Three pairs of pants is NOT enough... is it??

Adunni · 22/03/2017 13:00

Noticed there were hardly ever pairs of DP's pants in the wash basket, so I bought him a pack that looked comfy and were reasonably priced, and put them in his underwear drawer.

When I mentioned I'd done this he said, "Oh, you didn't need to do that - I already have three pairs."

I press him on this and he says that, 'as [he's] not a woman', he doesn't need to change his pants every day and three pairs is plenty.

As in he literally own three pairs. In total.

He's been wearing them in rotation and if I'd have to estimate I'd say that unless I forcibly liberate them from his Floor Closet (that's a rant for another day) they aren't getting washed more than once every two weeks.

Am I being precious or is this just... eughh???!!

That is grim. Does he change his socks more often?

ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2017 14:27

I don't get why anyone would do this. Underpants don't take up that much room in a drawer. A few more pairs makes a negligible difference to a load of laundry. Maybe it was 'more work for mum' in the days of no washing machines and longjohns but it really isn't nowadays.

Som DP's may have a problem using a laundry basket. The solution to that is to observe where they drop their dirty keks and put an extra basket there. Grin

DaisyQueen · 22/03/2017 14:31

errol my Oh sheds his dirty clothes in whatever room he is. I've never understood the male aversion to the laundry basket. At least he leaves the dirty ones where they fall and puts clean ones on though Grin

MrsPeelyWaly · 22/03/2017 14:34

OP, you cannot possibly get into bed with such a pig.

SoAngryArghh · 22/03/2017 14:34

That is revolting!! My DH changes his pants twice a day! Morning and then evening when gets back from work. Often showers twice a day too. I also change twice a day. Each morning and each evening - although shower only once a day. (Therefore clean pants on overnight and during the day). I guess some people don't wear pants over night so might just change once a day?

Panetulipani · 22/03/2017 14:38

Oh dear. It is making me itch just thinking about it. Yeast infections? Bacterial skin problems? Excess smelly/spotty/sweatiness in the general vicinity of his crotch? Does he do the same thing with his trousers? I think I might replace the pants with multiple additional pairs and just throw out the old ones. My own OH probably owns more underwear than I do as he is fussy about always having enough pants and socks clean for the week, especially if he is going to be working away from home, or we are going on holiday. Three pairs would definitely not be enough.

TwentyCups · 22/03/2017 14:41

Eewww. I can't imagine washing then putting my dirty pants back on!!

Endmoor1405 · 22/03/2017 14:43

My DH declared he didn't need any more than three pairs on account of the fact that he's sure I can wash them fast enough that he doesn't run out.

He promptly asked for some new ones when I "accidentally" didn't put an underwear load on for a few days... I have millions of knickers Grin

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/03/2017 14:45

" 'as [he's] not a woman', he doesn't need to change his pants every day and three pairs is plenty."
Well 'as a man' - or indeed as any human - he sweats, his skin cells rub off onto his clothing and he farts. Hopefully he does not leave skidmarks (or is this his criteria for moving them out of rotation and into the washing basket?).

His pants cover an area where a lot of skin is enclosed into a small volume (his crotch) , all of it radiating heat, which tends to encourage sweating. Part of the function of pants is to soak up that sweat so that the damp skin does not chafe. So fuck me if they don't need changed daily! Bleurgh! Grin

PickAChew · 22/03/2017 14:46

After that long, they won't want washing, they'll want burning!

Renaissance2017 · 22/03/2017 14:50

More skid marks than the M25....

unlucky83 · 22/03/2017 14:53

DP often goes commando but does own a few pairs of pants. (he does his own washing so not sure how often he washes them...)

He keeps his 'clean enough to wear again' clothes on hooks on the back of the bedroom door....the other day I noticed a pair of his pants hanging there...I asked him what they were doing there and he said he'd only worn them for a few hours one day so could wear them again Shock
I really struggle not to put clean pants on after a shower ....even if I have only been wearing them for 30 mins (I put my 'scruffs' on first thing if I am at home for the morning - to do cleaning etc - then get washed and dressed properly later). I couldn't contemplate keeping worn pants for a day or so to wear again...I just couldn't.
But to keep them hanging on the back of the door...my brain exploded.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 22/03/2017 14:54

How on earth have you not noticed until now? Is it not deeply revolting getting near his tackle?

Bleurgh.

If he didn't change his extremely manky ways immediately it would be a deal breaker for me. Just no way would I be having sex with someone so grim.

morningconstitutional2017 · 22/03/2017 15:06

When I first saw the headline I thought you were referring to my very elderly MIL who insists very staunchly that three pairs is enough. She washes them in the kitchen sink by hand and leaves them on display over the radiator to dry. They can be clearly seen peeking behind her chair during each visit.

But really, ohtheroses you iron his underpants? No way would I do that. And spaghettithrower it's non-negotiable and I told him so - I love your attitude on this.
The old saying, 'underwear worn twice isn't nearly so nice' definitely comes into play here.

kwick · 22/03/2017 15:06

That is so sad @spaghettithrower but I am so glad you have shown your DP there is a better way!

@Deathraystare why would anyone EVER admit to this! your case must have been a tad boring

KoolKoala07 · 22/03/2017 15:11

Yuk! Who doesn't change their underwear after every bath/shower/wash?!

Auntymildred · 22/03/2017 15:14

Truly grim - the very idea of putting worn pants on after a shower is revolting. Is he also wearing them in bed overnight to minimise changing them?

My DP also does the "clean enough to wear goes on the back of the door" which means a clothes avalanche every time I open the door and moths eating his jumpers.

SurlyValentine · 22/03/2017 15:20

DP has many, many pairs of pants and socks. Some not in the best state of repair (apparently they're the comfiest though so he can't throw them away Hmm ) but he does have many pairs, and each pair is only worn once before being washed.

Mine is the other extreme. Cotton lawn boxers x at least 25/30 and he likes them ironed and folded a certain way. Kept in his drawer in neat piles of five. All in shades of blue, with or without a pattern. His socks have to be folded too; black for work usually browny at weekends. Don't get me onto the handkerchiefs.

Negative Ghostrider, the pattern is full. He'd be doing that shit all by himself.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/03/2017 15:22

Yuk and I am not exactly queen of hygiene. why would he rotate them and not wash them I literally cant understand. Does he rotate sides too (boak)

My dp has pant categories work pants and exercise relaxing pants, he sometimes saves pants on the side of the bed (big wooden drawer containing bedframe) possibly so he can put on them on in the morning/ evening for exercise then put clean pants on after his shower? I am not sure what the system is so there is some weird saving of pants going on here too but this system still involves 1 or 2 cleanly washed clean pairs a day I think

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/03/2017 15:38

Unless you do laundry daily 3 pairs is not enough. I'd guess DH has at least a dozen. I probably have 50+. He doesn't have to worry about vpl or colour matching.

WyfOfBathe · 22/03/2017 15:49

I was told by a crazy eccentric scout leader that when you go hiking you should save space in your rucksack by wearing each pair of pants four times (right way, backward, right way through, inside out). I've heard it as a joke before, but I'm fairly sure he was being serious. Maybe your DH was in his unit OP Grin?

TheNaze73 · 22/03/2017 15:52

Bloody grim. Has he know self pride?

grannytomine · 22/03/2017 15:59

This is what spoils Jack Reacher books for me. When he buys a new outfit and throws his old clothes away I always want him to buy an extra pair of underpants and socks. I'm reading the story and trying to keep track of how many days he's had this same stuff on.

I realise that is totally irrelevant unless your husband's name is Jack Reacher, probably not as he only has one pair.

RB68 · 22/03/2017 16:13

oh Grim - buy him 7 pairs labelled Monday to Sunday and make him change if he is on the wrong day - disgusting little boy!!

JaneEyre70 · 22/03/2017 16:19

My DH has got OCD, and he is a nightmare with clothes....they have to "feel" right for him to wear, and 99.5% of what he buys gets taken back. I flat out refuse to buy him anything. He wears the same pants, same socks, same jeans, same shirts as he has always bought....and won't contemplate something "new" as he genuinely gets agitated. I refuse to enable him in this by washing every day as I would need to do keep up with his lack of choices, but he does wear clean underwear every day without fail. He's knows I'd leave him if he didnt!
