To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

Goodbye Flowers

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 19:21

Oh and yes devolved nations should not be allowed separatist governments Flowers

Nyx · 19/03/2017 19:22

Bye Gruffalo Biscuit

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 19:27

Bye Gruffalo Flowers I don't agree with your politics but would fight for your right to vote Conservative or anything else. Hope to see you again and no hard feelings.

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 19/03/2017 19:30

Er, the whiskeyposter said the English are racist..

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 19:35

Some English are. Same as some Scottish. Generalisations aren't helpful I know (sometimes it's hard not to generalise!)

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 19:41

I was born and raised in England, now living in Scotland after a 15 year spell in London. The deal was always that another indyref would be sought if the material case changed significantly - which it has. In fact, that was a manifest pledge. So NC has to stick to it. The UK govt has also failed to deliver any of the additional powers it promised to No voters.

I am not an SNP supporter, but I respect NC's position on this and think she has behaved with admirable maturity and self control. I would consider voting for Scottish independence, but we need to explore the economic plans for the future in detail first, so I don't mind a delayed vote.

I do consider myself British, so leaving would be a wrench. But my national identity matters less to me than whether or not I live in a country in which my taxes support the things I value. I dislike the far right politics and xenophobia currently dominating English politics intensely - I would prefer a Swedish model of government (high taxes, more inclusive, egalitarian society).

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 19/03/2017 19:42

Ah, don't know which page i was reading there but there was a post denying the blanket statement!

Tbh it's the sort of statement to be ignored along with the sad case who posts it.

As you were..

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 19:44

Good post ocelot. I agree with all but feel British after Scottish (never had a passport!)
I think the 18 months-2years to see what negotiations bring is important

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 19:45

The UK govt has also failed to deliver any of the additional powers it promised to No voters

I'm not sure that is the case. Holyrood doesn't use its powers anyway.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 19:53

Whisky2014

piglet it's clear from the brexit vote results by area that they are racist. Even TV interviews of the voters stating they didnt want them immigrants coming over here, stealing their jobs and cant speak English. The whole result was based on immigration and no one thought about what the bonus of being in the EU actually meant

Does that mean Mhairi Black is secretly racist? She said herself she had to hold her nose to vote remain because it is SNP policy but she is not personally in favour of the EU.

twattymctwatterson · 19/03/2017 19:56

Yes voter last time and swaying towards no this time so not some kind of rabid Nat but the very wording of your op displays the attitude which makes a lot of people want to vote yes. England is not the UK and Scotland is not property for England to "keep"

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 20:00

Lass. It is true. The UK government has gone back on the "vow" which G Brown helped to instigate. That's why he is being laughed at for proposing a third way again. It smacks of deja vu. Full disclosure: background as a political journalist covering Westminster. NC is not acting aggrieved over nothing

Redactio · 19/03/2017 20:06

I'm interested in why people think the vow was not delivered, personally I think it was. The fact is that the SG is more interested in a second indyref than using the powers that the Smith Commission gave them and they signed up to.
Obviously it suits the SNP agenda to claim that the Vow was not delivered, but in fact that is just another SNP lie (and one of many).

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 20:10

No, it means she is weak

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 20:12

Fair point Redaction, it is disputed. Some of the recommendations of the Smith commission did end up in the Scotland Act. My reading of it was that the legislation which was passed was a pretty watered down version of what was promised, esp on welfare issues. I am English and not an SNP supporter, but I am not surprised they have found it unsatisfactory

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 20:12

Yes me too Redactio

The famous "vow" keeps getting thrown up (despite at least one Yes poster saying that is not the case)

Yet no one moaning about "the vow" will answer why the Scottish government refuses to use its full powers.

Oh and of course the vow made absolutely no difference anyway to whether by that time any one voted No.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/03/2017 20:15

The SNP don't snipe about England. Or the English

I'd say that has about the same credibility as "the UK isn't a country", "it's Scotland's oil" and too many others to count

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 20:18

If you Google Gordon Brown and betrayal for news articles around Oct 2015, you will see that he warned that the UK government was going back on its word. He also thought it was likely that would bust apart the Union. Not SNP lies.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 20:24

It didn't go back on it's word though

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 20:27

Nikki has plenty of power that she does not use.

She plans on using power to hold a referendum that she doesn't have though.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 20:27

Oh yes and against the will of the scottish people

ocelot41 · 19/03/2017 20:37

I beg to differ gruffalo. What was in the Scotland Act did not match up to what was promised. I am English, not an SNP supporter, but a political journalist. G Brown was right. It was a broken promise, and a serious political misjudgement.

Headofthehive55 · 19/03/2017 20:39

I dislike the way Scotland is portrayed as being somehow captured by the English! It isn't. It's a partnership. We both get benefits by joining forces.
Although. I Know Scotland feels somehow that a smaller population means they are overlooked, England, nor Scotland are homogeneous masses. England comprises of very different regions: in demographics and political persuasion.

Plus apparently holding talks with a polish far right extremist and neo nazi sympathiser...

Why wouldn't we vote for such god like creatures Grin
