Job interview at a holiday/hotel/B&B place (trying not to identify myself)

Owner is showing me around and explaining how to clean the rooms, systems etc

Gets to the bedding and says "if the occupant has only stayed one night we don't change the bedding, just smooth it out and iron". I.e. The next guest gets the same fucking bedding Envy

That's grim right? And they have FIVE STARS

...get over yourselves. this is how ocd starts

Dowser · 04/04/2017 23:32

Strip the bed when you leave and dump the sheets in the bathroom

That way the next guest gets clean ones

nannieann · 05/04/2017 00:11

Thanks for this thread. I now realise I have OCD. Off to Cornwall tomorrow and will definitely Trip Advisor the hotel if the sheets don't smell of fresh laundry.

FairytalesAreBullshit · 05/04/2017 00:31

I used to be a total hotel snob, price wasn't an issue, then in one 5* hotel in London, hubby got into bed & said I thought you were on (your period) last week. I thought it was a random question, so pulled a funny face and said yes. The beds had a sheet, a duvet, plus top cover. DH pulled loose all the bedding, it looked like someone had been slaughtered on the bed, but lower down if that makes sense. (Being open minded I dread to think what else was on the sheets on top of menstrual blood!) Immediate call to Reception demanding the Manager at once, she was just scarlet with embarrassment, oh it must have been an over sight. It wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't paid extra for a Superior room.

Always pull the covers off to check sheets, I understand overheads, plus the a quick glance all looks ok. With the heavy bedspreads I don't think you can tell if the sheets are super fresh.

Since whilst DH prefers to use superior rooms as you get special access to lounges, if away I have no issue with chain hotels like Premier Inn etc.

Also had pubes in a bed before. So I think it's an industry wide thing as the chambermaids are paid shit money and have next to no time to turn rooms around.

I never ever thought about cups before. Yuk, yuk, yuk!

Judyzoo · 05/04/2017 00:45

OMG that's such a good idea - (I didn't even think of that...and I'm now thinking back to the hotels I've stayed in...eek!)

FairfaxAikman · 05/04/2017 01:15

I'm guessing this practice is why I got scabies after staying in a (now closed) London hotel Confused

HorridHenryrule · 05/04/2017 01:45
  1. Pack washing up liquid for dirty hotel cups.
  2. Pack bed sheets to change when I get to hotel.
  3. Bring bleach to clean out bathroom facilities.

ewwwwww

HorridHenryrule · 05/04/2017 01:47

Fairfax that sounds dreadful it puts you of staying in hotels for life,

FairytalesAreBullshit · 05/04/2017 01:49

I can even recall toilets where I hope the person had been drunk and made a mess of the top bit of the loo & under the seat. So I would suggest disposable rubber gloves & bleach wipes.

ImaLannister · 05/04/2017 01:49

Great altho rather unfortunate thread! I hope it isn't true. Just barfed
Me and DP was staying in The Grand Hotel Scarborough and had a large jacuzzi bath tub in the bathroom. We got in the jacuzzi bath tub, smoochy smoochy, bottle of wine, turned on the jets n out came loads of random people's pubes that must have been trapped in the jets. These pubes were just whizzing around us in the bath tub. I had never jumped out of a jacuzzi bath tub so fast in my life. I felt itchy, disgusting, needed a shower. I honestly felt sick and am scarred for life now.

MrsCobain · 05/04/2017 01:57

My ex and I stayed in a Hilton in Egypt years ago.

We got mushroom risotto for dinner.

He chewed on something tough.

It was a toenail.

He actually burst in to tears.

MrsCobain · 05/04/2017 02:04

I can't believe a couple of you think it's not bad. Bum worms?!!! Bum juice? Penis secretions?! Good god there are so many things from other people I don't want to touch.

Bleurgh.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2017 02:27

No it's not, Stablemable Hmm

silkpyjamasallday · 05/04/2017 08:46

An ex of mine peed in a kettle in a hotel (I wasn't there he just told me), I massively lost respect for him just so disgusting and unnecessary! I never use the kettles in the rooms now for this reason!

FairfaxAikman · 05/04/2017 09:52

Horrid yes it was.
Luckily my grandmother was a nurse in Glasgow in the 50s so was well versed in treating it, but by god it itched.

Deejoda · 05/04/2017 10:46

I saw something on TV where someone found underwear in the kettle in a hotel. Apparently the previous person had put their knickers in the kettle and boiled it to do their laundry...

😲 this is making feel sick/outraged!

ZaziesPaws · 05/04/2017 11:00

TRIPADVISOR

OldandJaded · 05/04/2017 11:44

I've worked in hospitality and I've never done this nor heard of it being done where I worked but I can believe it - housekeeping staff are treated as the lowest of the low and they have ridiculous time scales to fit a scrupulous clean into, plus the fact they're often young kids in their first job with very little training and help not to mention cheap labour
Cleaning/drying bathrooms with towels is pretty common though I think though personally I didn't do it, but also took far too long cleaning the rooms and didn't last very long in housekeeping!

redjoker · 05/04/2017 11:58

i know someone that found a poo in a hotel kettle before, and another that found sick down the side of a bed.

You really do have to wonder what it takes for someone to feel the need to do a dump in a kettle

Jayne35 · 05/04/2017 12:02

I also work in a Hotel (not in housekeeping admittedly but I know processes well enough), I also think the OP is confused or it wasn't explained properly as most Hotels don't change sheets everyday for the same guest, but on departure.

dirty glasses are replaced with clean ones - not wiped where I work and budget hotels are possibly better on this as they use the disposable ones - which are wrapped.

Dressing gowns and slippers are never changed or washed - Aren't these items in sealed bags in most Hotels?

I wouldn't let these things put me off anyway as yes there will be some dirty Hotels but there are many good ones. Oh and guests can be disgusting too Grin

katiekrafter · 05/04/2017 12:51

I suppose from a pure infection control point of view, ironing at over 120 degrees is actually a better option than washing at 40. But it still feels yuk!

Naty1 · 05/04/2017 13:33

Tbh it is the guests that are disgusting in most of the PP, except in the not changed beds.

However, wiping the bathroom down with the last persons towels!!
Using the toilet cloths on the cups! That could i suspect kill people.
I think the issue here is staff pay possibly, but in that i would say fine all staff doing such things, but seeing as they are not earning a lot and the incentive to not do things properly must be high.
I would think not changing bedding would be fraudulent or something as you are agreeing to pay for something they are not providing?

Jessicafirsttimer · 05/04/2017 16:03

I checked into a nice hotel once and found blood all over the bed cover (quilt type thing). It looked like period. They offered me another room but I politely declined and drove home instead. Will NEVER go there again...

Dianetheartist · 05/04/2017 17:53

We stayed in a country pub in the wilds of Wales a few years ago....the owner was a funny little man,,, a bit of a letch,,,gave me the creeps,, our room had a double jacuzzi ... I went in the bedside drawer to see if there was a hairdryer and there was a set of sex toys and a tube of cherry flavour lube in there!!!! All new in a sealed package... Straight away I was convinced there was hidden cameras in there.. I just couldn't relax there at all...
Im sure they were not left by previous people--surely you wouldnt forget to take them home with you?
Gave me the creeps good and proper!

LambChopsMcGee · 05/04/2017 18:12

Yeah when I worked in a motel we always changed sheets between guests, but if a guest was staying multiple days we didn't change every day, just every two or three days. We'd just tidy up the bed. They must have meant that OP, surely.
