I never ever post in AIBU but I have just watched newsnight and could not believe my eyes when going through tomorrow's front pages of the newspapers.

I don't read said publication so will not post a direct link, but will leave this here instead:

I thought it might be some kind of a joke. Nope. AIBU to think first Shock then AngryAngry

I feel like there's something they don't want people to think about or notice; I just cant' quite work out what

Is this headline a 'dead cat' ?

"It can't be misogyny if it's 'light-hearted!' Where's your sense of humour?"

How are we still having to deal with this shit?

BakeOff, of course one can't discount that entirely, but surely you can see why I might be suspicious – and yes, ego and squishy, I have to wonder whether it's a dead cat strategy.

Well said. Why indeed do so many professional women feel the need to have bare legs/low cut blouses? This is a very serious question. I absolutely support the right of women and men to wear whatever they like in principle but I wish they would/could have the confidence to just shove on a shirt and trousers like professional men do. And flatter shoes that don't risk damaging your back and feet

Yeah I mean ffs why don't we all just wear a bhurka?

Some women like to express themselves with our clothing. It is lucky we are able to. Mens options are limited.

Why don't men wear skirts, with shaved legs, tights and uncomfortable, damaging shoes? That is the question. Why do women still feel the need to do this?

Why don't men wear bhurkas?

It 's definitely House if I replace my "Diet Coke advert" square with a "well the tabloids pervert on Prince William in a sarong" square.

Can you just imagine what they'd do if Merkel, Sturgeon and May got together to discuss Brexit and Scotland?

It would fuck Paul Dacre's mind to see 3 powerful women together discussing the future of Europe, Scotland etc.

What are professional women wearing skirts and high heels expressing?

Btw, for the avoidance of doubt, I am a woman.

Lots of women also wear flat shoes etc. You can do this if you don't want the mail to perv on you.

If you don't care what the mail says because you think they are trash then you dress like May.

drjane, can I ask on what grounds you're complaining?

I've complained to IPSO in the past and been told that they can't consider it because the thing I was complaining about doesn't break any of their codes.

Women who wear anything are expressing their own style.

Perhaps they feel that heels make them look taller and more important or sexy or mature or some heels are quirky, some are fashionable, some match their outfit?

Trying to make us all conform to your feminist agenda is not freedom at all.

rogueantimatter · 28/03/2017 10:35

Good point Nippy

But if you don't care what anyone thinks why go to the trouble and discomfort of wearing a skirt/dress, shave legs, high heels.?

I just wish more women, especially leaders, had the confidence to not feel the need to go to more trouble than men when they're dressing and not feel the need to uncover their bodies in a way that the vast majority of men don't.

t because the thing I was complaining about doesn't break any of their codes

There should really be a code for unbelievable sexism that doesn't belong in the 21st century.

This is beside the point and shouldn't have to be said, but:
They weren't wearing short, or "revealing" skirts. They were wearing normal length skirts and sitting down. Sitting down makes skirts and trousers ride up. That's why similar photos of male politicians sitting down show their socks, even when they are wearing very well fitted, expensive suits.
Unless their socks are odd, or feature cartoon characters I can't imagine a situation where they would be commented on.

Women can't win if paper decides to focus on their appearance:
Wear trousers: "unflattering" "Shows off her bum"
Wears a long skirt: "frumpy" "old" "scruffy"
Wears a shorter (but not short!) skirt: This.
Wears a short skirt: risks visible underwear when sitting down surrounded by photographers, which the dm would be sure to print.

nippy Heels make them look taller or more important or sexy or mature Why would a confident person be bothered about any of those things? They don't need to prove their worth by the way they dress.
