I never ever post in AIBU but I have just watched newsnight and could not believe my eyes when going through tomorrow's front pages of the newspapers.

I don't read said publication so will not post a direct link, but will leave this here instead:

They are talking about it on Radio 4 now.

I'm absolutely outraged. I was already sick to the back teeth of the persistent commentary on what Theresa May is wearing today.

So who do we complain to? I'm just in the mood for penning an appropriate complaint.

Even more insulting is the fact that they didn't use that headline on the Scottish edition.

So only the people of England and Wales are trapped in the 1950s, apparently.

Well that may well be true I suppose.

Nice editorial diversion of what really matters about that meeting. People will laugh or be offended talking about THAT image whilst what really happened in this political encounter (e.g. nothing which is in itself significant) is pushed under the rug. Bastards.

Shock horror: women have legs and sometimes they don't totally cover them up! OH MY GOD.

I thought the Daily Mail had learnt from this episode about the effects of objectifying politicians.

Is this the most sexist front page ever?

According to the Telegraph journalist, it's ok because both of them have appeared in Vogue so this is ok Hmm She also said it was the kind of argument that sets back feminism years and that the papers do it to Corbyn so it's ok then Hmm

No surprise Sarah Vine was involved.

According to a Katie Hopkins type person on Radio 4, it's ok because dressing as they do will attract comments Hmm

Also they have both "posed" in Vogue so they are inviting comments on thier appearance Hmm

And finally, it's people making a fuss about this headline who give feminists their bad name Hmm

As someone else said, welcome to the 1950s.

The original link isn't from the source it's from the Daily Mali as in West Africa.
The subheading originally said 'It wasn't quite heels at dawn but there was a distinctly frosty atmosphere when Theresa May met Nicola Sturgeon yesterday'

It just seems like they've gone backwards several decades, so all that matters is that they've got their legs out?!

This would never have been done with two male leaders.

Add to this, and Mother's Day was a whole hour shorter than Father's Day will be. I'm well angry.

Just remember that Sarah Vine is married to Michael Gove. That tells you all you need to know about her judgement.

Well if neither woman cared/it doesn't matter etc etc.... Why the hell did they both choose skirts for this day? Lets ask ourselves why women even still dress this way? What's wrong with trousers? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's anything inherently wrong with women's bodies BUT men don't choose to show off their legs, wear jewellery/makeup etc. so why do we? Why does society still expect it of women and why do we collude? Lets think about that, the elephant in the room.

I haven't read the thread yet. Can I make some predictions?

  1. It's just a bit of fun
  2. But they do have nice legs.
  3. You're just jealous because your legs aren't as nice.
  4. The legs arn't all that anyway
  5. some reference to the Diet Coke ad
6)Haven't we/you/they got more important things to worry about
  6. Some reference to women in the Middle East
  7. Possibly a suggestion that if they don't want pictures like this they should wear longer skirts (although that would be real vintage Bingo material)

Interesting that the Scottish edition was different. Oh well makes a change from comments about how ugly NS is which we hear a lot. Also thoroughly sick of the whole shebang. Women are damned of they do (as here) , damned if they don't (called frumpy, boring etc) dress up to "perform" femininity. I opted out but as a lawyer that was not really remarked on - you weren't supposed to be too flamboyant anyway and skirts and heels are too uncomfortable for a proper job anyway.

Thinking about it...

Yes, this is sexist crap. But at least it's obvious sexist crap.

I think I'm a lot more bothered by insidious sexist crap like anything written by Paris Lees or on Everyday Feminism, which is misogyny disguised as liberalism.
