To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

Czechs and Slovaks?

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 19/03/2017 16:55

Sukey I came on to say that very thing, it's known as the Velvet Revolution.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 16:59

Czechoslovakia came into existence after the First World War, was broken up during the Second , reunited after 1945 and then broke up again in 1992. Hardly comparable.

I was waiting for someone to suggest this was comparable. It isn't.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 17:03

Yes it was fairly impressive. Can you see that it was a decision in the end taken by both governments.

It was not a decision of the people.

This is not the case with these divisive campaigns and repeated referenda. I fear that it will not be peaceful at all.

Our supposed engagement with politics is hailed by separatists.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 17:07

What was Czechoslovakia was previously part of Austria and Hungary under their empires and were territories which had a long history of upheaval and different rule. Very interesting and irrelevant to the UK union.

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 17:08

Well Gruff I am still voting yes. I don't believe I'm voting for deaths. I am sorry you are so frightened.

I believe voting Conservative is voting for further benefits sanctions and underfunding of Health and Social care and so on. Which has led to deaths.

I believe Scotland can, with independence, escape decades of Tory government and try to improve the future for anyone choosing to live here.

I know that there are people (not just SNP supporters) who feel as I do and will vote yes in Scotref if it does happen.

If we lose I will continue to live my life.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 17:10

It is more like yugoslavia

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 17:10

Who gets to decide what a country is and where the borders are?

We've been the UK for a long time. But we've also been many different countries and areas with different rulers for much much longer than we've been the UK.

Unions and countries do change. History isn't confined to the past.

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 17:15

Lol gruff is the extremist here. Just seen the vote for independence = a vote for death.

You cant argue with batshit. Thats it, my Yes vote is secured.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 17:16

Yes countries change. It usually ends in war.

History, should be learned from and not repeated.

It is still my view that a yes vote is a vote for war.

I will be voting no.

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 17:18

Gruff who will be killing who? In the event of a yes for independence?

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 17:18

Yeh...we get that

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 17:20

At least you may have the chance to vote - some of us are stuck in England with a Government that is hard set on a hard Brexit and doesn't give a toss about people who voted differently.

And are probably stuck with this Tory Government for years as there is no opposition.

sluj · 19/03/2017 17:20

I'm a Brexiter in England and quite excited about the future. However I am under no illusion that it will be a difficult path to tread and for that reason I think Scotland should either work with us or decide to leave and go it alone . Leaving us to concentrate on rUK instead of being dragged down by the negativity.
If that can only be determined by a referendum after the terms are agreed then so be it - so long as Scotland foots the bill for it.
I don't particularly want Scotland to go but I'm not going to beg them to stay either if they are just going to moan about it all the time and hold the rUK back.

For the first referendum I was actually more interested in the result. The prospect of a second one doesn't really bother me too much in the scheme of things.
I would be quite interested in a referendum that allowed the rUK to vote on the continued union though Grin

Tories were the majority party seats and %age up to 1955.

The present Union is 300 years- the borders of England and Scotland a lot longer. I don't think the kingdoms of Mercia, Wessex et al are particularly relevant.

It does show that nothing is constant and nothing can be taken for granted. Countries and regions change, unite and separate.

History shows us that.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 17:32

Scotland isn't moaning. Nicola and the yessers are doing it. Majority of scots support the union and many are very patriotic Brits and patriotic scots at the same time.

I am devastated. I can't begin to tell you the impact that this will have on me and my family.

It is a shitty attitude to try and cast us aside.

You might not give a shit that sturgeon is acting like a dictator, but I do.

She doesn't speak for me on brexit or the union. Only may is doing that at the moment.

I bet there are some people from Europe who are living in the UK who have the same thoughts.

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 17:36

the gruffalo

How do you think a French person living in the UK feels about Brexit and May ignoring the concerns of European citizens living here?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 17:37

I think it shows you have very little understanding of the situation in Scotland either in 2014 or now.

egosumquisum1 · 19/03/2017 17:38

Do you think that we will still have a Union in 100 years time? 200 years time? 500 years time?

Headofthehive55 · 19/03/2017 17:40

calyx if Scotland separate the English / Welsh can unilaterally decide that your uk. Passport is invalid and you need an English passport to enter. You would have no say in this. There is no need for negotiation - each country decides for itself.

In fact why would we have British passports. They would no longer fit the purpose.

Babymamamama · 19/03/2017 17:42

YANBU OP. Not at all. I would like the rest of the Union to have a say in this. I hate this assumption we have to put up with Scottish national party sniping about England. And we just have to take it. Let's all have a vote. And send Scotland on their merry way -if that is what is decided - to court Europe on their own two feet.

Whisky2014 · 19/03/2017 17:45

See its posters like that that just seal the deal as well.
