Job interview at a holiday/hotel/B&B place (trying not to identify myself)

Owner is showing me around and explaining how to clean the rooms, systems etc

Gets to the bedding and says "if the occupant has only stayed one night we don't change the bedding, just smooth it out and iron". I.e. The next guest gets the same fucking bedding Envy

That's grim right? And they have FIVE STARS

OP posts:
nursy1 · 03/04/2017 21:39

I heard from a chambermaid once about turning duvet over and changing bottom sheet Wink

Crispbutty · 03/04/2017 21:42

I work at a youth hostel and we always change the bedding after every guest without fail.

gigglemug · 03/04/2017 21:43

So what would happen if several people in a row happened to stay just one night in the same room? Would that bed never get changed?

BertieBotts · 03/04/2017 21:43

Have you seen that Gordon Ramsay episode where he gets the UV light out? Boooooak.

Hewillalwaysbemyman · 03/04/2017 21:44

This is why I always take my own sheets and pillowcases!

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 03/04/2017 21:45

Are you really saying that you would plug in an iron, wait for it to heat up, then iron a bottom sheet, top sheet then duvet cover as well as 4/6 pillow cases?

The time it took you to iron all that you could have changed the bed!

A 5* hotel wouldnt take the chance of being caught out doing this- it would absolutely ruin their business.

PurpleDaisies · 03/04/2017 21:46

I can't understand how anyone sleeps in someone else's sheets if the sheets are changed when the guest leaves.

Can anyone explain?

PortiaCastis · 03/04/2017 21:46

Yes a bad review on trip advisor can kill a business

gigglemug · 03/04/2017 21:48

Purple - OP said sheets would remain unchanged for guests staying one night only. That's why I wonder what would happen if the next guest only stayed one night too. Ewww.

phoenixtherabbit · 03/04/2017 21:52

I really don't understand why nobody seems to understand the op.

A 'clean' is done after EVERY guest leaves the room. No matter how long they have stayed.

I'm guessing this is general vaccing, dusting, cleaning of bathrooms.

The bed is only changed IF the person has stayed longer than one night.

So If a guest stays one night, the room gets cleaned, but the sheets are not changed, just straightened, however everything else is still done. So next guest is sleeping in prev guests sheets.

If next guest stays two nights, all cleaning gets done, same as before except this time the sheets get stripped and replaced.

SoEverybodyDance · 03/04/2017 21:55

OMG! I'm going to rip the bedsheets off the bed from now on just to make sure the next person doesn't get my sheets...

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 03/04/2017 21:56

And this is why I boil then empty the room kettle 3 times and run the boiling water over the cups, glasses and teaspoons to scald them before using them.

usernjdhkvdgkb · 03/04/2017 21:57

My company have recently just been called in to a 5 star hotel/wedding venue to take over the housekeeping (though current staff don't know this yet and think we are just agency workers to help over over the current season)

I'm shocked by the level of cleaning

The same cloth since I have been there (6 weeks) is used to wipe toilets, sinks, baths occasionally they may spray a bit of cleaner

The bath, sinks etc are then dried with one of the used towels

The beds to get changed every time but the glasses/tea cups are just rinsed under the tap and dried with same used towel as everything else

And the same mop and bucket of water is used on the bathroom floors and the bedroom floors in 35 rooms

Frankly it's minging and for somewhere that the basic wedding cost 30k I would expect better.

We're currently just watching what's going on, reporting back to management before we take over and get rid of all the current staff.

In future when I go to a hotel I will be taking my own anti bad wipes, slippers and cups

phoenixtherabbit · 03/04/2017 21:59

As we're giving tips....

Before you drink tap water in a hotel (even if you're going to boil it) put your thumb over the tap. If pressure pushes on your thumb or water squirts out its mains and you can drink it. If there is little to no pressure its coming from a tank. Do not drink it.

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2017 22:02

I have heard of the 'pull and pluck' method of housekeeping where the sheets are just pulled tight again and the pubes/poo crumbs/whatever plucked off ready for the next guest....

GlitterGlue · 03/04/2017 22:03

How the hell is it easier to iron the bedding in situ than to put on a clean sheet? Dirty bastards.

mirime · 03/04/2017 22:04

My mum worked as a chambermaid many years ago. During training they were shown how to clean a room and my DM came back and told us how they used the towels to wipe round the bathroom, including the loo and then the same towel was used to to dry the cups. My mum never did it that way herself but I always give the cups in hotel rooms a damn good clean before using them.

gigglemug · 03/04/2017 22:05

I have to stop reading this thread now 🤢

YellowDinosaur · 03/04/2017 22:17

If it was a job interview, are you sure it wasn't a test, and you were meant to respond 'Nah, that's fucking minging, if I got the job I'd change between every guest'????

becausebecausebecause · 03/04/2017 22:19

I'm afraid I don't believe this. If you were newly being shown around as part of a job interview, no hotel of five star standard would dream of telling you to leave dirty sheets for a new guest. You simply must have misunderstood. For all they know, you could be an undercover hotel inspector or reviewer posing as a job applicant. Fair enough, staff giving each other tips on how to cut corners once in the role but no way at interview. Clean sheets are the single most important amenity of a hotel.

lakeswimmer · 03/04/2017 22:20

I've worked in two hotels as a chambermaid - both inexpensive - one in the UK and one in Holland and sheets were definitely changed after each guest!

Foxysoxy01 · 03/04/2017 22:21

OMG 'poo crumbs'

That is beyond grim,

Bamboofordinneragain · 03/04/2017 22:29

So, this hotel needs to do a version of the thing that most hotels do with towels -
Dear Valued Guests,
Here at we are always keen to do our best for the environment. Did you know that over 40,000,000 hotel sheets are washed every day?
So, if you want to help us and help the world too, and you have only stayed one night, here's what you do:
Crusty bits - just give them a little flick before you leave
Stray Pubes - add them to our 'pillow of memories, located in the lobby.
Body fluids, ketchup, personal ungents and lubricants - let our next guest play 'guess the stain' and be in with the chance to win a free night! Somewhere else.

laurzj82 · 03/04/2017 22:29

Just got back from a long weekend away. Luckily my tea didnt taste of knickers. I am off for a bath. In bleach.

Chevrons · 03/04/2017 22:34

Well I had an email to start on Tuesday and shadow another member of staff.

I shall report back and let you all know if I misunderstood
