AIBU to expect people not to leave there seats because I am fat

On numerous cases I get on a very busy train and I notice a vacant seat between two people, when I have done this I have had looks as if I have some contagious tropical disease. Or I have mega huffs and strange noises of discontent, or as happend today the person got up and stood until another seat was available . I am overweight, but you will catch it if I sit near you👹

And why is it okay for the 'right sized' people to touch others?. It's not, please point to any post that says it is.

I can't believe the sense of entitlement some overweight people have on this thread. Not only are they entitled to their own seat but also a quarter of the neighbours seat and if they don't like being squashed it's because they are mean fatists not anything to to with the fact that it's unpleasant and even painful for them.

FunkyChunk · 28/03/2017 09:18

I'm a size 14 and I wouldn't sit in one of the middle seats. It's not just others, I would feel quite uncomfortable too. The seats are narrow and my arse certainly isn't!

I really hate it when people encroach on my personal space, especially when I'm squashed right up to the window or half hanging off my seat into the aisle. I would inwardly groan too if someone squeezed themselves into a space that they don't fit.

ChrisYoungFuckingRocks · 28/03/2017 09:20

The 'fat' people on this thread are totally taking the piss lol, or haven't you noticed that? Shock

SuperBeagle · 28/03/2017 09:21

I'd be annoyed if someone significantly overweight sat down next to me in a train seat and then had the gall to bitch about my being annoyed. Soz. It's not me who's taking up more than their one seat.

Edballsisoneniftydancer · 28/03/2017 09:22

Sail...now THAT I can get on board with!

80sMum · 28/03/2017 09:23

If the seats had barriers, like these, then at least it would prevent the thighs touching.

AIBU to expect people not to leave there seats because I am fat
Gileswithachainsaw · 28/03/2017 09:24

I have a fair amount of junk in the trunk. I choose my seats very carefully or I stand. I find it rude to squeeze in touching people and taking up their space and I find it rude others will do the same to me. If they wanna sit fine but I have a right to not want be wedged into my seat so I'll stand thank you.

This also applies to skinny people and everyone in between. Amd those with questionable hygiene I do not wanna leave smelling if someone's weed either.

Get over yourself.

JonesyAndTheSalad · 28/03/2017 09:25

I don't want a strange man's thigh squashed against mine thank YOU very much!

You mention your "arm" touching them but I bet your legs do too!

I'm so far from "fattist" it's got to be believed but I am ALL for women and men having the right to their personal space and to not be touched by strangers.

shirleycartersaidso · 28/03/2017 09:26

On my commute you can barely fit three small people's shoulders in the seats - there's a certain amount of rearrangement so everyone can read / look at phones whatever when the third seat is taken.

If you were there first op I wouldn't try and squish in but if you tried to squish in on top of me I'd move.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/03/2017 09:26

I imagine that overweight people always touch the person next to them, so aren't maybe as aware that it's not usual for most people.

What a load of bollocks Grin On the odd occasion I have sat next to someone I am very conscious of not touching them - I get very anxious about personal contact in all situations so I can assure you I won't be touching them!

fourteenlittleducks · 28/03/2017 09:27

Nobody likes being squashed, but that's part of using public transport. If there's a free seat and someone fits in it, they're entitled to sit there even if others have less room. If people squash against me I don't try and make myself smaller, I spread knees a bit to protect my space and lean on them. It only annoys me if they spread in a terratorial way or hog the armrest or if they have BO. And I often have a toddler on my lap so they have to put up with her wriggling, kicking and trying to grab newspaper Blush

I think everyone needs to be a bit more tolerant.

SwissChristmasMuseum · 28/03/2017 09:28

Whatever happened to good manners?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/03/2017 09:29

fourteen Do you only lean on overweight people? If you don't want them to sit down then ask them not to and they will laugh at you deliberately touching them is far more obnoxious that if it's an accident

VenusOfWillendorf · 28/03/2017 09:30

I have the same right as anyone else to sit . Due to paying for it.
Yes, you do. If someone has said that you don't, then they are U.
But has anyone told you that you don't have the right to sit? From your first post, nobody has told you that you can't sit.

You asked - AIBU to expect people not to leave there seats because I am fat - and to that yes, you ABU if the reason they are moving is because you are fat and they are uncomfortable.

Lweji · 28/03/2017 09:31

If there's a free seat and someone fits in it

The key there is fit in it. I doubt the OP does if people keep getting up.

People don't like to get up in public transport and don't do it lightly. Grin

Maudlinmaud · 28/03/2017 09:34

What's the op to do then, stand for the duration of his journey?
I wouldn't move if a larger person sat down next to me, I wouldn't embarrass someone like that.

ElisavetaFartsonira · 28/03/2017 09:37

Since when was people moving away from you so you get more room to yourself a bad thing? I'd love this! The huffs would be a tiny price to pay. I'm overweight too, BMI high 20s, but apparently not enough since people will still insist on sitting next to me.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/03/2017 09:38

They embarrass themselves with the reaction.

People stand for all sorts if reasons. Getting their shopping together or getting off next stop so standing ready or guvubg up seat fir someone else or needing to ask driver a question.

Can't say I'd take any notice of someone moving unless someone made a big deal about it

SailAwaySailAwaySailAway · 28/03/2017 09:38

80smum those seats are a step in the right direction but the dividers need to be much higher.
And have built in fans.
And Do Not Disturb signs.
Smile

Dearlittleflo · 28/03/2017 09:38

As someone who commutes on the tube, I am well used to touching/being touched by other people- half the time you're completely squished in a person sandwich. And yet, if I were on a normal train, I'd rather stand than be too close to someone sitting down (thighs touching etc)- I'd feel permanently conscious of it in that situation, in a way that I don't on the tube.

It's not fattist at all. It's just a preference. Having said that, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable getting up because a fat person had sat down- it would be too obvious and I'd feel rude. So I would probably wait for a station, then get off the train and get on again in the next carriage.

Lweji · 28/03/2017 09:38

I wouldn't move if a larger person sat down next to me

Not even if you were literally falling off your seat?

When we don't have space to sit, we stand, yes. It's good to burn off calories too.

Afreshstartplease · 28/03/2017 09:42

I hate it when people half sit on me on the train! I'm small and TBH it's fucking intimidating

GreenPeppers · 28/03/2017 09:42

80smum but then about 1/4 of the population could sit in those because they wood be too tight so there would be screams of discrimination against people who are overweight....

ShiroiKoibito · 28/03/2017 09:44

I sit on the end seat, but then there is as some say, I spill slightly in no the gangway.

if you spill out on an end seat, then what happens on a middle seat?

(i dont like being touched by strangers in any way at all)

EastMidsMummy · 28/03/2017 09:47

What's the op to do then, stand for the duration of the journey?

Yes. Sitting down all the time probably got him to this place in the first place.
