to wonder why the fuss about Easter and the national trust?

Theresa May has been quoted as being "furious" about the national trust removing easter from their egg hunts. Because she's the daughter of a vicar and a NT member Hmm

Now I had a look at the national trust poster and it clearly says Easter in big letters. They've just called the activities "egg hunts" but it's very clear it's happening at Easter.

AIBU to think she's massively over reacting over a non issue and might well be reminded that Easter was originally a pagan festival

Haven't read the thread, but we went to a National Trust House at the weekend. Staff there asked if our children wanted to do the Easter egg hunt. It also said 'Easter' on the posters they had.

PickAChew · 04/04/2017 11:26

I have now read the words "egg hunt" in y head so many times that they're coming out as "egg cunt"

Fitting, really.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/04/2017 11:30

Could any christians on this thread please explain to me what is the reason for having chocolate eggs on zombie jesus day? Are we meant to throw the chocolate eggs at zombie jesus akin to silver bullets on werewolves or do we eat them because chocolate to zombie jesus is like garlic to a vampire, every vicar I ask wont answer Grin

merrymouse · 04/04/2017 11:33

It's completely idiotic.

'Easter' is all over the website and publicity.

Obviously it's an Easter egg hunt because it's Easter.

Ironically, Nigel Farage is tweeting about defending 'our Judeo-Christian heritage'. He certainly sounds a bit shaky on the New Testament.

squoosh · 04/04/2017 11:33

She's clearly hoping the Daily Mail will give her a pat on the head.

Pathetic woman.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 04/04/2017 11:35

I will be referring to her as Theresa Dacre from now on.

Orlantina · 04/04/2017 11:35

What was that parable about the Good Samaritan?

NoLotteryWinYet · 04/04/2017 11:37

i agree with May (I can't believe I'm saying that!) 'Cadbury egg hunt' is crap. Whatever you think about religion, what about tradition? Cultural history? I do not want Easter to become about product differentiation - what next, 'Nestle egg hunt', 'Lindt Egg hunt'. Let's celebrate different brands of chocolate - yay! Er, not.

NoLotteryWinYet · 04/04/2017 11:38

Eggs are to celebrate new life - surely a celebration of Spring, new life, if you ignore the eternal life bit is a fine way to celebrate Easter. A pagan witch celebration would be bloody better than it being reduced to chocolate brands.

squoosh · 04/04/2017 11:43

Presumably the NT have received sponsorship from Cadbury's. Pretty standard fundraising idea. It's not as though Cadbury's have bought the whole of Easter.

Orlantina · 04/04/2017 11:45

If they had called it an Egg hunt (without the branding), would that have been an issue?

What did they call it last year?

NoLotteryWinYet · 04/04/2017 11:45

no but they're clearly attempting to change the idea of an 'Easter' egg hunt into a 'Cadburys' Egg Hunt.

squoosh · 04/04/2017 11:49

That's what normally happens with corporate sponsorship, the company name gets plastered over an event or a product. It's not like everyone who does the Easter egg thing goes on a NT egg hunt is it.

The NT has to make money too.

Willow2017 · 04/04/2017 11:49

Yeah but the catholic church has played around with 'easter' for centuaries and are still not decided.

They changed the days to suit themselves, different parts of the world celebrated at different times for hundreds of years depending on what the local traditions were, when the vernal equinox occured etc. Its not set in stone by anymeans.

DeleteOrDecay · 04/04/2017 11:59

The thing I find most shocking about this is that Theresa May actually passed comment on this, a total non-story, yet refused to comment on the' legs-it' debacle from last week.

People just love to be outraged without checking the facts. No wonder we have so much hate towards others in this country.

DeleteOrDecay · 04/04/2017 11:59

And now the word 'easter' is starting to look and sound very strange to me so maybe it's for the best that they abolish the word

DeleteOrDecay · 04/04/2017 12:01

no but they're clearly attempting to change the idea of an 'Easter' egg hunt into a 'Cadburys' Egg Hunt.

No idea where you got this conclusion from. It's a sponsorship deal, that's all.

NoLotteryWinYet · 04/04/2017 12:01

i don't see how Easter traditions having evolved means that it's ok for Cadburys to completely remove the word Easter. It might be branding but it is heavy handed and flat footed.

I agree though, its Cadbury that are clearly responsible for this, not the NT. Another sign of the company and the chocolate going downhill.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/04/2017 12:01

Here we go. From creativepool, a marketing industry website. Likely taken from Cadburys prrss reslease:

...The annual Easter egg hunt, which launches on Friday 14th April and runs nationwide over the Easter weekend, forms part of Cadbury’s wider seasonal campaign. Building on the natural association between the brand and the Easter holiday, the activation is designed to encourage direct participation from families across the UK, with the ultimate aim of establishing Cadbury as “THE Easter Treat.” The partnership plays a key role in cementing the idea of Cadbury as owners of the Easter egg hunt into the minds of the British consumer.

user1471521456 · 04/04/2017 12:01

*Technically, aren't Easter eggs bigger than the mini eggs they will probably be looking for?

It's not like they'll be looking for big Easter eggs.*

If it is the same as previous years, there is usually some sort of trail around the property where you look for clues, which will probably be marked by some sort of egg, usually a laminated picture. When you have gathered all the clues, you go back to the start and your prize is an easter egg.

Clearly I have been to far too many NT easter egg hunts Blush.

liquidrevolution · 04/04/2017 12:02

For all those wanting to do an egg hunt but not a cadburys one Historic Royal Palaces egg hunts are sponsored by Lindt.

A far superior chocolate...

DeleteOrDecay · 04/04/2017 12:02

Oh my god, they haven't completely removed the word Easter from anywhere.

The word 'Easter' is physically printed onto their eggs ffs.

But don't let facts get in the way of your outrage.

merrymouse · 04/04/2017 12:04

*no but they're clearly attempting to change the idea of an 'Easter' egg hunt into a 'Cadburys' Egg Hunt.+

They had a sponsored thread asking about Easter traditions.

Their URL has the word Easter.

easter.cadbury.co.uk/find-an-egg-hunt/

They want people to 'enjoy Easter fun'.

I can understand why Christians would be offended that egg hunts trivialise Easter, and it would make sense if Quakers felt that celebrating Easter disrespected the Cadbury's Quaker roots. (although I suspect Cadburys have always sold Christmas and Easter goods - would be interesting to know).

Of course from Cadbury's point of view the point of the egg hunt is to sell chocolate eggs. However the point of making chocolate eggs has always been to sell chocolate eggs.

The idea that the concept of Easter is threatened by the branding of chocolate eggs is completely and utterly ridiculous.
