Is this the most sexist front page ever?

I never ever post in AIBU but I have just watched newsnight and could not believe my eyes when going through tomorrow's front pages of the newspapers.

I don't read said publication so will not post a direct link, but will leave this here instead:

I thought it might be some kind of a joke. Nope. AIBU to think first Shock then AngryAngry

I think their legs are lovely pmsl... Lets face it, it's the first time lately any politician would brave it in the arctic north without wooly trousers!!!

better than talking politics atm Grin

(ofcourse it is sexist, however if a male politician with reasonable legs wandered around in shorts, they would get the same. I recall articles about Cameron and Cleg in shorts I think. SO THE QUESTION IS is it sexist or just pervy)

For fucks sake. Tell me again how we don't need feminism?

Oh really UpAwf?? When Clegg & Cameron had important political meetings with Alex Salmond, the front page of the highest circulation newspaper in the country focused on their legs?

Really??

Do you have evidence for this?

It's not the same as a pap photo on a holiday - Sturgeon & May were doing serious stuff. Not that you'd know it from that front page.

But TM and NS are not in shorts, if they were the DM may have a point.
But they are dressed in normal business wear!

Not a fucking chance would an important meeting between two male politicians end up with this headline.

If Cameron and Clegg were wearing shorts and having a few pints in a pub, maybe there would be comments.

But

If Cameron and Clegg were wearing appropriate business attire at a meeting, no there wouldn't.

I think you are right, but the fact is the tabloids are a pervy bunch really. always have been and not only towards women.

Ridiculous! It's like it doesn't matter what position they've got to in life, how successful a woman can be, how respected she can be by colleagues, etc, etc, let's have a gander at how lovely or otherwise her legs are. This is politics, not a beauty contest. Pathetic doesn't cover it, does it?

UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 09:54

Our idea of appropriate business attire for men leaves a bit too much to the imagination for tabloid perving.

I think I remember prince William being perved by the tabloids carrying out important business abroad (wearing a sarong?)

Report
UpAwfYerSeatWeeNippy · 28/03/2017 09:55

I think the tabloids should cut out the perving.

In case people missed it, The Daily Mail won Newspaper of the Year last year.

Was it for its coverage of the Duchess of Cambridge's appearance?
For its policing of women in the sidebar of shame
Or for its extensive and detailed coverage of national politics as shown by the headline we're discussing here?

Report

It's a deliberately manipulative diversion tactic.

Mail readers are being constantly manipulated by the DM to believe what it's fascist controllers want them to believe.

Focus on the little women's legs sheep then you won't think about the reality of what is happening in this country.

Apparently it was altered in later editions

"Later editions of the paper appeared to attempt to water down the editorial line, describing it on the front as: “Sarah Vine’s light-hearted verdict on the big showdown”"

Newspaper of the year FGS!!!

Now that is more shocking than the perving itself!

it is demeaning and that is the purpose

no surprise Sarah Vine is behind this article, bitter that Theresa May is the PM the position her husband aimed for but failed fantastically at

Two of the most powerful people in the country (well one is the other certainly holds a position of great power and isn't that something to celebrate) discussing issues that impact all our futures is dragged down to such a disgraceful sexist level - I should ignore it but I can't as it simply would not be happening if two men were sitting there and highlights how many people still hate that women are in powerful positions

sadly I have fallen in to the DM trap of getting angry they want to anger feminists so they can say look hysterical woman making a fuss over nothing, but it hasn't only angered those who identify as feminists it has angered many people because no matter what your politics are the majority respect the role Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May have and the pressure they are under

I agree that it wouldn't be happening if it was 2 men, unless they had nice legs and were wearing Kilts (which would only be right as it was Scotland)

Theresa May will ignore it and take it in her stride-You can't demean someone as important as the prime minister. Nicola will be offended of course- Victim complex.

I'm wondering what their agenda is.

I mean beyond the simple male chauvinism thing.

The Mail has been missing no opportunity to froth about Brexit (remember 'Enemies of the People'?) and today is the day before Article 50. So why are they not frothing/crowing about that?

I feel like there's something they don't want people to think about or notice; I just cant' quite work out what.

Well said. Why indeed do so many professional women feel the need to have bare legs/low cut blouses? This is a very serious question. I absolutely support the right of women and men to wear whatever they like in principle but I wish they would/could have the confidence to just shove on a shirt and trousers like professional men do. And flatter shoes that don't risk damaging your back and feet.

If it had been cropped it would be a good picture. Serious but fairly neutral faces, similar but different poses.

Feel sorry for the photographer their skill has been reduced to this shitty headline.

Yes Saphire, it's almost like someone wants to distract us from the harsh realities: "Don't look at that! Look over there! LEGS!!!!!"
