to wonder why the fuss about Easter and the national trust?

Theresa May has been quoted as being "furious" about the national trust removing easter from their egg hunts. Because she's the daughter of a vicar and a NT member Hmm

Now I had a look at the national trust poster and it clearly says Easter in big letters. They've just called the activities "egg hunts" but it's very clear it's happening at Easter.

AIBU to think she's massively over reacting over a non issue and might well be reminded that Easter was originally a pagan festival

It's part of a consistent strategy to spark a sense of oppression amongst Christians in the hope that this will promote more widespread activism in this country's public and political life, and it seems to be working; the proportion of people holding public office and deep christian views (as opposed to the 'church at christmas' "christians") is much higher than in the general population.

Get people worked up often enough and eventually they are likely to do something about it. Doesn't matter if it's actually true.

These are the people desperately promoting church and religious free schools to try and arrest the fact that Christianity is dying in this country - the current prediction is that by 2020 only 4% of the country will regularly attend church at an average age of 56.

They are counting on a general apathy to religion among the majority of the population in this country, who are quite rightly concerned with more important stuff like brexit, the NHS, etc., to enable them to pursue a religious agenda (while being careful not to be too overt about it). It needs to be resisted.

Halal chocolate eggs

Owllady · 04/04/2017 13:05

It's all on Cadburys Twitter feed. I think it started this weekend, headed up by Britain First members from what I believe.

merrymouse · 04/04/2017 13:06

I think it's less about religion and more about nationalism. Christians are quite capable of celebrating Easter by going to church.

If it's not all part of the same campaign, I'll eat Easter

areyoubeingserviced · 04/04/2017 13:10

Bigots will blame it on Islam and political correctness,

Bigots will blame it on Islam and political correctness,

Absolutely. These both hit the nail on the head.

I find it all so embarrassing. One more front page like today's Sun or Daily Telegraph and I think I will cringe myself inside out.

BonnyScotland · 04/04/2017 13:24

self promotion ... nothing more

FerdinandsRevenge · 04/04/2017 13:30

The Resurrection is the main tenet of the Christian faith, therefore it's not unreasonable for people to be upset about it.

And then Jesus did rise up and search for chocolate Eggs in areas of National beauty as placed by a commercial conglomerate/white rabbit

I'm glad you pointed out this little known fact, Ferdinand. Grin It would have been a far livelier post-resurrection moment than a brief conversation with an understandably confused Mary Magdalene (though I've always quite liked that at least one of the gospels has her confusing Jesus with the gardener) and vanishing again.

EveGarnett · 04/04/2017 13:55

I'm just amazed the National Trust are brave enought to hold an Easter egg hunt, given that they seem scared to death to let any members walk on wet grass incase they slip, or cross a bridge in case they fall.

I'm so sick of being nannied by them I'm not renewing my membership this year......oh and don't even get me started about not being allowed to take my small rucksack (that I use in leiu of a handbag) into a house even though I was prepared to carry it like a handbag, while the woman in front of me carried in a whopping great portmanteau that appeared to excite no interest whatsoever - and it was slung over her shoulder !

FFS NT - get a grip.... Grin I feel better now

merrymouse · 04/04/2017 14:05

I though the NT were all about getting children to be active and doing the 50 things before you are 11 and 3/4. I must be visiting different properties.

boolifooli · 04/04/2017 14:15

IT looks like an advertising ploy that has indirectly wound up pearl clutchers.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 04/04/2017 14:23

Imagine being the PM and having lots of things to be furious about but losing your shit over the word Easter being omitted from chocolate boxes because your father's a vicar. It was originally a pagan festival anyway.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 04/04/2017 14:25

Hmm. Agreed but churches in this country are not oppressed. Not hoe they'd like to think they are anyway. Yezedi christian women are oppressed yes, so are several other groups subject to living in areas dominated by ISIS, yes; people in the UK who are free to worship as they please? Oppressed? Certainly not.

merrymouse · 04/04/2017 14:26

Well, with Theresa May's help they have certainly managed to communicate widely that there will be Cadbury's egg hunts at national trust properties this Easter

AwaywiththePixies27 · 04/04/2017 14:26

*how not hoe. Blush

MitzyLeFrouf · 04/04/2017 14:28

Agreed but churches in this country are not oppressed.

Absolutely they're not. That's what makes all the faux 'us Christians are being discriminated against' angst all the more laughable.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 04/04/2017 14:55

It would be laughable Mitzy if it weren't for their fellow christian brothers and sisters actually suffering real oppression under the hands of monsters like ISIS.

Peregrina · 04/04/2017 15:23

the proportion of people holding public office and deep christian views (as opposed to the 'church at christmas' "christians") is much higher than in the general population.

I am not sure that their 'deep Christian' views are necessarily ones shared with other Christians. May for one, IMO, doesn't seem to know about compassion, which is fundamental to Christ's teachings. She's much more like the Scribes and Pharisees - puffed up with her own righteousness, and Jesus had plenty to say about them.

Iwannasnack · 04/04/2017 15:28

It's a distraction. TM is currently in Saudi Arabia, a country with an appalling human rights record, discussing arms trade deals. Instead of discussing this the media is distracted by a non story about Easter eggs!

Owllady · 04/04/2017 15:30

So true Peregrina :) I'm sure Jesus didn't just care about the brightest and the best but I think this is a fantastic angle to take with any austerity measures. WWJD, your Father was a vicar type thing.
Jesus after all, taught empathy to those with leprosy. He didn't removed their disability benefits and have then assessed by Atos

Owllady · 04/04/2017 15:31

I hate autocorrect.

Orlantina · 04/04/2017 15:32

I wonder if they have Easter egg hunts in Saudi Arabia?
