I never ever post in AIBU but I have just watched newsnight and could not believe my eyes when going through tomorrow's front pages of the newspapers.

I don't read said publication so will not post a direct link, but will leave this here instead:

I thought it might be some kind of a joke. Nope. AIBU to think first Shock then AngryAngry

BakeOff since it is a very depressing affair to be a Scotland supporter I usually end up supporting Italy in the football because they have the nicest legs. I am not aware of having my legs perved at every time I wear a skirt. It does concern me that women are sexualising legs in the way you have just done and this is being conveyed to my 3 DDs.

I took my two kids to the shop to look at the DM front page on the way home from School.
I asked them if they knew what sexism was. They both looked blank.
(ds, 12, dd, 10)

So, I explained that these were the two leaders of two countries meeting to discuss a hugely important political move and that the newspaper had shown them as two pairs of legs and invited the readers to decide whose were nicest.
Both kids thought it was bizarre and stupid.

Then I bought them some crisps and we went home, discussing Pokémon.

Ok howabout, I'm sorry you're concerned about my sexualisation of legs but maybe your concern is not quite directed to the correct place.

I think the issue is more about belittling female politicians by focusing on how they look more than what they say. Perving would not be my first thought when discussing the DM's attitude to 2 powerful middle aged women.

They have said "Oh get life", yes, really they actually said that

I heard that on the radio. I can't really believe they said that. It's a massive fuck you to people who have called them out on this.

It's incredibly disrespectful.

Fair enough to enjoy people watching in private. For most people it's a natural thing to do.

Completely inappropriate for front page headline about the PM and the Scottish FM. Also it's lazy.

Confused I wholehearted agree with you. My 'perving' comment was in quotes, because I was replying to others who had used it and said there was nothing wrong with it as women perved over men.

men's legs aren't "perved" over

really? Why have I spent years watching rugby then?

There was some bloody woman reporter ( not the Fail) on the radio this morning claiming that it was actually Ok because both women have appeared in fashion magazines and use clothes to help their success
Utter bollocks - the article talks about their legs rather than clothes

On the subject of their legs... Theresas may be a little older, but much longer. Interestingly they were also a little paler than nikkis, but in some photos nikkis tights were a little wrinkly on the knee :(

epic fail. Knee baggage is never the way to go.

have just heard Sara Vine who wrote the piece interviewed on Radio 4' she said that she thinks there has been a "sense of humour failure" about this.

I heard that. Though tbf we all know Sarah Vine must have a terrific sense of humour to get through her daily life being married to the Gove without slitting her wrists.

"sense of humour failure"

yes I think so

I wonder if she was asked to write that article or did she call Dacre and say that she had a great headline 'Forget Brexit, here's legs it' and then write an article about the female politician's legs.

I suspect she called Dacre.

Gosh, then I'm also lacking a sense of humour!

Oh well, happy to be humourless and critical of the world around me than blandly sitting back and criticising women's legs. Shudder.

But OK for women to drool all over Justin Trudeau, or ridicule Trump/Boris for their physical appearance?

We should start celebrating Sarah Vine for what she is most famous for #obseletepolitician'swife

The Mail

The tabloid newspaper remained defiant. A spokesperson for the Daily Mail said: “For goodness sake, get a life! Sarah Vine’s piece, which was flagged as light-hearted, was a side-bar alongside a serious political story. It appeared in an 84-page paper packed with important news and analysis, a front-page exclusive on cost-cutting in the NHS and a health supplement devoted to women’s health issues

But it was only flagged as light hearted AFTER it started being called out on Twitter.

Sarah Vine is playing an important role in keeping Michael Gove off the market . Gove was in my year at Oxford and the rumours surrounding his private life then did not show him in a good light.

Love this - I vote for all the SNP Gents to don their kilts for PMQs tomorrow - may even hold out some hope for Angus Robertson to talk a bit of sense with his knobbly knees on show.
