Or at least tell me if it's just me that when I look at the baby names boards and I'd say a good number of names I've never heard of and TBH I find some strange and wonder if it's a wind up? So I'm wondering if it's just me perhaps in my own little boring bubble?

These lists are all so similar to those of my DC's friends and they're all born late 90s. Popular with their peer groups -

Edward (so many, all shortenings as well)
Oliver
Olivia
Sophie
Jack
James
Tom
Sam
Katie
Ellie
Lucy
Billy
Will
Lizzie
Erin
Toby
Jess
Caitlin

Obviously some were more of their time, e.g. Daniel, Megan, Gemma, Becky, Luke I don't think you see as many of anymore but also the odd name that seems to have surged in popularity, e.g. Isaac, Theo, Nora, Alfie.

There were some unusual names in their school but only a handful a year.

I don't know many babies but the ones I do know all have what I consider very classic names like Lucy and William.

lljkk · 31/03/2017 15:41

A lot of names I'd rate as "strange" are very popular on MN.
I imagine my children's names rate as "boring"! to many a MNer.
Which is fine. I will never consult this place for a name choice.

MyChemicalMummy · 31/03/2017 16:20

I most be really lower class, because I don't even know how to pronounce Ignatius.

Ohyesiam · 31/03/2017 16:23

In a primary school of 130, there are none of what I think of as the try hard names that people post about on here.

Janey50 · 31/03/2017 16:52

I've thought the same thing when I've looked at these popular baby name lists. I think where are all these Olivers and Amelias? I know hardly anyone with the supposedly most popular baby names. I think the only Jack I've ever known was my late Dd,but he was born in 1924 so that probably doesn't count towards today's popular names! Also it wasn't his real name, his real name was John and in those days Jack was a pet form of John (no I don't understand it either).Likewise the only Harry I've ever known was my elderly uncle. As for the girls names, the only one in the top 10 that I know someone is called is Emily, the daughter of an old college friend of mine.

LouisevilleLlama · 31/03/2017 17:03

Doubtful. It's much more acceptable and hilarious on MN to mock the middle class. Because they don't really love their children or have feelings. No, they purposely choose names which will get the dc beaten up because they are pretentious cunts. Apparently.

Again not my intention and i dont think I gave that inference at all

KeiraH · 31/03/2017 17:04

My daughters name is Freya Ophelia. I love the name Freya and it was always my first choice but didn't realise how popular it is. There are at least three other Freya's at every baby clinic appointment

Other baby names around me are:
Vogue
Brielle
Indie
Nirvana
Savannah Blu
Sienna
Bryson
Harley

LouisevilleLlama · 31/03/2017 17:05

No one has mentioned my son's name yet, but I don't know any others at all (there are rumours that there is another baby with that name in the city though).

Ooh there's only room in the city for one of them? Grin

LouisevilleLlama · 31/03/2017 17:19

Looking at the lists on the whole there doesn't seem to be what I would consider unusual names and generally the same or similar names that I knew growing up ( im mid 20's) or around here.

So why are there more exotic names on the baby name board suggested what seems almost constantly? Is it a wind up I wonder? Especially when people say they know X people names Y And I always here about people wanting unique names there doesn't seem that many In real life so do people lose their courage or get dissuaded I wonder?

Louiseville luckily the other one is in a much posher area than we are so hopefully it will not come down to a Highlander situation! Ofc my son would win Wink.

I did search on MN for his name before he was born and it wasn't much loved in the few threads that it was mentioned on! Decided to go for it anyway and gave him easier middle names so he can swap it over my dead body if he likes.

TomaytoTomahto · 31/03/2017 18:33

LouisevilleLlama I think it's mostly a case of people backing out the more "real" the situation appears to be. I'm in my mid-20s now, and my mother initially intended to name me "Drusilla". Apparently, after much protest from family members and the like, my parents decided to go with the name of a relative. It's still an extremely uncommon name in the UK, but thankfully it's nowhere near as pompous as that.

paddypants13 · 31/03/2017 18:38

I'm in my 30s and the most popular names were Sarah, Claire, Leanne, Fay/e, Nicola, Jodie, Helen, Emma, Victoria, Michelle, Rachel and Ruth.

I had Faye, Nicola, Leanne and Rachel on my list for dd. I think they're lovely names. (We chose a completely different name in the end though.)

lavenderandrose · 31/03/2017 18:38

I changed my first name.

JustDanceAddict · 31/03/2017 18:43

Haven't seen my DD's name on here yet.

thebakerwithboobs · 31/03/2017 18:53

I've had my name on here often enough so I'm not concerned to tell you my first name is January. I have a close friend with a daughter called Xanthe and she's nearly eight now so they were a touch ahead of the craze. Our family names are all relatively middle of the road (possibly apart from my own although it's normal to me!) Smile

BroomstickOfLove · 31/03/2017 18:55

The thing is that the unusual names are, by their very nature, unusual. If I were to post a list of the less usual names of the children I know, that would be pretty identifying, as some of them are very unusual indeed. So while there are entry of children called Freya/Noah/Freddie/George/Charlotte/Oliver/Lily/Tabitha etc, I'm not so keen on posting the rarer ones. I will admit to knowing several Athenes and Merlins, though.
