Or at least tell me if it's just me that when I look at the baby names boards and I'd say a good number of names I've never heard of and TBH I find some strange and wonder if it's a wind up? So I'm wondering if it's just me perhaps in my own little boring bubble?

Meant to add I also know a Tarquin in my age group.

honeylulu · 31/03/2017 20:09

My son is now nearly 12 and these stew the names I can remember being duplicated in his nursery and school classes:
Oscar
James
Oliver
Joshua
Harry
Jack (and Jake)
Luke/Luca/Lucas
Liam
Tallulah
Isabella/Isabel
Mia
Eve/Eva
Lily
Lola
Finn/Finlay/Fingal

Daughter is nearly 3. Her contemporaries:
Amelia (lots)
Mya/Mia
Jayden
Freddie
Alfie
Frankie
Evie
Ella/Ellie
Ava
(Hers are skewed as she goes to a nursery attached to a Gospel church and lots of the children are also parishioners with fantastic biblical names like Tziporah, Malachi etc)

I'm nearly 43 and most popular names for my age were Emma, Joanne/Joanna, Nicola, Sarah and Jenny/Jennifer.
Every other boy was Mark or Jason.

I work in a law firm now and people seem to mainly have traditional names that don't "date". There is a joke that if you are female and not called Helen, Catherine, Alice or Elizabeth you will never get to qualify! (I have one of those names!)

I went to quite a posh school and here are some names I've never come across again:
Sorrel
Tryphena
Veroushka
November
St John
Cassius
Quintus (the fifth child in the family)

My mum is age 71 and says all her friends are Gill, Susan and Barbara.

If I was going to have more children (I'm not) they would be called Jasper and Isadora.

Cellardoor23 · 31/03/2017 20:27

I know a Sorrel and she went to a normal comprehensive. I love the name Jasper! But I had a cat named that so I could never use it.

BabychamSocialist · 31/03/2017 20:30

If we'd have had biological kids I always wanted to give them Irish names like Niamh and Colm, but we adopted so we didn't. I love their names though.

They're common English names but spelled with that Slavic influence, which I love as it puts a bit of a spin on them having fairly common names.

BabychamSocialist · 31/03/2017 20:33

I have a soft spot for the name Jasper as well, but it reminds me of Jasper Carrott so I had to settle for using it for the cat. Same with Dougal, which has forever been ruined by Father Ted! I imagine it's why DP gets funny looks when he's shouting Dougal in the park at the dog.

Dixiestamp · 31/03/2017 23:45

I went to a very non-posh comp and have worked in some, Honey, and have come across two Sorrels and two Tryphenas (weird, I know!).

CeriBerry · 01/04/2017 01:26

@Windtempress

Hedd is a welsh name. It means peace. It's the name of one of the most famous Welsh poets ever, Hedd Wyn. Why the 'good grief?' Just because a name isn't typically English doesn't mean it should be scoffed at!

mathanxiety · 01/04/2017 01:47

Elevated by Father Ted, elevated.
Father Ted is a sublime comedy - it can only improve whatever is associated with it.

I'll tell you something I have noticed - you can tell which kids have parents who were teenagers or older when Friends came out.

I teach sooo many Ross, Rachels and Joeys. It's too common to be a coincidence!

honeylulu · 01/04/2017 11:52

@BabychamSocilalist and @Dixiestamp
More Sorrels and Tryphenas out there - I never knew. Names do seem to become declasse over time . I can remember a steep surge in Beatrice and Eugenie after the princesses were born. Before those names were considered posh/regal/old fashioned.
Probably going to totally out myself here but my son is called Oscar, which is now as common as muck, but when I was a child it was thought of as unusual and a bit "eccentric".
My daughter is Arabella which my husband was reserved about as he thought it was too posh sounding. Maybe it used to be (a bit aristocratic) But we now know a few other Arabellas who are from "ordinary" families like us.
