I never ever post in AIBU but I have just watched newsnight and could not believe my eyes when going through tomorrow's front pages of the newspapers.

I don't read said publication so will not post a direct link, but will leave this here instead:

I thought it might be some kind of a joke. Nope. AIBU to think first Shock then AngryAngry

"Are women not allowed to feel attractive now?"

"Even if they want to?"

"Are the feminists telling us we are not allowed?"

Really? Is that what you're taking away from this?
I haven't seen any feminists telling women what to wear on this thread, quite the opposite in fact.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 12:52

I think passing comment on someones appearance is different to raping them.

I have commented on Trumps Tangerine tendencies, but never raped him.

squishysquirmy · 28/03/2017 12:53

And wtf would someone post a link about young shirtless Trudeau, to a guardian article which doesn't contain a photo of young shirtless Trudeau? Grin
Mean.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 12:54

Really? Is that what you're taking away from this?

Yes

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 12:57

Could I dress up in a banana costume and walk down the street and expect nobody to pass comment. No

Could I do the same and expect not to be raped? I bloody well hope so.

squishysquirmy · 28/03/2017 12:58

Which feminists are telling women what to wear Nippy? On this thread?
I don't know whether Vine identifies as a feminist or not, but when she's not shaming women for how they look, she spends much of her time blaming feminism for the world's problems.

Megatherium · 28/03/2017 13:03

According to a Katie Hopkins type person on Radio 4, it's ok because dressing as they do will attract comments

FFS. It's bog-standard business attire, to be seen in offices and on the streets in business areas everywhere. If I choose to wear a smart skirt or dress, do I have to assume that I will "attract comments" and just suck it up?

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:07

There has been an accusatory tone on this thread about women wearing heels and skirts.

Questions like:

Why can't women just wear trousers?

Why can women not just be confident enough to wear flat shoes?

That in itself amounts to societal pressure not to express yourself however you wish.

I can wear whatever I like and will not be judged for it by the people I care about. I would not give a shit about the views of the tabloids if I was PM. Do I think it is petty if people are judged on appearance? Yes, but it happens to men too. It happens less often because they have less freedom in what they wear, societal pressure stops them being able to express themselves in a business environment.

Never considered the state of Sarah Vine's legs before - not her worst attribute to be fair. I am a bit of an admirer of her DH's taste in lounge shoes even if his schoolboy geekchic makes it very difficult to take anything he says seriously.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:13

I am a bit of an admirer of her DH's taste in lounge shoes

Totally

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:19

I need to be able to talk about Nicola Sturgeons clothes.

I hate her so much I need to have something nice to say if someone tries to speak to me about her.

Perhaps this was the problem.

Is Vine anti brexit anti Scoxit?

perhaps their legs was all she had left that was positive about them.

AmberNectarine · 28/03/2017 13:25

The analogy is meant to demonstrate that the women shouldn't be blamed for the actions of the ignorant.

Why the fuck shouldn't they wear a skirt to work?

When I go to a meeting, I don't expect the minutes to include a commentary on my outfit even though it would be fucking great

Gottagetmoving · 28/03/2017 13:25

It did say 'lighthearted' on the cover. Even so, it is ridiculous to even talk about their bloody legs!

Capricorn76 · 28/03/2017 13:26

The diversion worked just like Trumps tweets which are used as cover for President Bannon's latest crazy policies.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:32

If it had said they were a couple of ugly sods and zoomed in on occasional chin hairs I would have thought it was nasty.

There is nothing wrong with having legs. There was no substance to the meeting and it was even in the most boring chain hotel in the world.

All that was left was legs and outfits,

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:34

I am partial to Russel and Bromley myself.

I am disappointed that my footwear does not interest the masses, but then I am not the PM.

As she has said before, the interest only gives her an excuse to buy more :)

Riversleep · 28/03/2017 13:39

Eh? Those suits are buttoned up to the neck, and they have knee length skirts on! I thought they looked very professional. Why should women have to wear trousers to be taken seriously?

howabout · 28/03/2017 13:39

No-one needs an excuse to buy more shoes surely Smile I am just saddened that I have so few opportunities to show off my R&B rainbow snakeskin stiletto ankle boots these days.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:42

Wow howabout!!!!!

They sound AWESOME!!!!

Ladydepp · 28/03/2017 13:44

Thanks @drjane, I have complained too.

I try to stay chilled out about most of the sexist shit that is flung around, but this is a front page of a national newspaper with our two most senior politicians being reduced to body parts in a way that two men never would. Completely outrageous in this day and age.

viques · 28/03/2017 13:44

have just heard Sara Vine who wrote the piece interviewed on Radio 4' she said that she thinks there has been a "sense of humour failure" about this.

Really Sara? Is this just like the sense of humour failure women have when discussing pay inequality, when they are sexually harassed at work or in the street, when they find themselves squished up against the glass ceiling, when they compare the number of women in boardrooms, parliament, top tiers of management and senior judicial positions?

forgive me for not laughing Sara, I still don't see the joke........

howabout · 28/03/2017 13:45

They are but sadly every passing day they get closer to appropriation by my teenager.

rogueantimatter · 28/03/2017 13:50

Ruth Davidson has just tweeted a pic of her legs apparently. Grin

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:53

My shoes have been nicked by both of my daughters.

I don't know how many times I have drawn attention to the fact that men are often perved on or put down in the tabloids. It seems to be falling of deaf ears for some reason.

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 13:54

Where I am straight but I have a huge crush on Ruth Davidson. Going away to google it NOW!!!!
