To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

"We [the no voters] were a well behaved bunch last time. This time I am not so sure."
"I thin a lot of yes voters have very much misunderstood the calm and rational approach by no voters last time and will not like what they see this time round. I think emotions will run very very high."
" "a vote for yes is a vote for death"
Seeing as no Yes voters/SNP have declared they wish to kill/impose any sort of violence upon No voters/anybody, I can only assume, given what you have previously said, is that you think that disgruntled No voters will resort to deadly violence against Yes voters if any referendum vote doesnt go their way (which is probably in keeping with Unionist history). Or you could be speaking a load of shite

And yet independence tends to isolate professionals. It would be much harder to access training opportunities throughout the U.K., with separate countries. It's not like working in the next town.
cross fertilisation of ideas and methods are very helpful in raising standards.

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:38

I agree with you Tap. I have lived in this country on and off twelve years and feel very at home. I have had the odd slightly off English joke maybe once or twice in all that time. Stopped with a quizzical, raised eyebrow. I have never met anyone who was vehementlt anti 'white settlers' despite spending a lot of time in the highlands and islands. I do know the odd few exist. But I think they must be v rare - most of the people I know (including Gaels) have been nothing but welcoming. I have met far more English people with chips on their shoulders about Scots than vice versa!

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 22:39

It does seem a little unfair now on england not having their own parliment/s. It would be better to see everyone work together than to stoke up false divisoon surely? This is exactly why sturgeon needs to pipe down and stop stirring. We will all be much smaller and weaker if we don't work together.

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:40

A Council of the North was discussed minstrel. A shame it didn't go anywhere IMO

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/03/2017 22:40

And why is English devolution never discussed

That would have been a good solution last time around, and would have killed off independence. Each country to have it's own government, and then a central government in charge of things like foreign policy and defence. A full federal structure. Many (most?) Indy supporters would prefer this solution, but unfortunately it is not on the table.

Well! Heres your chance...

justnowords · 19/03/2017 22:41

I dont know, why isn't English devolution ever talked about. How dare NS not discuss English devolution. The selfish bitch. How fucking dare she not. Lets just ignore the fact that Scottish independence would remove all traces of Scotland from RoUK parliament, bringing only English votes for English laws one step closer.

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 22:41

We will all be much smaller and weaker if we don't work together

Sounds a familiar argument. Better together.

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:44

Good point Head. Most of my own work involves links with Nordic countries, so that's how I compare professional standards. But it must be hard if that's not the nature of your work. It is a concern for mates of mine in specialised areas of medicine

I have met them , 2 were SNP members. They didn't consider themselves racist. They were.

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 22:45

I hope they do get a vote. And when the results come in that they want to break away from us i wonder what the No voters will think then.

justnowords · 19/03/2017 22:46

I would probably vote for a federal union, only on the basis that the four countries had equal say on non federal matters (i.e. 25% vote each) otherwise it would just be England over ruling anything it disagreed with. What could be considered non federal. Defence probably.

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:47

Then I understand your concern Lass. That would scare me too. How would you deal with it? Tighter anti-hate laws? Police training? Having that argument out in public? I think NC is doing her best in the latest speech to be inclusive - hence the 'come join us' call. To me, that kind of framing is very welcome

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/03/2017 22:48

You have a crystal ball that knows what results would be. Wow

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:49

Minstrel is the First Minister of a parliament, not an assembly. So of course she demands more privileges - a parliament involves the transfer of far more powers than an assembly.

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 22:49

otherwise it would just be England over ruling anything it disagreed with

Or Tories overruling Labour areas. Southern MPs overruling Northern MPs.

In a Union of 60 odd million people - who gets to decide the views? Should Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have the same and equal say as England?

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 22:49

You know, i almost posted the very same thing yesterday about other posters :)

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/03/2017 22:49

If TM says all those that don't want independence can come join rUK I can imagine the reaction

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 22:50

I would hardly blame them given the rubbish spouted about English oppressors from the likes of that weegingerdug site and linked to here, with approbation, by one poster.

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 22:51

Sorry typo NC is the First Minister - not Whisky!

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 22:51

I think Europe should offer a 'come here' plea to people in the UK who want to stay in Europe.

Problem is - people are attached to their country. It's the way it's run that's the problem.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 22:54

I'm not sure if your reply to me re your misunderstanding of what constitutes racism is was sarcastic or not so I am not sure I want to answer this.

If by NC you mean a typo for Sturgeon- why on earth would join her in anything?

justnowords · 19/03/2017 22:54

Should Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have the same and equal say as England?
If each country was fully federalised other than defence, then yes, I believe each country should have the same and equal say (on defence) as each other. That would be a equal and fair union.

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 19/03/2017 22:55

I remember meeting one white settler type behind the counter at the baker's. Now I was young and naive about it all and I think like all bullies they pick their victims. If you present as a confident mature person you'll be far less likely to hear their opinions overtly ime.

Then there was the classic when a tremendously posh woman spoke ill about us English scum in French!!

It's sad but off course bigotry knows no borders.
