To wonder why England wants to keep Scotland?

Or am I being really thick? NS has been causing no end of grief the past few years always complaining about how bad Scotland has it (despite receiving more money for Scotland than Scotland gives back) also promising English votes for English laws and then changing that when something she didn't like can up. Her financial plan depends on the North Sea oil. If Scotland keeps rights to that it'll last fifty years tops before oil runs out. She just seems to be a constant pain and wants special treatment which wales and NI don't ever seem to get. I do love Scotland but right now I'm inclined to cheerily wave them off and wish the good luck.

I actually do think the UK is a country, but a pretty unique one as is is made up from a union of other countries

Bit like the USA then.

Would Nyx tell say a Californian their country isn't America?

SunnyDayDreaming101 · 19/03/2017 13:53

Funnily enough one of the biggest oil reserves was found off the north coast a few years ago, it's on hold for development for now due to prices. We have more oil
Than Norway and look at how they are doing compared to the UK. the revenues we contribute to the treasury from whiskey sales which are not counted as Scottish but British are astronomical and never factored into that, not to mention we would then have the North Sea fishing rights, Scottish salmon anyone? Find it all over the world! Not to mention Aberdeen Angus beef, tourism, gin, just to mention a few. As a tiny nation we contribute huge amounts to the treasury, the accounting process in Westminster do not split it all out to specifically recognise this.

I'm not saying I am pro independence, I love my entire country, however the full economics are not widely understood outside of Westminsters walls

WhatWouldKeanuDo · 19/03/2017 13:53

Whisky has stated "The English are racist" at one point..

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 13:55

The irony is astoundidng

TinfoilHattie · 19/03/2017 13:55

how do you define someone who is Scottish? Someone who was born there? Someone with two Scottish parents? With one Scottish parent? With one Scottish grandparent? Someone who has lived there for over x time?

I was born in Scotland, lived there until I was 22, moved to England for 12 years, moved back. DH was born in England, moved to Scotland for Uni, moved back to England for 12 years before we all moved back north. My parents were both born and raised in Scotland, his were both born and raised in England. We have two children born in England, one in Scotland. DH would have qualified to play rugby/football for Scotland as even though both he and his parents were born and raised in England, his granny was from Fife. Which of my kids would qualify for this "Scottish" passport? Just the one born in Scotland? Or the two born in England, because their mum is Scottish? Can DH have one because of his Fife granny? Better send Trump an application form too. Hmm

Quite happy with my UK passport.

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 13:57

Anyone who makes their home in Scotland is Scottish if they wish to be. No matter where they come from.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 14:01

My family is just as englishy scottish Welshy... Oh yeah!!! BRITISH!

It is unwise to underestimate the sentiment of many British people towards the yessers. It will not go away.

We were a well behaved bunch last time. This time I am not so sure.

TinfoilHattie · 19/03/2017 14:01

I lived in England for 12 years... did that make me English? I suppose the SNP will require DH to go through a naturalisation process, and attend a ceremony where he kisses the feet of Saint Sturgeon and drapes himself in a Saltire. Hmm

Agree with someone who said upthread that "Scotland" doesn't register with many people - UK and England are interchangeable for much of the world. Scottish passport holders are going to have a lot of fun trying to get into some far flung country with their tartan passport.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 14:03

No I'm sorry but even scottish people din't feel welcome any more if they are considered a bit english. You can say that all day but it won't make it true.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 14:04

And if they don't want to be Scottish? I don't. I have a right to live and work in Scotland- (not EU based)

  • what are you thinking will happen Gruff? Like George square after the vote in 2014? Worse? Am I the only one finding this talk threatening?
Nyx · 19/03/2017 14:09

Don't worry Lass. You won't be branded with a tartan tattoo.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 14:10

I am simply making you aware of what potentally could happen.

I thin a lot of yes voters have very much misunderstood the calm and rational approach by no voters last time and will not like what they see this time round. I think emotions will run very very high.

There are plenty of angry scottish and english and Welsh and northern irush union supporters, who see this as a very dirty move by sturgeon.

brickinitIam · 19/03/2017 14:10

The SNP have ruined this country. I can't stand Sturgeon and Salmond. Even if Brexit had not happened that lying bitch would have used some other excuse to drag us through this again.

this

I was thinking more of my legal nationality. You know tedious detail like applying for a passport, embassy assistance and the like.

Many thanks however for your considered and thoughtful response.

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 14:15

Same boat lass Sad

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 14:19

'If you wish to be' I said.

There's no talk of compulsory Scottish passports etc.

I'm only on this thread now out of incredulous amazement at some of the comments. I was praising the debates but now am a bit Shock

Thegruffalowswife · 19/03/2017 14:20

I lived in England for 12 years... did that make me English?

My family went there because they couldn't get work. When they came back they were all miraculously english (to the nats) even the ones that grew up here.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 14:26

'If you wish to be' I said.

There's no talk of compulsory Scottish passports etc.

You have absolutely no idea what the position will be for UK citizens living in Scotland who do not wish to adopt Scottish nationality will be.

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 14:26

Neither do you Lass.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 19/03/2017 14:31

Neither do you Lass

Er I am the one asking the question. You are the one trotting out answers.

It was a question I asked during the last referendum. I asked my msp - got the reply everyone will be entitled to a Scottish passport. Which of course is not the question I asked.

derxa · 19/03/2017 14:33

UK and England are interchangeable for much of the world. Scottish passport holders are going to have a lot of fun trying to get into some far flung country with their tartan passport.
I don't have a vote in the Indep Ref and if I did then I would vote no.
However some of the comments like this one make me Confused
Scotland is a country. I am proud to be Scottish. It's that simple.

Calyx72 · 19/03/2017 14:33

Do you think your British passport will be invalid in an independent Scotland Lass?

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 19/03/2017 14:39

Unionists and nationalists getting nasty does nothing to further either cause. IMO the ones getting nasty are the ones causing the hatred and divisions, not the campaigns themselves. Just stop it, as adults we should be able to disagree without resorting to insults, xenophobia, nastiness and general ill feeling.
And before anyone says "but xxxx started it" that argument doesn't work when my 3 yo says it. Have a word with yourselves eh?
