Yes. I love The Beatles. They were amazing. There music has stood the test of time.

My mum is from Liverpool. I live near Liverpool. The Beatles are ingrained in my growing up. What did John Hannah say on Sliding Doors - The should be called The Featuls.

Blah blah blah.

This incessant celebrating EVERY anniversary of EVERYTHING they have EVER done needs to stop.

Now it's 50 years since Sgt Pepper album.

We've had the anniversary of the first time they played at the Cavern, the anniversary of john lennons death, the anniversary of the first time ringo farted, the anniversary of the release of white revolver, the anniversary of the day they returned to play in the cavern, the anniversary of the release of hard days night.........It's endless.

Am I being a misbag, or is it ridiculous? I will state again, I am aware of their cultural influence and love their music.

When people say they don't like the Beatles, that's normally because they've not heard their more interesting stuff. They truly were groundbreaking, Tomorrow never knows was one of the first (if not the first) commercially released piece of music to use sampling, basically the first ever dance track.
Paul McCartney was in his day a genuine musical genius. Listen to the nostalgia he captures in Penny Lane.

I can't believe people can listen to the White Album or Abbey Road and not find anything on there that speaks to them. Abbey Road is pretty much a perfect album IMO.

motherofdaemons

It's no different from someone saying they don't like the Stones, or the Clash, or the Who, or (insert any other groundbreaking band here). Different strokes for different folks.

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 09:51

I don't think the Beatles could ever be described as "just a boy band" putting them on a par with bands like Boyzone, Westlife, One Direction etc. For a start they didn't rely on other people's music, everything they sang was what they wrote.

I can't think of a boy band today who could equal what they achieved. Saying that i'm not a Beatles fan but there are a few of their songs which i love, i think it'd be hard to dislike all of them because they're so diverse. I love "In my life", "All you need is love" "And i love her" to name a few off the top of my head.

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 09:55

everything they sang was what they wrote.

Nah, they ripped of black blues artists just as much as the rest of them. Grin

Thinkingblonde · 08/04/2017 10:06

I don't get the hype either and I am old enough to have see them play live.
I never did like Jojn Lennon, he was cynical, sardonic and a neglectful parent towards his eldest son. How must that boy have felt knowing that the song My Beautiful Boy was written by Lennon for the son he had with Yoko Ono.
Don't even get me started on
Saint Paul of M'Cartney.

rosethyme · 08/04/2017 10:08

When i say everything they sang was what they wrote i mean they didn't do covers. Obviously they were influenced by certain sounds as most song writers were.

Runny · 08/04/2017 10:14

They did do covers. Twist and Shout is a cover, and their early albums had covers on them.

PutThatPomBearBack · 08/04/2017 10:39

Can you imagine the current generation never letting go of one direction or Nicki Minaj? Hahahaa

Destinysdaughter · 08/04/2017 10:45

I do wonder how the trajectory of pop music would have gone without them, as they were so influential.

Think on that, Beatles Haters!

MrsJayy · 08/04/2017 10:47

Gary Barlow wrote take that songs just a boyband now manband Beatles were just Take That of their day btw nothing wrong with that it sells songs buys hooge houses and gets fans,

TheCrystalMaise · 08/04/2017 10:51

I agree with workshyfop, twee jangly shite.

I hate hey Jude with a passion, have to leave the room / switch over whenever it comes on.

SuperBeagle · 08/04/2017 10:59

Destiny The Stones were knocking about at the same time, so probably would've ended up in much the same direction.

theduchessstill · 08/04/2017 11:02

Sorry but it's ridiculous to compare them to Take That just because Gary Barlow wrote their songs. Yes he did, but the diversity and range of The Beatles' output is in no way matched by Take That. Take That just did pop songs and that is not the case for The Beatles.

I have never liked Paul McCartney but some of his stuff he did with the band was great. No need for all the anniversaries; the music will live on without them.

Grilledaubergines · 08/04/2017 11:07

On from 'down South' so no idea of the annoyance you feel OP. But I love the Beatles and loved (well the twice I visited) Liverpool. And I love any reason to celebrate so I'm saying YABU. Though I appreciate YANBU since you live with it and it annoys you.

Grilledaubergines · 08/04/2017 11:07

*I'm

JacquesHammer · 08/04/2017 11:09

YANBU - I don't think they were even brilliant. Massively overrated for me

Theresnonamesleft · 08/04/2017 11:10

Haha they didn't do covers. They did 172 covers.

TheDowagerCuntess · 08/04/2017 11:10

I'm not a massive fan...

But I think their music is so well known that it tipped over into utterly familiar territory, to the extent that people don't quite appreciate how ground-breaking and truly original it was at the time.

TheElephantofSurprise · 08/04/2017 11:11

They weren't brilliant. They were a rockabilly band. Skiffle, even. They were just new at the time. They had some ok songs, especially McCartney ones, but they weren't all that.

Blossomdeary · 08/04/2017 11:12

I was around when they first emerged and it is only by being there that you realise what a huge departure they were from what had gone before: Petula Clark, Johnny Mathis, Bing Crosby, Elvis. Tommy Steele et al.

I am not aware of any Beatles anniversary celebrations - they seem to have passed me by!

SoulAccount · 08/04/2017 11:17

YABU because clearly there is an interest and enthusiasm from other people and you are not the boss of them.

Whether or not anyone likes the music it is ignorant to discount the effect they had not only on the evolution of music but also culturally and socially.

The Beatles are a lifelong hobby and interest for millions around the world. What harm does that do you?

seasontotaste · 08/04/2017 11:21

Oh, the Beatless. I thought this was going to be about Yes. I'll get my coat.

DingDongtheWitchIsDangDiddlyDe · 08/04/2017 11:23

It's just for the tourists. Stop paying attention. Or move!

LucilleBluth · 08/04/2017 11:38

Oh, that picture made me laugh more than it should have. I'm from Manchester and they are in my DNA, I know all the songs because my mum loved them, but I just can't listen to them now. I can listen to the Stones, Dylan, Cohen, Mitchell et al.....but not the Beatles. I'm not sure why.

Oldraver · 08/04/2017 11:43

I've never really liked them or the way thye get shoved down you throat and their saintliness.

Just Googled pics of PM and I thought I was looking at Cilla...
