Pronounced cal-y-oh-pee

Is it awful?

I love it. But we are all Greek names here so i would. I'm always surprised when people can't say what I consider fairly standard words. Surely Penelope, Hermione and Phoebe are so well known now people know the e on the end is ee.

Dd was nearly Persephone.

BeccaAnn · 05/04/2017 19:28

Gender: F Pronunciation: ka-LYE-oh-pee Meaning of Calliope: "beautiful voice" Origin of Calliope: Greek mythology name

Very beautiful name, just remember someone will always object to a name until you say this is my DD Calliope, then they cant say squat. x

OrlandaFuriosa · 05/04/2017 19:28

Better than Urania anyway..

wizzler · 05/04/2017 19:30

Love it... and am off to dig out my Greys box set again

TomaytoTomahto · 05/04/2017 19:31

Better than Urania anyway

This one just looks like a blend of Uranus and Hernia.

smilingsarahb · 05/04/2017 19:31

So is it callie oh pee or ca lye oh pee. I'm still not sure (the one I knew was the second pronunciation)

Screwinthetuna · 05/04/2017 19:34

I wouldn't because I read it as
Cally-ope and so I'm guessing she's get that all her life

buttercup54321 · 05/04/2017 19:36

Awful. Like Canopy. Calopee Gallopee

Mrsmadevans · 05/04/2017 19:37

I am a huge fan it's beautiful!

user789653241 · 05/04/2017 19:39

I think it is a beautiful name. Go for it.

Buck3t · 05/04/2017 19:43

Calliope is wonderful. That was one of my name's. Muse of music. Question is do you like it?

BroomstickOfLove · 05/04/2017 19:43

I like it. It was on the shortlist for DD, but we went with something else instead.

Booboostwo · 05/04/2017 19:44

I'm Greek so wouldn't have a problem pronouncing it but it strikes me as very old fashioned. The kind of name you give your kid to please its grandmother but always use a shortened version.

Beeziekn33ze · 05/04/2017 19:53

It's your choice, personally I like it.

CaptainHammer · 05/04/2017 19:53

If it's good enough for Felicia Day then go for it!

It's 'Cal-eye-oh-pee' isn't it? That's how they say it on the episode of Thomas.

amusedbush · 05/04/2017 19:59

I'd never have known how to pronounce it if I wasn't such a massive Grey's fan. I've never heard the name outside of the show.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 05/04/2017 20:02

Isn't it that creepy musical instrument??

zozozoo · 05/04/2017 20:02

i wonder if she'll need callipers

reuset · 05/04/2017 20:06

Well, first of all you felt the need to tell people how it ought to be pronounced, that would indicate potential pronunciation issues for some. Grin

I think it's ugly, there are far nicer classical Greek names to choose from, and it sounds a bit like Calliper and melons. There are far worse names out there of course, so the choice, ultimately, is yours...

greeeen · 05/04/2017 20:07

I would pronounce it Cally-ope and it makes me think of melons. I don't really like it but there's no reason you can't use it, it seems like many love it.

ohidoliketobebesidethecoast · 05/04/2017 20:08

Truly, tho some people are saying 'no one will know how to pronounce it', many will! I did, and I don't watch greys anatomy at all. There are many unusual names around nowadays, and people get to grips with them, its no biggie.
Persephone was mentioned, its similar, many people will know how to pronounce it, a few won't (presumably they'll say 'percyphone'!?), they'll learn, everyone will carry on as normal :-D.

Imamouseduh · 05/04/2017 20:09

It's Greek isn't it? So I'd think most people would know how to pronounce it. I like it.

Mari50 · 05/04/2017 20:10

Calliope makes me think of antelope. But you can call your baby what you want. My DD's name is 'inspired' by greys anatomy so I can't say owt!! I don't admit that in public though.
