Pronounced cal-y-oh-pee

Is it awful?

HighwayDragon1 · 05/04/2017 18:03

I'd assume it was pronounced callie-ope (like hope without the h)

DedicationToSparkleMotion · 05/04/2017 18:05

Double LL is misleading, should only have one. Otherwise it's lovely. Big Greys fan though.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/04/2017 18:07

Oyster, it's just another ridiculous 'trying too hard to be trendy" name. It will be continually spelled incorrectly by people throughout her life too. Why do people lumber their children with these frankly ridiculous names.

lazydog · 05/04/2017 18:08

I don't mind it. Wouldn't be one I'd choose, but it's nice enough. It does have the strong association with these little guys for me though, as we have swarms of them around our feeders in the summertime.

It reminds me of Blinded By The Light' - the calliope crashed to the ground.

DP's family call him Cally, it was his childhood nickname, and I know another male Cally so I think if it as a man's name.

danTDM · 05/04/2017 18:10

Absolutely love it Grin

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 05/04/2017 18:10

I love it! I'm a GA fan though.

Rossigigi · 05/04/2017 18:12

Love love love the name!

Rossigigi · 05/04/2017 18:13

Am a greys fan though Wink

rosethyme · 05/04/2017 18:16

It sounds like an object rather than a name, sorry.

PuntCuffin · 05/04/2017 18:18

No, it really shouldn't. It is most definitely a double L in Calliope.

Meekonsandwich · 05/04/2017 18:18

I really like it but my first thought was cantelope haha sorry

spiderlight · 05/04/2017 18:20

I know a lovely little Calliope, but she's always known as Callie.

tygr · 05/04/2017 18:21

For people who say it's awful, sounds like an object or try hard trendy:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calliope

I only know it from Grey's Anatomy. I like the character but couldn't immediately recall the pronunciation. Cali is nice for every day.

PlayOnWurtz · 05/04/2017 18:22

Horrible name

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2017 18:23

That link doesn't make it any less awful.

FurryElephant · 05/04/2017 18:24

I like Callie but although thought Calliope was pronounced Cally-ope... so people might not know how to say it if they're as dumb as I am Grinbut I like the actual pronunciation!

Scottishchick39 · 05/04/2017 18:25

It's grown on my after 12 seasons of Greys anatomy back to back but I did think it was weird to begin with.

MaidOfStars · 05/04/2017 18:27

I prefer Cassiopeia though. YY to PP re: Greek names!

readthethread · 05/04/2017 18:27

honest answer, it sounds like an illness to me. sorry.

readthethread · 05/04/2017 18:27

maybe because i've just written an OP about talipes !

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 05/04/2017 18:27

I like Calliope.

DD is known as Callie or Cal (her first name isn't Calliope though, it's a Welsh name), we get lots of compliments on it.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/04/2017 18:27

I'd say it depends on the last name.

Calliope Brown (nope)
Calliope Wentworth-Smythe (yep)
Calliope Ledbetter (nope)
Calliope van der Husen (yep)

CaoNiMartacus · 05/04/2017 18:29

The meaning is nice, but it looks too much like "caliper" IMO.

Bohemond · 05/04/2017 18:29

If DS had been a girl I was going for Calliope nn Poppy
I like your pronunciation but Greek friends advised me it should be said cally o pay which I was less keen on.
