I note that there has been no reply to the police officer on here.

portia I doubt there will be a reply. I have private life insurance policies as I know how little my family will get if I die whilst in service.

I haven't donated as yet but I don't care what the family spends it on if it just brings them a small amount of comfort or makes financial life a tad easier.

Not to mention that widowers/widows lose the pension should they remarry or cohabit (although I'm not sure if that has changed yet as Christine Fulton was heading a campaign to change that and I can't remember if it was successful)

Nick I thought the Police wouldn't pay as much as a million but couldn't comment on that because I didn't have the information to back any comment up
Aside from that I'm sorry you've had too read such a lot of tripe but most of us appreciate our police officers and emergency services so please keep on doing what you're doing. Sad that your colleague didn't go home because of a terrorist and can't begin to think how his wife must feel.

portia I think it's heartening as to how much the support the police have received. I find posters on mumsnet can be quite harsh towards police officers but this highlights the job we/they do.

I'm trying to remember the terms of my police life insurance and hopefully other colleagues can help but I think my family get about 80k from my life insurance and each officer pays £1 from a months pay which probably comes to about £15000. Then my monthly pension which I'm not sure how much that equals.

I would be very, very surprised if families receive any more than the terms of their employment.

'I hadn't seen that theyve been left high and dry.'

They are/were self-employed. And you know what, I don't really care what their circumstances are because right now it looks pretty shit! That man was flung off the car some 20+ feet onto the pavement like a piece of litter, to die, with people around seeing that and trying to help. His widow is seriously injured in hospital, I doubt she'll be dancing round any time soon. And they had children, too. I know how it works there, I'm from there. She needs every penny she can get.

Mrs Fade was apparently struck and flung under a fucking bus, her daughters were waiting for her to collect them at school. She never did. I hope to able to give something to help her family and if I haven't got two farthings to rub together, hell, I'll find a fucking farthing and give it to her family.

That officer died in a pool of his own blood on the stones. I'm happy to give anything I can to his family, too.

FUCK anyone who tells me I'm wrong for doing that.

tired, THANK YOU! Pay no mind to haters, they are NOT the majority.

Thank you expat, and what a great post.

portia Dont take my figures as gospel as I'm guilty of not having looked at is recently as you don't like to think of your death, you know? But certainly my husband was concerned at the lack of financial cover in the event of my death that we have taken external policies to make life easier. He is more a forward planner than me!

Doyou Thank you. I can't lie, these deaths really get to me. It's just a job and one you know the risks but doesn't really occur to you that it may happen. Particularly when Nicola Huges and Fiona Bone where murdered as I can imagine clearly attending a call like that.

"If they need long term care in the states the NHS won't be paying then will it?"

No, they won't. She will be repatriated as soon as possible, only emergency care is covered under treaty and by whatever travel insurance she has. She will be repatriated and this expense billed to her first, which she has to reclaim from any travel insurance she has, a long and drawn out process. IF she has medical insurance in the US, and as they were both self-employed, that's a big if and even in the positive that insurance will be limited, she will likely need further care and treatment and likely not be able to work for some time. On top of repatriating her husband's remains. This is not as simple as 'Okay, let it go, he's dead' particularly as he was murdered. This I learned from a British friend whose husband died from natural causes in mainland Europe. It cost A LOT. The remains had to be released by both European and British doctors, two death certificates, and that can be tricky when the cause of death is not natural. Such remains are not released quickly. The family is even charged for the storage of such remains in some cases.

And then there are those who are injured. They were from different nationalities, this is known.

You really have to wonder about those who begrudge any funding for such victims. It says a lot about them, but thankfully, given the level of donations, not about who we are in the UK.

Do so many people helped us when my daughter was ill, from here, and during her final illness and following her death. Her wake was an MN meetup! I'll never forget it! The MNers were out in force! And yes, we even had some haters. We did, not just us but a very lovely MNer who is a second mother to my daughter. Taylor Swift put it best, 'Shake it off!'

I give of my own free will, and hope to do so to Ms Fade's family, too. I saw her mother's face on telly, standing next to the town's mayor as her child's murder was announced.

If I can do anything to make it smoother, glad to do so!

Sadly this is the label he and his handlers would give him. So-called-muslim with a small M.

I've heard that there are conspiracy theories already that this was a hoax. Ffs. What a world.

I wish the media would actually stop using the word Islamic or Muslim with terrorist. It gives the terrorists a cause and something to hide behind to justify their actions.

As Brendan Cox said he doesn't blame Yorkshire just because the bastard who killed her came from Yorkshire.

Just say the terrorist. No Muslim no Islam no Hindu or Christian, right wing or left wing.. just terrorist
