Pronounced cal-y-oh-pee

Is it awful?

OP posts:
TeslasDeathRay · 05/04/2017 18:29

It's one of my favourite names, but I don't think I'd ever use it.
I'd imagine you'll have a lot of people pronouncing it "Callie-opey".

SomeDyke · 05/04/2017 18:30

I think Calliope is an okay name. But shame the other Muses don't get as much attention.

Terpsichore or Urania (dance and astronomy) -- can't see those taking off though! But at least they've not been used for anything else like a musical instrument AFAIK. And why name a steam organ after the muse of epic poetry????

Topseyt · 05/04/2017 18:31

I don't like it personally.

I think the child will end up spending most of their life explaining and spelling it. It would irk me.

rosethyme · 05/04/2017 18:37

My friend has a name that she hates because all her life she has had to spell it out and explain the pronunciation, she always wonders why her parents had to make her life so awkward.

smilingsarahb · 05/04/2017 18:39

I thought it was cal eye oh pee , so I think people might say it wrong. But you can just correct them.

Goldfishjane · 05/04/2017 18:39

I love it but I work with one
Also, Grey's Anatomy Grin

Also, I have a forrin name because my folks are forrin. It is annoying getting people to learn your name but you can get that with Helene or Mairi or Aiofe etc

Janey50 · 05/04/2017 18:40

Makes me think of a type of melon. Sorry!

emwithme · 05/04/2017 18:40

As long as your surname isn't O'Malley yes, I'm another Grey's Anatomy fan then it's fine.

bookworm14 · 05/04/2017 18:42

It's a very pretty name but I fear a lot of people will pronounce it 'cally-ope'.

I love Persephone, which has similar pronunciation issues.

TwattyMcTwatface · 05/04/2017 18:43

It would make me think of the organ - but crack on: if you like the name, why are you bothered about the opinions of strangers anyway?

SpikeWithoutASoul · 05/04/2017 18:43

I was talked out of Persephone for DD on the basis that everyone would pronounce it Percy-phone. I really wish I'd stuck to my guns, so if you love it: go for it!

ShoutOutToMyEx · 05/04/2017 18:44

I know one. Known as Callie. Her parents are Greek.

I like it.

olderthanyouthink · 05/04/2017 18:44

Pretty but will be v annoying

I have a name that's not uncommon but the spelling confuse people. That's annoying enough having an unusual, hard to spell and pronounce name might be a step too far

helpimitchy · 05/04/2017 18:44

I much prefer cantaloupe.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 05/04/2017 18:45

I hid the baby name folder to reduce my blood pressure. YABU to create an AIBU thread about this.

AppleOfMyEye10 · 05/04/2017 18:46

Why would you do that to your child???😣

Supermagicsmile · 05/04/2017 18:47

As a huge Greys fan myself I think it's great. I called one of my girls Sofia because I loved it from the show! :)

fernanie · 05/04/2017 18:49

I went to uni with a Greek girl called Calliope, she went by Kalia. I think it's a beautiful name. Love PPs suggestion of Poppy as a NN too - very different feel from Kalia.
Also it's really not that unusual or hard to pronounce! Loads of people will be familiar with it.

BillSykesDog · 05/04/2017 18:49

She'll get called Callipo like the lolly.

OohNoDooEy · 05/04/2017 18:50

I know one. The consensus is that it sounds like the name of an sti.

I don't mind it but prefer Callie. I'm also a ga fan

Chloe84 · 05/04/2017 18:50

Sounds like a cross between scallop and Penelope.

But the name itself is lovely.

BCGRMDP · 05/04/2017 18:54

greys fan so would pronounce it right. love the name!

Goldfishjane · 05/04/2017 18:56

Itchy "much prefer cantaloupe"

As someone with a forrin name, your DD will have to deal with this type of shit at school. Then again I do think MN is probably worse for this type of thing.

HappyFlappy · 05/04/2017 18:57

It's a RN training station here, so I wouldn't use it. It would be a bit like calling your infant "Portsmouth" (Or Pompey)

GrumpyOldBag · 05/04/2017 18:58

Sounds like 'Callipers' to me.

So, yes, YWBU.
