Job interview at a holiday/hotel/B&B place (trying not to identify myself)

Owner is showing me around and explaining how to clean the rooms, systems etc

Gets to the bedding and says "if the occupant has only stayed one night we don't change the bedding, just smooth it out and iron". I.e. The next guest gets the same fucking bedding Envy

That's grim right? And they have FIVE STARS

I know someone who chambermaided in a 5* hotel and said same cloth is used to clean everything in room and bathroom - including the cups/ glasses! You might imagine they would be taken for washing and replaced with clean, but apparently no. I would have thought clean linen a basic though - that is seriuosly unhygienic. And one of the pleasures of a hotel but is the stiff starchy clean sheets. You can usually notice if linen is used though, the pillows will smell of someone elses perfume even after one night.

Relatives of mine ran a busy B&B and sometimes we would stay there, got bumped to the sofa /sitting room floor coupla times. Every single bed that had been slept in was stripped daily, the 100% cotton white sheets were boil washed, dried, ironed, and put back on. Bedspreads laundered weekly.

Not only that but a full English fried breakfast with options was provided, packed lunches and home cooked dinners available to order, no dishwasher and no tumble dryer!

I was exhausted just witnessing all this action They made a mint and retired to Spain and only wash their own sheets about once a month now!

I booked in advance and stayed at the Travelodge in Winchester a few years ago and felt something rough on my feet as I was settling down in bed, and realised there were biscuit crumbs all over the sheet. I then noticed that the sheet was very crumpled and had obviously been slept in. So got dressed and trudged down to reception to complain. The receptionist apologised but carried on tidying her desk , whilst I just stood there. I had to insist they changed the sheets immediately as I was not sleeping in a used bed. She did not seem at all surprised with what I was complaining about, but had no intention of offering to change the sheets. So disgusted couldn’t wait to leave, I would rather sleep in my car than ever stay at a Travelodge again.

So why is this subject not raised again by the media and all those tv documentary/investigation programmes to help show up these companies? I'm going to be checking, complaining and stripping beds from now on plus taking drinks in from outside and no more bothering to pay extra for stars!

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 03/04/2017 23:18

DS worked in a Travelodge and the dishes were put in the dishwasher and they had to use cloths in a specific and sensible-sounding way to clean bathrooms. I asked lots of questions about this. He was also paid for his time rather than per room but was not expected to take the mick and work slowly. I'll ask him about the bedding.
All his minging stories were about the disgusting mess left by guests.

MollyHuaCha · 03/04/2017 23:18

OP, you have to give us a clue as to where this hotel is please...

Dothehokeykokey · 03/04/2017 23:26

Anyone else reading this having just clambered into a hotel bed?

It's a bit wrinkly, but smells clean enough

dowhatnow · 03/04/2017 23:34

I'm going to decant some fairy liquid into one of those travel bottles in future and do the sniff test. Shock

WildBelle · 03/04/2017 23:37

Omg this is so fousty. I'm staying in a hotel on Saturday night (alone, since I dumped bf on Friday). Was looking forward to it, but now, not so much.

I always turf any cushions or other bed adornments that clearly never get washed off straight away. And try not to think about the overblanket things that also must never get washed. But the sheets...sweet Jesus no.

hmcAsWas · 03/04/2017 23:40

I always lock my toothbrush in the safe when I stay in a hotel, in case the chamber maid thinks it is amusing to clean the sink or toilet rim with it

Pigeonpost · 03/04/2017 23:49

That is fucking disgusting. We Airbnb our spare room and every single guest gets clean ironed bedding. I clean the room with two microfibre cloths and antibac cleaner, always leave the toilet until last. Glasses and mugs get washed up in the kitchen sink and the only thing I would do with the guest's used towels is soak up any pools of water left in the shower if I'm cleaning right after they check out. Bleeeeerruuugggh to the tales above!!

Tinklebinkle · 04/04/2017 00:13

I was born and bought up in a hotel and lived in one for 20 years and NEVER a day passed that a dirty bed was passed to a new guest. Cleanliness was an absolute essential and a thing of pride. We are damn clean oooop North! Halo

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 04/04/2017 00:16

One of dh'a relatives used to do B&B. She burnt the sheets after one couple stayed.

True devotion to the cause.

DropZoneOne · 04/04/2017 00:18

I inspect hotels as part of my job. One in Edinburgh was very proud that the tea cups were sealed in plastic "to prove they've been cleaned properly". I was thinking it was a spectacular waste of plastic packaging but now I understand why you'd be pleased to see it!

e1y1 · 04/04/2017 01:44

This is precisely why when I stay in a hotel, I won't use the provided cups/kettle, I won't use the provided towels (bring my own) and sleep on top of the sheets - ONLY if I am freezing, will get in them.

End of the day, the person cleaning the room isn't the one staying there, so won't be as picky hygiene wise. Of course, I am sure there are some conscientious housekeeping staff and I am sure they work hard, but alway that risk you will get a room that has been "cleaned" by someone who doesn't give a shit.

e1y1 · 04/04/2017 01:47

We are damn clean oooop North!

True that, North is cleaner HERE

OwlinaTree · 04/04/2017 07:16

We're currently just watching what's going on, reporting back to management before we take over and get rid of all the current staff.

Surely most of these staff are following instructions. Seems unnecessary to sack then all. Surely it's management that need to issue better instructions and supervise?

JustPoppingBy · 04/04/2017 07:41

What happens if you get a succession of 5/6 one night staying guests?
Where is the line drawn for changing the bedding?
Gruesome 😳

HectorPlasm · 04/04/2017 12:52

In one well known crap hotel in Manchester (think patriotic song!), my mate hopped out of bed in the dark to go to the loo and trod with his bare foot on what turned out to be a half chewed and spat out wine gum that was lurking on the floor ....

Reebs123 · 04/04/2017 17:40

Yuck. Feeling sick reading this thread. 😖😖😖

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/04/2017 17:50

But then, how many of us have died so far of being in a hotel room?

What you don't know, and all that... not that I agree with any of this, I demand clean sheets and stuff like that!

Sparklyglitter · 04/04/2017 17:52

That's disgusting! And surely unhealthy! Fungal toes, contagious skin conditions, venerial diseases...need I say more! [ shock]

vixen68 · 04/04/2017 17:52

That's disgusting- are you sure they were 5 stars and not a line of dead fleas ? Grin

Deidre21 · 04/04/2017 18:00

Disgusting! Filthy!

EllenMP · 04/04/2017 18:00

Surely they mean if the same guest is staying for another night?
