To think people can afford holidays/nice things if they just save?

I have a friend who constantly complains that she wished she could go on holiday, buy this, have money for that etc.

She has a decent job, a nice house, doesn't need/want for anything, she probably eats takeaway 2 times a week (maybe 3) I see this as a waste of money

let's say that's 15 each go, 30/45 euros a week.... lately she's really been complaining and wishing for a holiday, surely if she just stopped having takeaways she'd be able to afford it.. a week in the sun isn't that expensive; book out of season, her and 1 young child possibly 500 total IF even for a week!..

I've said to her before, in a nice way, if you cut down on unnecessary costs you'll have extra in no time.

She's not unhealthy, she just loves pigging out!
Aibu to be annoyed by her constant giving out when I've told her?

In Ireland they are. dunno what the story is in the UK.

and in Ireland, students get a grant of a sh!tty amount of 150ish a MONTH for working hard in college, where people sitting on their arses get 180 a WEEK for doing nothing.

It's a nasty goady troll. Reported. Best ignore.

hungryhippo90 · 19/03/2017 17:35

Of course you are right.

She spends 45 euro a week on take aways! even if she cut back and allowed herself a supermarket ready meal on those nights instead she could save half of what she currently spends on take aways.

These things are luxuries, and if you cut back then you have excess money to save.

This is slightly different, but I suffer from anxiety, really bad anxiety that has been a black cloud over my life over the past several years.
It got so bad that I was spending £100 on taxis to take DD to and from school each week, plus £70 in childcare so I didnt have to face any other parents.

I set myself a goal. The goal was that I would stop doing the trips to the school in a taxi, and I would hop on my bike and get DD to school that way. It was so bloody hard, but my motivation was that every time I managed it, I had £10 to pay towards my holiday.

In multiples of £10 I saved, through the freezing rain I had that comfort to cling to. Bearing in mind, I was 19 odd stone, and obviously struggling with the physical exertion (id not been out of the house on my own for years and fitness had depleted) but I got there.
Every time I felt like giving up and getting a taxi, I reminded myself that doing the god awful school run meant that I would be able to take my daughter on holiday.

I got there, and it actually set me up in better habits, my mental health still isnt where it should be, but I now know I am strong enough to leave the house....and Ive got a trip to dread look forward to!

Sorry ive gotten carried away with my little success story, BUT my point is that cutbacks can be made, and even saving relatively small amounts can make a huge difference in the long run

Points have you read Anne's posts?

You sound like a nasty little arse.

How fucking insensitive and rude.

ZilphasHatpin · 19/03/2017 17:36

Why do we consider acceptable to give money to people who chose not to work, I will never know.

Who is choosing not to work?

user1488487346 · 19/03/2017 17:37

No i haven't read anyones posts.... why would I read/ or have an exception for someone.

OP posts:
ZilphasHatpin · 19/03/2017 17:38

Because it would involve considering someone else's position and thick goady bastards just don't know how to do that.

Oswin · 19/03/2017 17:38

Nc fail there op?

SparkleTwinkleGoldGlitter · 19/03/2017 17:39

So it's turned in to a benefits bashing thread, nice work OP that was quick!

Dawndonnaagain · 19/03/2017 17:39

So getting a sum of money each week without you earning it isn't getting money handed to you?
I do earn my benefits thank you very much. I work seven days a week, and usually somewhere around an eighteen hour day. I have no holidays. I couldn't take holidays even if I could save.

phoenixtherabbit · 19/03/2017 17:39

I'm not sure being on benefits is a choice for a lot of people....

ilovesooty · 19/03/2017 17:40

I simply don't believe that bullshit about people sitting on their arse and collecting £180 a week for doing nothing.

user1488487346 · 19/03/2017 17:40

no one told anne she should of been able to save, please stop jumping t conclusions.

she gathered from my title that i said oh everyone no matter what definitely has money to save.

my post, people can afford nice things if they just save, how can they save if they don't have disposable income? its aimed at people WHO CAN save.

OP posts:
Dawndonnaagain · 19/03/2017 17:41

I do completely agree with you. Why do we consider acceptable to give money to people who chose not to work, I will never know.
Well, it's obvious that you'll never know. You believe it, ergo you can't be arsed to look into it properly. Bloody nonsense.

pointstaken · 19/03/2017 17:42

Bullshit!

You are so lucky if you've never experienced that, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen to other people.

user1488487346 · 19/03/2017 17:43

Excuse me? you don't believe it? ask anyone from ireland

it's called the dole.

If you don't work, if you're 18 the minute you turn 18 you get 100 euro if not in school or work, for sitting doing nothing... every week, 100 euro in your pocket

if over 23, not in school or work, you get 180 /188 euro once a week..

with kids, you get all sorts.. similar to what you have in the uk, benefit.

OP posts:
user1488487346 · 19/03/2017 17:44

people are getting confused here, the girl who said she works 7 days a week, of course you're earning your money, i'm on about people who don't work at all and still get a good wage from the government each week.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 19/03/2017 17:44

So do tell us more about these people choosing not to work and sitting on their arses having £180 a week handed to them...

Annesmyth123 · 19/03/2017 17:44

I couldn't get a job. I was looking. I did get one and I have one now but I couldn't get a job instantly.

Some of you have no idea of what the reality of life is like for the other half. Literally. No. Idea.

hungryhippo90 · 19/03/2017 17:45

Annesmyth. hope life looks up for you soon. x

pointstaken · 19/03/2017 17:45

You believe it, ergo you can't be arsed to look into it properly. Bloody nonsense.

I just happen to open my eyes and am unlucky enough to have prime examples close to me. You can deny everything you want, it doesn't mean it does not happen. Or maybe I am surrounded by the national exemptions, and they system is only abused around me. Yes, that makes sense.

Next thing we know ,you are going to pretend that people on benefit can't afford holidays and never take any. ever. Yeah right.

ilovesooty · 19/03/2017 17:46

€180. No conditionality?

Annesmyth123 · 19/03/2017 17:46

So given that you're in Ireland and you have no clue about the benefits system in the uk, how the fuck do you know what it was like for me on benefits?

pointstaken · 19/03/2017 17:46

*exceptions, not exemptions!

ZilphasHatpin · 19/03/2017 17:47

Ooh let's all Move to Ireland. Sounds cushy there. All you have to do is be over 18 and you're sorted for life.
