Pronounced cal-y-oh-pee

Is it awful?

To the extent that British people can pronounce it at all, I think it will be Cal -lee-oh -pay, at least that's how I was told to say it in school.

PutThatPomBearBack · 05/04/2017 17:51

Three agreed. AIBU has lost its purpose.

PotteringAlong · 05/04/2017 17:51

Thomas the tank engine my specialist mastermind subject was the first thing I thought of.

To call my baby calliope?
TheHodgeoftheHedge · 05/04/2017 17:52

I wouldn't because it's the name of a musical instrument (relatively well known in the south of America). It would be like calling a kid "piano" for me. Sorry.

Obsidian77 · 05/04/2017 17:52

I like it but it is quite unusual. Unless you are vairy posh?

blueskyinmarch · 05/04/2017 17:53

I like it but i am a Grey’s Anatomy fan. You will really need to also like Callie though as that is likely what she will end up being called.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2017 17:54

In a few years there will be a 'A brother/sister for Calliope ?' thread. That will be a toughie. Grin

TeaQuiero · 05/04/2017 17:54

People can be pretty ignorant. Even Phoebes and Penelopes get British-raised, English speaking adults who can't pronounce their names. In the US the primary association is circus-ground calliope music, so also not very positive.

Cagliostro · 05/04/2017 17:54

I love it but I'm not brave enough to use it as a first name - possibly for a middle name though. I love Callie as well

RedSandYellowSand · 05/04/2017 17:55

It is the name of the Naval Reserve ship on the Tyne in Newcastle.
I'd pronounce it Cal-ie-o-pee - ie being like the I in I like it

Haggis you could just hide the thread on site. Subject matter is pretty obvious from the title.

It's a lovely name and no issue with pronunciation. But then I studied Ancient Greek for GCSE so may have a skewed view.

PuntCuffin · 05/04/2017 17:56

Sight...

MaidenMotherCrone · 05/04/2017 17:56

I love it and yes I'm a Grey's fan.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/04/2017 17:56

Yes it is awful.

Valeriemalorie · 05/04/2017 17:57

I like it and know how to pronounce it. It reminds me of Penelope and Hermione.

DonaldStott · 05/04/2017 17:57

Sounds like Karaoke, and makes me think of callipers.

Leontine · 05/04/2017 17:59

I absolutely love Calliope. It's one of my favourite names.

PinkSquash · 05/04/2017 17:59

I knew a Calliope, she hated it growing up and was always known as Cally

IloveBanff · 05/04/2017 18:00

Like PPs I also think of callipers.

IloveBanff · 05/04/2017 18:01

Also she'll have a lifetime of having to spell it out to people on the phone.

Coldilox · 05/04/2017 18:01

I love Callie as a shortened version

TomaytoTomahto · 05/04/2017 18:02

If it weren't for Grey's Anatomy I'd have pronounced it wrong.

Oysterbabe · 05/04/2017 18:02

It's awful, really, really awful. I'm surprised by all the love it's getting on this thread.
In my head I say it like Alley-oop! Like you might say while lifting someone up.

Valeriemalorie · 05/04/2017 18:02

Just re-read this, I would say it ca-lie-o-pee though?!
