Yes. I love The Beatles. They were amazing. There music has stood the test of time.

My mum is from Liverpool. I live near Liverpool. The Beatles are ingrained in my growing up. What did John Hannah say on Sliding Doors - The should be called The Featuls.

Blah blah blah.

This incessant celebrating EVERY anniversary of EVERYTHING they have EVER done needs to stop.

Now it's 50 years since Sgt Pepper album.

We've had the anniversary of the first time they played at the Cavern, the anniversary of john lennons death, the anniversary of the first time ringo farted, the anniversary of the release of white revolver, the anniversary of the day they returned to play in the cavern, the anniversary of the release of hard days night.........It's endless.

Am I being a misbag, or is it ridiculous? I will state again, I am aware of their cultural influence and love their music.

Christ, unbelievable amounts of opinion based on 'love love me do' type tracks. A few listens to Abbey Road, Revolver etc and those tracks are exceptional. Just one of the songs on there is another bands 'career masterpiece'.

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 23:17

lots of bands were influenced by the, esp american west coast bands of the same era

Such as?

The Mamas & The Papas, The Doors, Janis Joplin? Wouldn't say any of them are reminiscent of the Beatles.

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 23:24

Prefer the Rolling Stones.
I preferred the Kinks but i still can't deny the Beatles were more talented and made a bigger impact on music than any other group of that era.

bionicant · 08/04/2017 23:27

they influenced bands like the birds, jefferson airplane, buffalo springfield who without them would be no crosby, stills, nash, then eagles, fleetwood mac etc.

it's historical fact

bionicant · 08/04/2017 23:28

sorry byrds Grin as in beatles

gillybeanz · 08/04/2017 23:31

I find the hype behind The Beatles really funny.
A generation were conned the same as now, ut for different reasons.
Do people believe they were responsible for their success?
That Lennon and McCartney did more than write a few simple phrases and that half the pop scene at the time added bits here and there.
They started off as a lttle bit of a club band and were then manufactured.

Like them and idolise them as much as you want to, but come on they were no better than any other boy band that have been.
They and the youth of the day were guinea pigs, as are the youth of today. They don't realise that the bands and Artists of today sometimes can't sing within a tone of the right melody Sad

Does anyone believe the theory that PM died in 1966 anyway?
I don't usually go for theories as I don't like being told what to believe, so I keep an open mind.

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 23:39

Says who? Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were around at the same time as those others btw. The Byrds were primarily inspired by the beatnik movement of the 50s, more than they were inspired by the music of the Beatles.

Never once heard Fleetwood Mac refer to The Beatles, but Stevie Nicks has mentioned time and again that she was influenced by Janis Joplin.

Jefferson Airplane were more likely influenced by bands like The Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead. They were all running in the same circles, and were likely feeding off each others' influence.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 08/04/2017 23:42

rosethyme they haven't influenced any of the music that I enjoy. Or are you suggesting that every artist in the world has been influenced by the Beatles?

bionicant · 08/04/2017 23:46

says Johnny Rogan writer of Timeless Flight amongst others, it's very well documented.

the whole time, influences etc is just very clear, the beatles influences is just fact.

jefferson airplane are a folk group def not influenced by the stones. lots of written articles/book out there prove this

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 23:46

I suppose that the Beatles also influenced Jefferson airplane to do the roof top thing?

YokoReturns · 09/04/2017 07:11

I love Tamla Motown, Soul, Funk, Reggae, Electro, hip-hop, '60s pop '80s pop, Britpop, house, New Wave and myriad other popular genres.

It is still an incontrovertible fact that The Beatles are perhaps the most influential band of all time, in that most bands will have listened to them at one point or other, and they blazed a trail in terms of fusing popular styles and world music/classical music.

I am yet to see a shred of evidence on this thread that effectively refutes the above statement.

YokoReturns · 09/04/2017 07:19

NB it's also possible to be 'negatively' influential I.e. 'I sure as hell don't want to sound like The Beatles'. It's still influence.

When I was studying ethnomusicology, we had to read a book by Mantle Hood (who brought Gamelan music to the wider consciousness). He 'dissed' The Beatles in his foreword and basically said it was a flash in the pan. We found a later edition of the book where he retracted his criticism as he'd realised that pop music was now in the fabric of Western societies.

DonaldStott · 09/04/2017 08:16

Does anyone believe the theory that PM died in 1966 anyway?

Well I heard about this a while back, so I investigated. Hilarious. I have watched an awful 'documentary' about it and read endless articles as I just couldn't believe it.

Gave me a few laughs at how mental the theories etc were, but also a bit creepy.

rosethyme · 09/04/2017 09:04

cherry no i didn't suggest they influenced all music, where did i say that?

GloriaV · 09/04/2017 09:05

So there was False News in 1966?

makeourfuture · 09/04/2017 09:07

Bob Dylan

Whisky2014 · 09/04/2017 09:09

Yes OP totally agree. And actually I think they were overrated and take more credit than is due. I love Buddy Holly :)

rosethyme · 09/04/2017 09:16

I thought Buddy Holly was overrated.

CoteDAzur · 09/04/2017 09:28

Beatles had simple, catchy tunes which were very popular then and are still somewhat popular now, as simple catchy tunes tend to be. Yes, they were influential and did experiment a little later in their career, but Bach and Handel they certainly were not.

I loved Beatles as a teenager, and was strumming their songs on my guitar one simple chord after another & singing along, but moved among to richer, deeper, more complex, darker stuff as years went by.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 09/04/2017 09:36

rosethyme you asked Would you like to tell us who you think has made a massive contribution to the music we enjoy today. Preferably ones who aren't wankers? which I believe implied that you think the Beatles influenced a lot of artists?

I don't really care who's influenced by who. I think their music is mediocre and as people they're mostly wankers not very nice (that may not be an issue for some in enjoyment of their music but it is for me). Not to my taste at all, but seeing as you asked prefer the likes of Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance.

SuperBeagle · 09/04/2017 09:57

I vastly prefer the Stones, and think that they were actually as innovative and influential as The Beatles, but my favourite is Led Zeppelin. Their influence is often underrated, though they're not underrated as a band.

rosethyme · 09/04/2017 10:11

Thanks cherry never heard of them but i'm sure they're ok.As for them being "wankers", not really relevant when talking about their contribution to music.

MoonriseKingdom · 09/04/2017 10:29

If we only listened to the music of certified non wankers the airwaves would be much quieter.

Epipgab · 09/04/2017 11:07

Yes Moonrise. People who have made the best contributions to art/music etc. can have any personality. There have been many classical composers who might not be defined as "nice" or with views we would necessarily agree with. However, no-one says Beethoven or Wagner weren't influential!

JacquesHammer · 09/04/2017 11:09

SuperBeagle totally agree re: Led Zeppelin
