone, One Direction, Bros, Take That and New Kids on The Block.

Using the definition they are one, but its incorrect to put the Beatles in with the others that are classified as such.

kittytom · 08/04/2017 13:19

I went to university in Liverpool and yes it is a very Beatly there. (I used to enjoy waving to the magical mystery tour bus!)

I haven't noticed anything like this since moving back down south 15 years ago.

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 13:25

but 'boy bands' predate even the Beatles. So we should declassify all of those to not put them in the same league as boyzone etc?

OvO · 08/04/2017 13:28

I like the Beatles but have a love/hate thing going on as I can listen to any of their songs without my DH giving me a bloody history lesson on each bastarding song.

He knows aaaaall the anniversaries and likes to talk at length. He's a massive fan. He'd love to live in Liverpool. Anyone fancy a houseswap? Grin

Every so often he does a day trip to Liverpool to do all the Beatles sights. From Edinburgh. Edinburgh!

Dannythechampion · 08/04/2017 13:32

To refer to them as a boyband is an attempt to dismiss them as musically insignificant and mainly image based. Which they weren't.

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 13:39

So if not image based then why did their manager put their look and persona together?

Dannythechampion · 08/04/2017 13:43

The image was part of it, not all of it.

We won't be listening to one direction in 20 years time.

We don't listen to New Kids on the Block now.

We listen to Take That because women of a certain age like to relive their youth.

The Beatles are different.

JacquesHammer · 08/04/2017 13:45

I never understand why a dislike of The Beatles is always met with people saying "oh it's because you haven't listed to enough" or trying to change your mind

I wonder why not liking the Beatles is so controversial

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 13:52

Image is part of it for other boybands. Not all are defined solely by image.

Dannythechampion · 08/04/2017 13:55

But when people describe the beatles as a "boyband" it is to dismiss them as being entirely image based.

Which for a band of the time they were not, in fact they were quite rare in writing their own tracks, especially for a new group to have their fist single released that they had written themselves.
