Or at least tell me if it's just me that when I look at the baby names boards and I'd say a good number of names I've never heard of and TBH I find some strange and wonder if it's a wind up? So I'm wondering if it's just me perhaps in my own little boring bubble?

These lists are great. So far I'm loving Olaf, Merlin and Vinnie.

There are loads of little ones called Lily, Millie, Tilly, Evie, Maisy, Daisy, Rosey. And most boys are called Josh, Joe, Jake, Jack or Alfie. I'd like to come across some Olafs in real life. Or anyone who names their recently newborn Roger or Cliff. Some names just aren't coming back.

Is this a thread where you aim to scoff at the names of the lower class?

Doubtful. It's much more acceptable and hilarious on MN to mock the middle class. Because they don't really love their children or have feelings. No, they purposely choose names which will get the dc beaten up because they are pretentious cunts. Apparently.

I have an elderly relative called Primrose and also know a Xanthe. I've never met an Olaf though...

Baby names fascinate me.

I find names trends fascinating and have just said so on the Baby Names board!
I would love to pinpoint the moment when a name stops being naff and starts being classy, then popular.
I have a theory that it's when the generation who carry the names start to die out.
An example: Alfie. In the 1980s, I worked with a woman whose newborn grandson had just been named Alfred, to be known as Alfie. She was beyond mortified, but explained that it was a family name for five generations, so not calling the baby Alfred would be unheard of. The thought of a baby Alfie was hilarious, but of course now it is incredibly popular.
When my son was born in 1993, there was a trend to call boys shortened names such as Tom, Ben, Josh, Joe etc. This was very fashionable with middle class parents and I imagine that's when Jack first started to climb up the polls.
The thought back then of calling a baby Wilfred, Ava, Sidney, Lily, Betty or any of the other 'on trend' names back in the 1990s was hilarious, but of course the generation that tended to have those names was still alive back then.
So by my logic, the next lot of trendy names will be my mum's generation - so stand by for a wave of Muriels, Dorises and Marjories in the next few years.
They may sound ridiculous now, but believe me, so did Jack and Ava in 1993 and Alfie in 1989.

ItWentDownMyHeartHole · 31/03/2017 13:01

cathf You're probably right. It'll be all Susan and Brian. Geoff and Jeff. Shirley.

wigglesrock · 31/03/2017 13:01

cathf I agree I remember my granny being completely bemused that the name Emily was becoming popular.. To her it was a very old fashioned, outdated name.

ephemeralfairy · 31/03/2017 13:04

I lived in London and Brighton for years but have recently moved to Scotland and am really noticing that names of kids here are far less pretentious outlandish than down south.

I was born in 77 and in my class there were 2 Josh, 3 Jacks and a Tom. I think those names were popular way before 1993. Loads of Gemmas, Rebeccas, Kate/Katie, Kerry, Nicola, Natalie, Sarah, Emma, Anna, Lucy, Melanie, Jodie, Samantha.

The most popular boys names in the toddler groups round here are Sebastian and Oliver. We have Edgar, Gulliver, Ptolemy, Elwood, Finbar and various other unusual ones too. Mine are unusual as well, i've not many anyone else the same names.

No one has mentioned my son's name yet, but I don't know any others at all (there are rumours that there is another baby with that name in the city though). Babies around me are:

Sophia
Maggie
Margot
Billy
Ellie-Louise
Cooper (x2)
Olly
Flynn
Abigail
Wolfgang
Euan
Melanie
Robin
Harrison
Ruby (x2)

In my year at school were endless Kathryns, Rebeccas, Matthews and Davids. And Kirstys! At least 3 of each in every class.
